I've been exploring how to effectively tell stories using data, and after watching numerous videos, I finally found one that stands out in its practicality and depth. I think the first waterfall graph is very critical. This explains the big picture clearly and paves the way for the audience to follow us easily. And in order to come up with such waterfall graph with just the 4 charts at the begnning, it seems we need very good analytical skills to get such insight from those prelimiary data. May I know how we can equip with such great analtyical skill?

Hi Cole, fabulous workshop! Thank you for all of the valuable and useful ideas and concepts you have shared. I have two questions: The first question is about the big picture graph in the Stellar Story section of the workshop at 28:12. Would you mind explaining your thought process for including the white space under the blue and red bars? Do you think adding greyed out bars under the blue and red bars to show more complete information for people perhaps not used to seeing data this way could work? Or would that detract from the cogency of the graph? My second question is about the scholarships program you talked about at 22:33. Would you be able to expand a little bit about how that program is going to be rolled out? Thank you and congratulations on the new production studio!
@storytellingwithdata
@storytellingwithdata 10 ай бұрын
Hello, Cole here-thanks for your comment & questions! First, the graph you're referring to is called a waterfall chart. I agree they can be confusing to an audience who might not be used to seeing data that way, which is why I set up the structure, talking through the details, before even showing the data. Those "floating" bars are meant to add and then deduct from the beginning bar, together yielding the end bar. You can read more about this and many other graph types in our SWD chart guide: www.storytellingwithdata.com/chart-guide Regarding the scholarship program, we are working on that now, with plans to launch in early 2024. In the meantime, if you're interested in one of the programs that begins early in the year, please email us at support@storytellingwithdata.com and we'll ask you to provide a little information to determine whether and what level of support we can provide. Thank you!

The stellar story is very nice. I could improve in that area. I'm afraid though I have insufficient time to prepare the various variants of graphs. Any suggestions on how to standardize or optimize actions in that area in order to maximize time efficiency?
@storytellingwithdata
@storytellingwithdata 3 ай бұрын
You are right; formatting graphs takes time, but it is worth it when you help your audience better understand your message and make smarter decisions. That said, when you are limited in time, focus on the low-hanging fruit. For most data visualizations, that means making the "so what" obvious by adding words to outline the main takeaway and doing something to draw attention to supporting data (sparing color, an arrow, etc.). Another time-saving tip could be to create custom chart templates in your tool that limit the amount of formatting steps needed to remove visual clutter. Here's a video that demonstrates how to do this in Excel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ7EmnuXmdhpm5Ysi=eTzfnlT3UgVckG11

@@storytellingwithdata Thank you for the detailed answer! Very kind of you. Yeah custom chart templates is my current way of working, but that only works when you have stable data structures (which I do for the most part). I guess I'll have to bite the bullet for the less standardized stuff. Thank you very much for a nice video and the response.

Anyone has any tips for finding meaningful bin sizes when creating histograms/bucket sizes while doing exploratory data analysis? I often report on data that's rather skewed and find it hard to find the right balance between keeping the amount of bins to a minimum while not losing any of the important details.
@storytellingwithdata
@storytellingwithdata 10 ай бұрын
Hi Jonas, Cole here. There's definitely an art to it, and often it involves iterating-going too wide, then too narrow, to hone in on "just right" when it comes to determining an appropriate bin size for the given dataset. This isn't really an answer to your question, but more of an acknowledgement of the tension you're feeling as you grapple with striking a balance. It's part of the process!
@ahd.abualrob
@ahd.abualrob 10 ай бұрын
first, create the histogram chart, then form "format chart" you can easily adjust the bin size and try as many sizes as you want with one click, this will make it easier to compare, once you find the perfect look for the bin size (based on the histogram shape after your trials with different bin sizes), create the groups based on that bin size and create a bar graph (it will look better). I hope this will help

I am a developer and am in process of building a lite version of dashboard builder. What are the controls that i can give as configurable settings to end users so they can create stories as presented in the video?
@storytellingwithdata
@storytellingwithdata 3 ай бұрын
Great question! We view dashboards as tools to help analyze or explore data rather than the medium to present data. If the dashboard designer better understands how the data will eventually be communicated, then they can be more thoughtful in choosing chart types and reducing visual clutter. This saves the end user time when creating their one-off story.

This is really old school stuff. As others have said, zero storytelling. Apart from in the questions, no real mention of animation, adding animated narratives and explanations on the chart itself, background images etc. The trouble with Excel is that the charts look like they have been created in Excel. Dont agree with your answer on using PPT and Excel. Use the right tool for the job. There are so many other tools that do so much more and better.....surely that should be the objective.
