Something similar happened to me when I was a cashier at a convenience store at the mall back in my college days. This tookplace on a Saturday and I had gotten up at like 6 in the morning, took a bus to the mall, and started my shift at like 8 am, so I was kind of tired. One of the first customers I had reprimanded me for not smiling at him. He said "Why aren't you smiling, you should be happy to be here". I didn't say anything because I didn't want to cause a scene but I was thinking - dude, I'm tired, I really don't have energy to smile at you. He left but then this dude actually came back and stood at the entrance shouting that I had no personality and that I was driving away customers because I didn't smile enough. As if you can really give a fair assessment of who someone is by interacting with them for a less than a minute at checkout while they're half-asleep and they're working for peanuts at a crowded mall.

The first time I was fired was at my FIRST JOB. Get your tea Paris lol My brother's son's mother, Chelsea, who is also my best friend of 2 years, put in a recommendation for me at Blue Sushi Sake Grill in Fort Worth, Texas. They had a position open since she moved to Dallas and started working at their location there. I had been working there for about a month as a hostess and EVERYONE GAVE ME COMPLIMENTS on how fast I was learning and how hard i was working and for my great people skills. This flattered me because at the time I was 17 and I felt very awkward and cared a lot about what people thought of me. After that month, the general manager of the store came in to work nights for a week. The first night was very strange, it was a tuesday, not even a weekend, and they had THREE HOSTESSES WORKING THAT NIGHT, including me. I got to meet the GM, Perry, for the first time as he supervised us at the host stand. At this point I was used to the routine. BUT FOR SOME REASON THAT NIGHT PERRY HAD ME HOLDING THE DOOR AND CLEANING THE RESTROOMS. I wasnt allowed to answer the phone, take reservations, seat guests, or set tables, WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE MY JOB IN THE FIRST PLACE. I am very understanding so, I complied with everything he asked me and my friend, Tiffany, to do that night. He was very rude and demanding and demeaning as he treated us like we were incapable to do the job we were hired for. He didnt specifically say he didnt want us to do our jobs, he just kept giving us different things to do throughout the night, shooing us away from the host stand, pushing past us, talking over us, taking over tasks. Finally he asked us not to come near the host stand, to help the servers (who kept telling us they didnt need our help) and dont talk to guests or answer the phone. So we remained in the kitchen doing all we could to stay busy. At one point in the night he asked us to polish silverware. SO WE DID. Once we were done, we took our positions back at the host stand because NO ONE WAS STANDING THERE AND GUESTS WERE WAITING FOR ASSISTANCE. Perry then demanded for us to polish silverware like he had asked... -_- In my mind, I was like, nigga we just did wtf. like WE JUST GOT BACK. but i didnt say that. we waited for him to finish ranting and respectfully I said, "oh we just finished polishing." cuz he obviously didnt know. he then told me i could go home for rest of the night. I stood their with confusion in my eyes and my mouth open in disbelief. I rushed to the back and started crying. Thats when my original manager asked me to tell him what happened. I told him and he called Perry into the office. Perry proceeded to tell him that I was being disrespectful all night and had an attitude all night. I COULDNT BELIEVE HE WAS LYING. Every time he asked me to do ANYTHING I smiled and said yessir and rushed to do it. so where was this coming from? Perry told my main boss that I refused to follow orders and I'm like BUT WE DID WHAT YOU SAID. if you wanted us to do it again thats all you had to say. I cried some more because I felt like i was in trouble for no reason and that he thought I was a bad person. The rest of the week went by smoothly. The weekend came and I worked my regular job. Perry didnt get in the way at all. He actually left early. I was surprised. BUT at the end of my shift, my original manager called me into his office. He told me that they werent going to need me anymore. I was so confused and hurt. I needed that job, I was on my own with no money at 17. When i asked him why he was letting me go he just kept repeating that they just didnt need me and that i didnt fit the image...-_- bish what? He even told me that in the state of Texas they dont have to tell the employee the reason for firing them. So, that happened...lol I love your story times Paris, but I love you more! You always make me smile!!!

Some states have a higher minimum wage than others, but the country's minimum wage is $7.25 and a lot of wait staff make $2.50 and they're expected to earn the difference in tips, however a lot of restaurants also combine the tips and equally divide between every waiter and waitress as well as busboys and hostesses (not sure if kitchen staff gets included)

I don't know what part of Maryland but they lied! In October it was $10.75 and this October it will be $11.50.. I worked two minimum wage jobs in the last year. In the beginning of 2016 it was $9.55 so if you was working for that cheap you better sue

I live in Tennessee and work in a fast food place and minimum wage that they start you out at is $7.25. We are also not allowed to accept tips.

Keep in mind, we get a $0.15 cent raise twice a year. I've been there 6 years, and make $9.60 an hour after being promoted to the next rank and started at $7.50 an hour due to previous experience. It's kind of sad really.
