We've all had a patient escape at some point in our careers, let's be honest. And, well, sometimes the stories can be pretty darn funny! As I no longer work for a healthcare institution/hospital/practice, I don't have a conflict of interests or fear of being fired for telling your very HIPAA Compliant stories, and because I have the platform to do so, I've decided to tell your stories! We start with Great Patient Escapes! All stories are edited or sent in in full HIPAA Compliance, and these videos are not meant to shame or belittle or make fun of patients in any way. We're about respectful humor around here.
Do you have a great escape story? Put it in the comments below!
Do you have hospital or healthcare ghost stories you want me to react to in the next episode? Send them to me on Instagram or email me at nurselizyt@gmail.com!

As Covid Vaccine mandates become more popular, I have a few thoughts as to what is ethically the right move here. Covid vaccination decreases spread of illness, and will decrease likelihood of transmission to patients. However the vaccine mandate may cause more nurses to leave already short staffed units, making working conditions more unsafe. And costing more lives in the end.

OMG This happened to me. It was night shift and we were discharging an elderly, confused woman. I turned around and she was gone. I asked the security guard and he said, "Oh yeah, she just walked out." WHAT?! I told him to grab a wheelchair and follow me. I ran outside and spotted her a half block away, up a hill, at the bus stop. I caught up with her and told her to come back to the hospital because her husband was on her way to pick her up. She adamantly refused to go back. We had to force her into the wheelchair but she kept trying to get out. I ended up having to tilt the wheelchair far enough back that she couldn't get out. I had to carefully wheel her down one of San Francisco's famous hills, tilted back, still ranting and flailing about, back to the ER. If I had let go, she would have rolled downhill for several blocks. I was so glad it was nighttime and no one was around because I'm sure it looked like I was kidnapping a woman off the street. In this same ER one night a six-foot naked man just appeared standing in the treatment area. He was dazed, wearing nothing but a hospital ID bracelet. Of course he belonged upstairs. We got him back to his room without incident.

Haha! We had the police call us once because they said they had our patient. She had walked down to the lobby, called a cab, and then went to the police to tell them we were holding her against her will.

Holiday season, telemetry unit, nightshift. We'd just finished report when one of the patients went into tachycardia. My charge nurse comes running down the hall, sees me, a tells me he needs help. We go running down to the pt room only to find it empty. We're looking everywhere while speaking to our monitor tech about the rhythm. Still tachy in the 160's. Our unit was on the 3rd floor and shaped like a triangle, with the main nurses station at one point and stairwells and large windows with bench seats at the 2 other points. I open the stairwell door and look down, nothing. Meanwhile, my charge is looking out the large window, defeated, where I join him. Just then we see our pt running by on the sidewalk below, naked ass hanging out of his gown, bare foot, wearing a Santa hat. So, we both go running down the stairs and outside. I'll take a minute to mention my charge was a large guy, not in great shape but wearing tennis shoes. I on the other hand was in pretty good shape but wearing Danske clogs. It's at this point I'm told to go ahead, he'll call for backup, management has its privileges. I proceed to chase this guy, he had to be late 70's - early 80's. Every time I almost had him, which was alot, he'd find a new gear. I remember this reminding me of a Bassett hound we had when I was little, always getting out and taking my dad on a tour of our neighborhood. Anyway this went on for like 5 or 6 blocks before the local police caught up with us and the pt proceeded to run to them, thanking them for showing up because someone was chasing him. I was so flabbergasted. I'd been talking to him all along, when I could catch my breath, trying to orient him and why the hell was I the one out here chasing him - he wasn't my pt! And where'd he get the Santa hat? The world will never know.

Love these "scary nurse stories" As a retired R.N. who began my career in 1971, I have several of my own. My question is: did you get dressed down, written up or punished for "letting" these bizarre events happen on your watch? I did and many of my coworkers did too😡

Had a confused gentleman as patient on Christmas Eve when I worked the cardiac step-down unit as a new RN. We Posey vest restrained him so he wouldn't fall out of bed. Christmas morning rolls around, and as I'm waiting for the next shift to come in for report, I see my little man running down the hallway, buck-naked, screaming his bed is on fire. He proceeded to run into my other 87 year old female patient's room and have massive diarrhea right in her doorway. I ran over to him, holding him up as he's starting to wobble, and he continues pooping down my leg and onto my shoes. We eventually got him back into bed and cleaned up, and I went home in hospital scrubs. I still have no idea how he managed to escape 2 bed alarms and a Posey Vest. My poor female patient coded and died later that day. I've always thought the shock of the situation is what did her in. 😟

Oh boy, I have a lot of stories after only 3 yrs (transporter, then student nurse). As soon as the hospital found out I was in nursing school, they decided to pull me from transport to be a sitter. Cool I thought, until they said I was going to the ICU with a confused elderly person with a chest tube. Cue terror. Ended up being the most chill day ever bc the pt was pretty sedated, and we just watched SciFi movies all day (they perked up watching a few!) and convincing them to drink ensure by making 'milkshakes' (ensure on ice). Pt was also really pleasent when awake. Transporting, just dropped off a pt and was cleaning my stretcher when I heard chaos and a code autumn, prepped my stretcher for CT. Calmly wheeled my stretcher over to find almost a dozen people clustered around a room, most of them residents/students, and on the far side of the room an absolutly terrified naked man crouched in the corner. Since no one was doing anything helpfuI I grabbed a gown and loudly asked everyone to move, went in and pleseantly asked if he was okay, and asked if we could put on a gown and take a ride down for a ct to make sure he was ok. (Other pt in room was also terrified, albeit more than likely bc a naked old man was at the foot of his bed) Pt was completly compliant and followed exactly what I asked, right out to my stretcher, with all the other staff looking dumbstruck. Pt ended up being fine, the chaos was bc he had been in a posey bed that the EKG tech forgot to zip up, and apparently no one knew if he was dangerous. Unfortunatly this got me associated with being able to deal with... unstable and confused pts, which led to a lot of rough sitter cases later. I get the food runaway thing, I had pts that would end up calling me by food associations when I remembered things like 'Cranberry Juice Guy'. Never fails to crack me up! Had a sitter case that I got pulled aside by the charge and told if they moved at ALL, get out of the way and call the nurses station. Pt was chill until about 2am, and when they jumped up I reflexively went to help ad they swung, I put my hands up and stepped back and they went into the bathroom. Shower turns on as I call the nurses, who immeadiatly call security. Was almost an hour of fighting to get them out of the shower, and the pt tore the sower head out of the wall to use as a weapon. Pt spent the rest of the night sedated and sleeping peacefully. Often with sitter cases I got minimal report from day shift PCT/SN/CNA if they were even slightly in a hurry, but I literally walked into the room and the day shift aide bolted without even saying Bye. Little old lady in a low-boy bed, sweet smile but I could see the distress behind it. She was soaked so I cleaned her up and got her warm blankets (charge knew I would pester if I was stuck in a room but only if I really needed something for the pt so helped quickly). Ended up chatting and finding out she had a number of people betray her trust and that led to severe anxiety, she ended up falling asleep holding my hand. I had told her I would be going to lunch at some point, so she was awake but not distressed when I came back. Unfortunatly since she was so miraculously calm now, they took me away as a sitter to work the floor, which led to complete regression and panic. I felt awful but talked her back into bed and rounded all night. They ended up calling me from another unit the next night to calm her again, it broke my heart I couldn't stay. I really hope they were able to get her a therapist bc she clearly needed help to get through her mental trauma. One more to end on a funny. Transport, picking up a pt with broken leg to CT, surgery scheduled for next day, daughter in room. Enter room with stretcher and chat a few secounds, hear crash and turn to see one of the hevy bottom plastic cups sail across the hall and shatter in front of the door, followed by a naked man. Promptly close door and shoulder it while reassuring pt and daughter. Couple minutes go by, peek out and see half a dozen security AND half the nurses on the unit attempting to restrain naked pt, and see shredded posey bed that had been removed from that room. Apparently having issues finding new bed, and got called by both my boss(who was cool) and CT (who was pissed off bc the dr kept calling them asking why the scan was delayed) but understood my situation. This goes on for over an HOUR, still trapped in room when the surgeon wiggles in and realizes the reason for the delay, and talks to the pt for a few minutes until the chaos is done. Pt and daughter gush at me for staying and making sure other pt couldn't come in, and as dr is leaving he extends his hand to shake mine. Now at this point, no dr had ever so much as acknowledged me and I was off guard. So I have one hand on my stretcher, and the other on the door I just opened for him. A normal person lets go of one or the other and politely shakes hands. I however was stressed and my brain decided I was not allowed to let go of either. So I proceeded to smack the surgeon in the face with the door, my career flashing before my eyes, and the pt with no hesitation goes "Hey! I need him!" Cue both the daughter and surgeon cracking up while I apologized profusely. For months everytime that surgeon saw me he would grab his forehead. :')

Phlebotomist here. I used to work at a 600 bed hospital in a semi small city. My shift being weekend 7p-7a. at 9:30 pm I took a break to catch a restaurant directly across the street, before it closes, not one place stay opened at 2a.m. our official lunch hour. There was a bus stop next to this restaurant. I was walking by a line of 5 people waiting to get on a bus that had just pulled up. The person in the back, a gentleman, wearing a hospital gown opened in the back no underwear. Head covered in gauze, standing waiting his turn. No one, not one single person looked alarmed. A cold January night. So I called hospital security on my cellphone, trying to be discreet as he started stepping on the bus, I'm also trying to get the bus driver's attention. The patient had no money, I'm begging the driver not to move, the driver told me he can allow a passenger a free ride at his discretion. I'm frustrated, "Sir! This is a patient with an obvious head injury!", I yelled, to no avail. The patient, now quite irritated, gets money from someone and the doors closed 😳... Bus drives off. Hospital security was able to follow the bus. Not sure how it went down when they were finally able to get on the bus. That night, a Sunday night was hectic. I learned the following weekend they were able to get the police involved. We had begged for a while to have most doors locked after certain hours, and have security at entrances that ensured the safety of the patients and staff. A few near misses had to happen first. And you are right, 3rd shift had all kinds of wild things happening. It was against the law for anyone to ever say "it's kinda quiet tonight "...

LPN SNF night shift. Pt being treated with IV Abx for endocarditis d/t heroin use. Went missing (for a 1/2 hour) at her midnight dose. Found said patient in a car in the SNF parking lot with her dealer's face in her privates. Dealer had just shot her up with heroin. I yelled at both of them for her to get back in the SNF after assessing her & called the cops on the dealer. Was not a pretty sight. True story.

I escaped from the Mental Health unit. I did because I did not appreciate the hospital either. The opportunity presented itself when I was seated about 10 feet from a open, unlocked door. The Bad news was even though I still was dressed in the same clothing I was admitted with. No shoes though. I walked home about 2 miles. Middle of Jan. in UPSTATE NY is cold. I walked home about 2 miles, in my stocking feet.

Several escape stories here....worst one was a repeat escaper. Huge person (400# or more, 6' plus). I weighed 150#....boss was saying "why couldn't you get between them and the door???" Uh no.....chased them down the street several times at night, zero or less outside. They had NO SHOES and a gown. Unfortunately it didn't end well the last time. We were told to let them go, not have police get them again. They died so next day police calls to say they found them, but not ok this time. 🥺

I was working in a SNF (skilled nursing facility-think a mix of short term rehab and long term care). We had a very confused pt who was only oriented to self to the point that if it is something that could be sat on then clearly it must be a toilet. First shift had sent this patient out for an appointment but apparently no one had made sure this person was accompanied by a family member according to protocol. Neither had anyone even apparently notified any family of said appointment. The patient gets transported by an EMS transport company for a morning appointment. When she finished the appointment, she walked out of the medical office without the staff calling the transport company to come pick her up. As I was getting in early for my 3-11p shift (a bit past 2pm), I asked the Nurse where Pt X was; ie why wasn’t she back from her morning appointment. We called the office; not there. We called the EMS transport company not with them. Needless to say the administrator was popping himself because this is kinda a big deal. The local hospitals didn’t have her either. The medical office was hospital adjacent and that campus had a bus that would make circuits around the hospital campus. A staff member decided to hop on to look for her that way. She had been riding the bus around the campus for hours because she never got to her stop.

I studied paramedics years ago (didn’t end up finishing that degree) and I was on placement when we were call-out to a pt who had tried to suicide. We were there for a long time convincing this pt to come with us voluntarily because at the time ambos couldn’t care and control, they had to get the police to do it. Anyway we hand them over and go to bed, we get woken up in the middle of the night for a call and go to this house and I’m like “this house is really familiar” and I realise it’s the same house we had been at before. Turned out the hospital has put a security guard on the pt but not care and controlled this pt so the security guard went to the toilet and the pt walked out the front door and called his ex wife to pick him up so the hospital called him as a missing person, police checked the house and then called us. Was so funny getting my own previous handover back to me from the police officer, the police ended up coming with us because they wanted to have a “chat” with the security guard :p Talking about how deceptive people are, a friend of mine had a psychotic break. She was a tiny 18 year old, she fought off 2 paramedics, 2 police officers and another bystander before eventually being netted to the bed. She then managed to get half out of the net so the older cop (the younger one paled at this) had to sit on her to hold her down. The ambos gave her heaps of sedatives (not sure which because she was a friend not a pt) and was taken to resuc, the doc started removing the net and the ambos and cop screamed NO. The doc was confused and decided to give a half dose of another sedative because she was so small and surly that will be enough. It took a double dose before she stopped fighting She was then soft shackled to the bed and she managed to get out of the shackles by reaching under the bed and untying it from underneath. She had her hands and one leg free with the security stuttering in the corner when a nurse happened to see the look on his face and she yelled “hold her down”. My friend was so grouchy that she had almost gotten free when she was caught again

When I was a young nurse, I worked on a 52 bed pediatric/adolescent unit. I was working 11-7. The phone ran and I answered with the required response. The person on the other end said. "Hi Miss Richardson. This is Lois. I'm going up to the roof and jump off, then hung up. I called Security STAT. They found Lois on the roof, but, since Lois was nobody's fool, she was on the roof of the ER which was 1 story. The hospital was main hospital was 7 storey. Lois was transferred to a mental health hospital. A few months later Lois showed up at the nurse's station. I said, "Hi, Lois. How are you?" Lois responded, "Miss Richardson, I can't believe you remember my name.." All I could do was give her a hug and say, " Lois, how could I forget you?!"

I had an older gentleman as a patient when I worked on a post-surgical unit. My unit was down the hall from pre/post op. My patient was convinced he left something in pre-op, so we told him that he could go down the hall and ask them about it (I was too busy to go with him). Well apparently after he went to pre-op he forgot what he was doing and decided to go home to take care of his dog 😅 We called his home phone and he actually answered. He was all, “Oops! Let me just finish taking care of my dog and I’ll come back.” He said he would be a few hours. We had to explain to him that he needed to get back as soon as possible. About an hour later, a man came to the nurse’s station looking for his nurse, so we thought it was our patient. Actually, it WAS one of our patients, but it was the one who left AMA earlier that day, not the one who was taking care of his dog 😂 Our dog lover came back to the unit eventually and all was made right, but it taught me to never trust my patient to do what they say they’re doing out of the room! 😂

So most of the people on my floor are confused (neurology FTW) and older so they are just high fall risk in general. The rule on our floor is unless they are fully independent and we trust them, their on alarms. But obviously we're humans so sometimes we'll forgot to put alarms on patients, especially ones who set them off often and we have keep running in and correcting them. So during a time when no one was at the nurses station and I was helping with a critical patient, I walked to the nurses station to see our highly confused patient, naked, sitting in our report room confused as ever. Mind you this patient could barely make it to their bathroom without a walker and being week, but made it halfway down the unit without any issues. Then when I got nurses and other aids to help me try to get them back to their room. They got mad because they didn't know why they had to leave the report room and they were cold. Confused patients always make for the best stories.

Liz they found one of our pts in Walmart( about 2 miles away before the super Walmart near the hospital was built) during the day, he decided to go shopping. I was crossing our bridge which separates our twin cities and low and behold I see a pt on the bridge walkway hauling his IV poke and all of the dripping IV bags. I dont know what to say but I saw it. He was walking in the direction of the hospital so he was going back I guess@##$%%^^^%$$#@@@#$@

one time working in LTC we had a young patient, sketchy history and was there basically to prevent from going to jail. We didn't have cameras or security guards. He got up at midnight went inside the break room and stole my coworkers car keys. stole her car. The car was tracked down in the nearest city ( OnStar) at a drug house. 🙄
