Rules of owning a saloon in Nigeria 1. Dont ever ever let your staff live with you 2. Pay as you earn should be your mode of operation. When they braid or fix hair they receive a percentage from the customer's payment, dont pay monthly. This therefore means 'no work no pay'. 3. Set your rules and boundaries from day one. No unnecessary laughing and chit chating around with them, trust me they will take advantage.

I know someone who moved to Nigeria from England recently and they have similar issues. Can you just imagine a driver drinking beer on duty😕😂. It’s a cultural issue bc in London you’d be considered a cool boss. But a lot of Nigerian workers have internalised being at the bottom of the hierarchy, so if you’re friendly to them they’ll even start to think you’re a fool. Even little things like saying please and thank you to them too often isn’t the norm so can be mistaken for being a mug. If anything let them earn privileges over time

@@pariscooper7220 😂 It’s also because saying please in UK is polite but in some Nigerian languages, please implies they have free will. If you’re saying it too much to a worker who isn’t culturally exposed, it’s weird to them and they think “hmm look at this mumu begging me to do a job they pay me for”. You can praise them for doing a good job instead
@beingosella__
@beingosella__ 11 ай бұрын
I don't think it's about 'pls and thank you' I mean that's been polite. Just make sure you aren't too friendly to afford over familiarity. It's the over familiarity that breeds disrespect not being polite.

First of all, I'll say be very intentional about the hiring process, interview a lot of them before picking one person...you can also make sure there's a written contract sent to the staff clearly stating the rules & codes of conduct. Lastly, since they will be living with you, you have to set a lot of boundaries because most times nigerians tend to overstay their welcome especially when they think you're "nice/cool"

RELATABLE. I was born and raised in London and moved to Ghana a year 1/2 ago and have a shop (unisex salon) honestly it's so beautiful to see more diaspora kids are choosing the motherland . I have also had serious challenges finding good staff and have had to hire and fire severally. The work ethic of the majority on this side of the world is sadly so poor. No discipline. But all in all the advantages have far outweighed the disadvantages of being a business owner back home as i feel like things have progressed far more than they would have in London . Thank you for discussing this its not easy out here when it comes to business people need to be warned and resilient. Not all roses . Happy your speaking ❤ 🙏🏽

I think people don't understand why others don't do business in Nigeria, the unprofessionalism is crazy. My GF wanted to start a business that required hiring 5 staff, I kicked against it because managing Nigerians is HELL in a cell. She went ahead & now had similar experiences like you. Late coming, stealing money, nonchalant attitudes. Everyone wants to be on Tiktok filming while working. It's a freaking mess yooo!

I feel like moving forward, remember you are a boss! You act like a boss that is you give strict rules Demz and they MUST sign that if this rule(s) is broken, this and that would happen. Then if they want to leave for any reason (maybe they have a party or wedding or they are sick) Miss, you let it be oral or through whatsapp. It's a business, even if it's small one day it would be big (Amen) Let it be done in a form of letter, they must tell you when they would leave and when they would be back and then you must sign too as agreement and you also have power to turn it down ma. Now, that letter, you may wish to write back and let them know that you are permitting them to leave (if you want) and failure to come back at a given time (lets say you must be back at 8, if at 8:01 you are just coming back, there would be a way you would even do, this would make them know you no dey joke o). Then the issue of making them sleep in your house if I got that right, I think if your workers are doing this to you that means they are taking your kindness for granted maybe they should be coming from their own house to work, it will dawn on them that they are actually working. I also think a uniform is needed (I know you said you know its a little business- again, God would provide) This makes them know ''omo, I dey work oo.'' Interviews Demz, professional interviews should be done for anyone you want henceforth. After work before anyone goes home, there should be proper documentation done by your staffs on costumers, how much income was made, was there a debit/credit, what about our wigs? how much went out? how many did they do? You know, all this are very important. You should also have erm places you document lateness and the times the workers broke rules. You attach it to their salary. You dont even say anything just keep documenting and you may (pending on what happens) write a office letter to them and they must sign their shortcomings. Hope that helps! Much love :))

Use a HR personnel/a sensible third person while stating on paper the exact rules and activities they are to carry out. Also, stating the consequences shoukd there be a default(s). Direct hiring , in most cases is clouded by emotions and you'll think the 'hired' should be intelligent and do their due works but some people are schmucks
