Stove Pipe and Damper Installation

Thank you so much for making this video!! I had a pretty good idea this is how I was supposed to do it but I was not certain the dampener I bought seems to be identical to the one you were using, so it came apart really easy. I've been working on installing a Franklin style wood burning stove, because I'm a tree cutter so hey free heat. But I knew I needed a dampener in the stove pipe and without this video I would not have known what to do..

Same. My damper is identical to this one as well. I too figured this is what I had to do to install it but was not fully sure but now I am. The big question this video answered for me is where on the pipe does the damper go. As well the tip of making dents with the damper rod is great advice to get the rod inline straight.

A guy on one of the Alaska survival shows on the Discovery channel. Used a .22 caliber rifle to put the holes in his stove pipe for the damper.

Drill a slightly smaller hole than needed so there is a tight fit on the damper shaft and it will stay in position. Note that the handle indicates Damper position. Crimped end goes DOWN into smoke pipe. Keeps falling sparks, and creosote from draining down the outside.

my damper is a half inch less pipe size. as most are. 6 inch. pipe. 5.5.

Steve, is there a way to temporarily bypass the auto damper? My unit will not fire. It has he same damper control as you use in the video. I ordered a new damper but won't get it for a week.

The damper is fine. Open a window slightly. Fire needs Combustion air.

Sounds like your getting a backdraft... do you have a chimney cap or no top on top of chimney? Is your flu getting hot when you fire furnace? Flu pipe needs to be warm.. hot air will take least resistance way to escape.. (hot air rises) if you have a chimney cap maybe remove it to see if helps draw more draft

Use a pilot drill first. That was the wrong size damper for that flue.

How to install a pop filter. Put the pippy pop filter ($6.95 on Amazon) between the pappity poppity poop poop talk flaps and the voice mic to prevent 'p's and talkity titty paffity t's from pouncing on poor people's speakers.
