I really enjoyed this wee documentary. You could sense the sadness in his voice as he remembered his school days in this old building. I too wish the building could be made useful once again. We lose so much of our history when things are allowed to crumble and fall.really sad.

I attended a school like the one in the film. Worst days of my life. Teacher was an animal, psychotic and unfortunately backed by the parish priest. 60 years later I still experience nightmares. Ireland and its schools were cruel and unforgiving when I was a child. Thank God those days have gone for ever. Martin Coyne

They had too much power, and were answerable to nobody, they were pillars of the community along with the guards..

No wonder everyone was running out of Ireland if they got the chance, it was a harsh, cruel place which took a long time to change.

thank you for telling this story so well. I helped restore an old one room school here in the states. It was a great project.

Hi Edward. Sorry for the delayed reply. I haven't been on this channel in a long time. We have since cleaned up the area and fixed it up a little bit. Where in the states was the school? I would love to see pictures or a video or the school.

Nice narration ...I had the misfortune to attend two such schools in my childhood.....one in particular brings back memories of a sadistic headmaster who in spite of his small stature took great delight in beating the children with a cane or whatever he could lay his hands on for the slightest mis spelt word or smudge on a jotter and woe betide anyone who was naturally left handed this was totally forbidden and please bear in mind we were all under 10 years old....the other two teachers in the school both female were just slightly more tolerant of the children in their care.....It wasnt until I attended secondary school that I discovered that not all teachers possessed this evil streak and I envy the children of today who actually look forward to attending school. I have heard it said that our treatment at school by these people did us no harm.....I can assure it did .......I never had the pleasure of meeting the headmaster in my adult life to explain to him the errors of his ways but any of my old school friends from that era still recall the horror stories from that school

Do you have any pictures of the school when it was active? Would be cool to compare it to what it used to be/teachers there/pupils. My grandmother wouldn't have been far off here. Clonaslee is where she went to primary school and she would have started in 1947.
