Depending on the object you are mapping, sometimes you can just create the UV shell, select an edge loop, and hit straighten shell. This is nice if you have a situation where you want only a part of the shell to be straight, but the rest to be unfolded normally, or if the object is simple enough where this wouldn't cause issues. Also there's a setting in the options for the multi-cut tool to have it automatically apply edge flow as its cutting, which can be useful you are placing a lot of cuts you want rounded out. Great video!

Honestly most of the stuff I've learned about Maya and 3D in general was learned outside of school. There's a lot that is either missed, ignored, or just not known by the teachers in school for this stuff, so I spend a lot of time on discord servers/online forums/reading product documentation to learn things my teachers/colleagues never knew. When you do this, rather than relying solely on what you learned in school, you're better equipped to develop your own methods and shortcuts for doing things, and troubleshooting becomes a breeze.
