I know this is a year old but some kids go to special schools for disabilities kids. My friend had to and her school was 45 minutes away. That would take hours for a parent to walk that far.

What did they expect the bus driver to do?? Take all 8 of them with her in the blizzard?? How about thanking her for keeping your children safe, even if that meant making the decision to leave them in the care of another in an emergency. Should she have just left them alone on the bus?? I guess I just dont know what they are so upset about 🤷‍♀️

Why didn't the driver stay with the students in the stranger's home till other arrangements were made?? That is the lack of job professionalism that really shows why the driver should be fired ASAP!!

​@@kaythegardener I understand your frustration. I think that firing her would be a mistake, though. You're not going to get another driver that easily. It's better to be more upset with management. Those are the people who made the decision to keep people in their seats instead of sending them home earlier. Regardless of whether the driver is willing to be there, those kids shouldn't ever be in a bus for eight hours.

@@RoadWarrior48 she made sure they were safe in the care of another. People forget these these drivers also have lifes outside of work and other responsibilities. Why didnt the parents come get their kids immediately if there was great concern?? 11pm is no where near immediate.

If a bus driver had to leave kids at my house, I would absolutely take them in, rally a couple neighbors to come help me tend to them, feed them, and make sure every single one was warm dry, fed, safe, and comfortable. I think most people feel the same way. Parents freak out way too easily these days. Stuff happens. Just be grateful someone was willing to take your kid in for a few hours 🤷‍♂️

Exactly. Parents do way too much freaking out these days. Hang out warm and dry at a stranger’s house, or hang out on the side of a freeway where they can get run over by a semi…. Hmmm, which to choose… 🤔

They’re complaining because the bus driver SHOULD HAD STAYED with the kids at the house and waited. Not leave them with a stranger even if she worked for county.

They need to fire ODOT director and hire someone with emergency management expertise. My granddaughter sat on I 5 for 7 hours from a job that normally takes 20 minutes. Then the nerve of News to say people stranded were Iill prepared.

I was driving a TriMet bus, and we were stuck on that freeway for 9 hours. It was unreal. People taking potty breaks on the side of the freeway, and passengers asking to be let off so they could walk the rest of the way. Completely avoidable. Had ODOT done their job (which they never do) the freeways would have been clear.

It had nothing to do with odot director. The school bus transportation supervisor for each individual school district is the one who makes decisions about snow days. And the driver who left the kids at a strangers house should be fired. Driver should have stayed there until kids had been taken elsewhere. I say this as a retired school bus driver.

You have a good idea, but you can't guarantee what/when/if the snow will show up or how bad it will be. It can pour on one side of the street and be dry on the other.

it started snowing around 8:00am. It started to get bad around 11:00am. Parents always have the choice to keep their kids home if their unsure of the weather or pick them up early.

i remember i was in grade 8 , they didn't cancel school and the bus drivers union refused to send the busses, didn't get home till like 7pm but it was kinda fun

The bus driver did the right thing (no question in my mind). I would MUCH rather have my child with a stranger/school worker/other kids and OUT OF SNOW / cold / potential ditch, etc.

@@baileygregg6567 No not a new student at all (mom and grandma for 36 years - hardly new). I, personally, would be most grateful the bus driver found a safe place (school worker) to house the kids. Hard times call for hard decision-making. That's the way I see it.

HOWEVER, the PPS SYSTEM needs to account for tragedies/ emergencies. It's like a fire, or active-shooter scenario; you SPEND MONEY and EFFORT on solutions to inevitable emergencies (and snowstorms in Portland ARE an INEVITABLE future emergency). The climate had changed here. They HAVE to prepare for 120 degree Summer days, and Fall/ Winter/ Spring blizzards. It is GOING to happen. NOT if-- when.

​@@michellewalters7097, try having buses with the engines on the inside. Antifreeze leaked inside the bus on the way to my school from a technology school. The scent was awful and we had to walk in it to get off the bus. NEVER AGAIN!. Thank God my district has buses with hoods now. The leaky antifreeze happened in the late 2000's.

The driver found safety for the kids. Why did the driver leave? Could be the driver had responsibility to their family. Don't know if the driver tried to communicate with main office. That would be the only issue. Sounds to me they ( driver) did the best they could.
