I just happened to remember that 70 years ago I was a 5-yr-old boy in Florida, and Avocados were called Alligator Pears, or just "pears" by Floridians. Nearly everybody in Tampa had a "pear" tree in their yard back then, and we couldn't imagine buying one from a market! Does anybody else out there remember hearing of Avocados being called Alligator Pears?

My in laws lived in the Keys and Oakala. They told me, back in the Keys, they had an avocado tree. They also said they had no idea how to use them. Luckily, they've wised up. I just found it funny. I'll have to ask them if they ever heard them called Alligator Pears.

There is an avacado tree that is growing through the steps behind Paqual's palace at the Palenque Myan ruins (at least it was there in the early '90's. Absolutely the best I've ever tasted, never tasted any other remotely close. Pear shaped with a large seed if memory serves. Nutty, creamy, remote "normal" avacado flavor. if you ever get the chance...

Years ago, I was riding my bike home from Valley College, when I whizzed by this snack cart in front of a new restaurant. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw these gigantic bright green spheroids. It was like a scene from a cartoon, the way I slammed on the only partially-functioning brakes, and backed up. The restaurant: Ay Papa Que Rico (www.google.com/maps/place/Ay+Papa+Que+Rico/@34.2046585,-118.4507976,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2972309ba278d:0xfda826988a3cc06d!8m2!3d34.2046585!4d-118.4486089?hl=en&authuser=0 ), the green spheroids: a variety of avocado I'd never encountered before, nor anywhere else. At $4 each, they were worth every penny & more, for these were the sweetest, creamiest avocados I'd ever had. I'd read about avocados being used in desserts, and until then, I couldn't fathom why. This variety, of whose name I'm still unaware, was what elucidated me to why. Over the years, I've bought many avocados from Ay Papa Que Rico, not all of them have been this wonderous variety of which I've spoken, but they've unfortunately stopped selling avocados altogether years ago. :(

during the late spring last year i buried 5 avocados seeds in a mound of mulch and forgot about them. toward the end of summer i seen they had sprouted and had small leafs, dug them up and put them in a really large flower pot, they have lived in the garage under grow lights next to a large window unheated and are about 7-9 inches tall and look really healthy. also i going to order a Mexicola seedling from one green world as it can take zone 8 but will keep it in a pot to bring in just in case we get a bad cold spell.

The best avocado I ever had was from a friend of a friend's tree. I still don't know what variety it was, but it was incredibly creamy and never turned brown when left out after cutting. I planted some of the seeds and maybe they will fruit some day. I need to ask about it again so I can find the variety.
@kimhicks47812 жыл бұрын
Surprise a B Avaçado pollinated doesn't turn brown after cutting. The skin also stays green. It is said to taste good, often used for a pollinator for Hass to produce more fruit as Hass really doesn't need a pollinator. IT would only be used for more production of fruit. For all around tree traits Hass s still King, If you are only going to have one tree may people recommend a Hass. For a semi smaller tree many recommend Gem, Reed, Lila, Pinkerton and I think Lula is a small tree along with Holiday that ripens at Christmas when other Avacados are not n seasoñ. These mentioned are all good tasting Avacados and of course there are other worthy trees. The Mexicola and Mexicola Grande are very cold hardy down to 18 degrees. The Grande has bigger fruit it not as tasty s regular smaller fruited Mexicola.

Years ago I was ripening some Hass avocados to make a cold avocado soup. The day before I went to make the soup I had to make an emergency trip out of town for about a week. When I got back the avocados were over ripe, but still looked to be ok to use. As I made the soup I made a discovery, those really overripe, borderline Hass avocados for some reason taste like pipe tobacco. I've been a pipe smoker for 30 years so I know those flavors really well and those avocados tasted like a tobacco blend heavy with bright Virginia tobacco. My girlfriend at the time was absolutely horrified by the flavor.

I have seen only 2-3 varieties in Finland and I don't know which one is which because they are all small to compared to those. Its a bit too expensive for my liking to daily use. You can vacuum seal the rest of the guacamole and will last atleast 3 days without going brown.

Jared, I have a new "weird" fruit for you to try! I think you didn't try it yet! It's the prunus mume var. bungo makino. This fruit is believed to be a natural hybrid of the apricot (prunus armeniaca or prunus sibirica) and the japanese apricot (prunus mume) Japanese apricot is basically not palatable in its raw state (needs to be pickled, sweetened...), but the "bungo makino" have the sweetness of the apricot, so it can be eaten raw. Maybe I'm wrong but I believe it could be a challenge to find this fruit in the US, it seems that it doesn't even have a vernacular name in english...

A test of their 'refrigerator life' would be useful because a person living alone would not normally eat a whole avocado at once, specially the big ones. I do get lots of wild avocados (Persea spp.) from a rural area in the same state I live at and among them some (the big ones) keep very well in the refrigerator (without getting dark) up to a week. Hass variety does not keep that long. Besides, the wild avocados are organic even though they are not certified organic. A tip for your guacamole: cut the onion and squeeze the lime/lemon/sour orange* on them and let them rest while preparing the rest. I make one with cucumber and cilantro which I like better than the one with tomato. *For my taste using sour orange is way better than using lime or lemon. If you already have done the referred test above, forgive my comment please.
