Hey Jared. I just wanted to let you know a while back I submitted English captions to two of your videos (Episodes 52 [titty fruit] and 158 [apricot kernels]). This was the first time I had ever done that for a video, and was exploring how the system worked. Two issues. First, both videos are still showing the dumb machine, error laden, auto-generated English captions. I know little about the inner workings of KZbin, but I think you need to approve the "translations", in order for them to replace the auto-generated default captions. Second, it appears that many of your videos are administratively locked in some way, so that even if someone wanted to help out by doing such a translation, they can't. The actual message when you try is "The video you requested isn't enabled for community contribution..." I thought you might not be aware of that, and might want to change that setting. Regards.

John! Thank you for taking the time to subtitle those two videos! I didn't get any notifications that there were any submissions, but I just checked and there they were. I just reviewed and approved both, so they should be up now. Thanks again for the help, the automatically generated subs leave a lot to be desired, so this is a great help!

Oh wow! I’ve been going to Murray Family Farms for years! My parents live about 15 minutes away from it and I always try and stop by when I’m visiting home. I had no idea they had a family member that was interested in unusual rare fruit! I’m more familiar with their amazing pluots which are the best you can get anywhere! That’s a tricky part of the CA to grow many types of fruit because of the cold winters and super hot summers but it’s great to see that those of us who love growing rare fruit can always find something that works well wherever we live!

In Arizona we have those except the fruit is large plump and yellow, the flesh tastes sour and lemon like with a hint of grapefruit rind and the seeds are pretty much like how you described them, you should try one of these fresh and plump from Arizona they are pretty good
@smashpillow85134 жыл бұрын
Those fruit looked sub-par. Usually, the barrel cactus fruit are a much brighter yellow, and taste like a mix between a lemon and a kiwi. Slighly sweet and very sour. They do taste best candied, but you can pickle them in brine or cut it into strips and make a tasty chutney. I dont know very much about that other one, and haven’t seen any in az.
@smashpillow85134 жыл бұрын
O yah, you can eat the flesh of a barrel cactus too. Be careful tho, some of em can make you sick. Best not to try unless you need water.

The growth habit of the columnar cactus is "organ pipe" (basal branching rather than arms like a saguaro). Cereus fruit ("apple cactus" though it is supposed to taste like honeysuckle nectar) is also smooth in every case I have seen. My guess is one of the true organ pipes (Stenocereus, formerly Lemairocereus)--which are valued for fruit and livestock fencing in arid Mexico (though many of those have magenta-red fruit pulp), though some plants called "torch" have red, cigar-shaped flowers (also organ pipe growth pattern, but usually narrower stems?). Those are Cleistocactus ("silver torch" is C. straussii and quite handsome). I have not heard of them being commercially important for fruit, though it is edible. If your host could describe the flowering traits &/or where it was originally native, it might be a little easier to key out. Fun fact: the flowers of that barrel cactus are cooked "like cabbage" and pickled like sauerkraut. I think I would prefer to let it ripen fruit instead.
@WeirdExplorer7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the insight Erik. i had trouble IDing this one, seemed very similar to the Peruvian apple cactus fruit, which is why I labeled it as a Cereus.

There was a Discover channel show called "Survivorman" featuring Les Stroud who would film himself surviving for a week with literally only the clothes on his back(and maybe a few tools). One episode was from a desert location out west in the U.S. He showed how the Barrel cactus fruit could be eaten as well as the fruit from a member of the Mammillaria genus, called the Strawberry pincushion. The cactus was really small and the fruit was red and the size of a small chili pepper. He said it tasted like a cross between a strawberry and a kiwi. Stores like Home Depot sell small cactus in the same genus that grow little fruit. They are the little cactus with the small flowers on top. Those flowers, however, are fake flowers that are hot glued onto the cactus to make you think they are blooming.
@WeirdExplorer7 жыл бұрын
Hot glued on? Man... thats low.
@JaesadaSrisuk7 жыл бұрын
Weird Explorer You don’t know the half of it. At garden departments around the US, they sell succulents that are dipped in blue or pink paint and covered in glitter so that the plants can’t photosynthesize and die within a few weeks after unsuspecting people purchase them.

Ya he thought it was "Torch" likely referring to "Peruvian Torch" (Which it is not, that Trichocereus peruvianus), this is def. a Trichocereus species.

A few cereus and trichocereus species contain mescaline. Actually, San Pedro cactus can contain more mescaline than peyote. I've taken it once or twice, pretty easy to make. If that IS Peruvian Torch, then the flesh of the cactus can make you trip, yes.
@WeirdExplorer5 жыл бұрын
the fruit does too? or just the plant flesh?

Fruits are often different than the parent plant like with the case of the anacardiaceae species (Mango tree sap and pistachio sap can make you itchy just as the others in the family like poison ivy can via urushiol) or perhaps with the family solanaceae, where you can eat tomatoes and eggplant, but eating the plant itself is not advised. Even with members of the holly genus Ilex, you can use a few of the member's leaves but not the berries, which is the case with Yerba Mate, Guayusa and Yaupon. This is not always the case, however like with the potato plant. It just depends on the species.
