I'm a proud owner of an original Aitor Oso Negro from the Portuguese Army, with the words "Exército Português" carved on the blade. I've bought it before I start the special forces course and carried it for all the course. What an amazing knife. It does everything you want from a knife and more. It breaks every piece of wood apart. It cut logs... Everything. And she stills cutting amazingly after all this time.

Great review! I was introduced to Aitor knives while in Australia, I had an opportunity to go on a walkabout camp trip into the Kakadu National Park years ago and almost all the Rangers in the field had Aitor NATO Bowies on them. They were not always with our group but on the occasions they camped with us I got to see the knife in action working on the notoriously hard Gum wood and coming through with flying colors. The knife you featured in your review is Aitors civilian model of the Spanish military Cuchillo de Monte a famous knife throughout Europe. After returning to the US I purchased the Bowie and reprofiled it like I saw the Rangers had , and while It does have a little softer steel it sharpens to razor in about 45 seconds on a ceramic rod after a good day of use, which I really don't mind as kind of ritual in camp at night. I think you would like the Bowie better just as I have- no saw on spine and you can choke up to do finer tasks.

The shape of that blade has a lot of the "falcata" ( spanish historical sword. This brand & model( Aitor " oso negro") has been issued to several military corps. Is not new, it's been tested a lot & most of knife fans in Europe( & probably the world) think is a great blade.

Just a couple of things: 1- Kukris usually are nor double edged and the recurve shape is much more pronounced. Oso Negro is more like an Iberian falcata. 2- First Oso Negro generation (1981) had a bigger and much stronger steell cross-guard (pretty good to open bottles of bear). 3- Oso Negro was the "unofficial" knife for some special units in the Spanish army, like skiers-climbers, SOp etc.

Hi, yeah as you know I reviewed the Olive wood version of this knife. It is a beast of a knife and not likely to fall apart on me LOL. As for the steel keeping an edge, well my one was a little uneven in the grind and I'm trying to right that. But yeah, it hasn't been too bad even if it got a bit dull after a day of cutting wild mushrooms but the caveat was that I had cut into grass and dirt all day, hacked up hardwood for BBQ, cut chicken on ceramic plates and general arsing about LOL, and silica on grass and dirt don't do well to any knife steel either. Good review too.

I should have suggested the bk5 to you for your cutting test, it's the best slicer in the bk series, it's thinner behind the edge than most folding knives and might have made your test a bit more easy going. LOL, I'm actually a little nervous about the testing, you better not let me down 1095 cro-van!
@moparhemi17777 жыл бұрын
It probably will be just fine because most of the blades in 1095 (cro-van or not) are used most often for working with wood and shine with the forgiving nature of the steel^^ Even if the cutting test with rope shouldn't show an exciting performance, the steel has its well earned place in the knife industry.
@CedricAda7 жыл бұрын
Mopar HEMI exactly, every steel has a purpose, and edge retention, to me, is much lower on the heirachy of importance when compared to toughness and edge stability. But I reckon the Cro Van will do pretty good edge wise too

I "was" considering getting this knife until, I saw your freshly sharpened edge cut rope only 25 times. Completely stop after only 25 cuts? I really liked that knife BUT, over 100 bucks on 440A, maybe B stainless? My heart sank... I remember your very clear warning about if it just says stainless steel, it's probably "crap steel"! And after only 25 cuts on a freshly sharpened knife (by you no less), proved that the steel in this knife is shit! Thank you!!! You just saved me from having a over 100 dollar disappointment...

With my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe and either my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw or my WoW Folding Saw. But my Wicked Tough Saw would be a good choice too. Yeah, Atleast check it out.,,. p

Buen cuchillo hasta hace 25 años. Desactualizado y caro.
