CNC Build Part 1: Controller Box Build and Set-up

Tip for finding the right motor wire combos ... Take any 2 wires and connect (short) them to each other. Turn the shaft of the stepper motor by hand. If you feel resistance (a fair bit) then the two wires in question are from the same coil. If the motor turns freely then you 'shorted' wires from different coils and have to try a different combination. Once you have the wires paired up, it does not really matter which you put as the first coil, and which as the second (if you have a 4 wire stepper, when it is a 6 or 8 wire stepper things get a bit more complex as you will have to put coils in series or in parallel).

The steppers have 4 wires, one pair for each of the two coils inside... Coil/pair AA & coil/pair BB. You can find the pairs by disconnecting the motors, short 2 of the wires, then try and turn the motor by hand. If the motor is harder to turn, those two wires are a pair. (Either AA or BB) They should always go side by side. If you want to reverse the direction of the stepper, you can swap the two pairs around. EG: AABB or BBAA. But never wire them ABAB or BABA. It doesn't matter which wire of the pair goes first. Just that the pairs are together.

Mounting the electronics in a wooden box does present one important drawback: digital high current switching circuitry usually radiates a lot of RF noise that can cause interference with neighboring electronic equipment. Wood provides no EMI shielding since it doesn't conduct electricity. A better option is to dig up a cheap PC tower case and modify it to fit the electronics in there.

TheDeepNorth I considered this, but I made my own circuits and don't want to risk shorting the circuits. Mine don't cause any problems. But I use caps on limit switches.

One easy way to avoid shorting the circuit boards to a metal casing is to mount them on threaded plastic standoff posts.

TheRainHarvester If you can make your own circuit - you should be able to place it in metal box without shorting it ;) One of the most cummon pitfalls of DIY CNC’s is EMI and noise from spindle, that can be solved by propertly grounding the build and shielding cables.

Beware, cheap USB break out boards tend to loose connectivity easily. I tried some, but instead of going USB, I went with the LPT port.. A PC with a build in LPT port can probably found for free .. Make sure the port supports EPP mode which you can set in the BIOS (other modes probably will not work, as cheap LPT port cards!)

On usb, yes, easier computer to find. Works with free grbl running on a $4 Arduino uno as your motion controller that receives the gcode and sends steps to your motor drivers.

That's Not what he has though right, would you use a chip for each axiss, so only 2 chips for regular lathe? So you still need more computers for joining these, and for doing coputonaly advanced things like radius arcs, or differential arcs.

easiest way to figure out which cables are from the same coil is to have two of them contact and when you turn the motor it should be harder to turn

My suggestion is not to wire cnc's with internal drivers using boards such as grbl because they just don't have the current to run the step motors to get half decent results.

So I have a very large 4 axis cnc mill for building pool cues. Unfortunately it didn't come with a control box. I'm assuming it was originally parallel port driven only based on the old HP desktop that came with it. It's 4 axis. My question is this: since I'm a complete newbie to this, I was thinking about going your usb route you show. What controller did you use so I can try to find a kit?

This looks like the kit I got just recently (controller part) was there any dip switch turned on ? Why is it needed to turn it to 3500khz vs 2500khz and also. Happen know the pin configuration. From port to driver module ? Thanks

The wiring looks good, but has a huge problem. They should all be shielded cables with drain connected on one end to prevent EMI interference between motors. Easy isn't best. Plenty of videos on how to properly use and ground shielded cable.

The interference in this setup is not as bad as you think. Machine has been running great for a long time. Now, my CNC plasma cutter, whole different story because of the high-frequency arc start, and very much has shielded wiring (which I used all the time when I used to wire up aircraft components at Lockheed). Probably the reason people have EMI issues with CNC machines is they run their VFD output (UVW leads) right next to their stepper leads. That is a recipe for disaster. My VFD isn't even in the same cabinet as my motion controller. Just my 2 cents.

The yellow is the +ena. I got nothing when I had the driver +ena connected to +5v on the interface board. I also had the en on the interface board connected to -ena on the driver. I disconnected those and just have +5v on the interface board connected to +step and +dir on the driver, and step and dir of the interface board connected to -step and -dir on the driver. And then it worked. But it was turning in the wrong direction so I changed the cw/ccw switch (one of 8 small flip switches) to change it. The ena doesn't ena when connected, only ena when ena not connected, omg.

@@donovannewton9507 What you're talking about is a slave drive. They are done through the software, so you just need a board that has enough driver outputs for the number of motors you need, then you enable those axis for slave, select and output and a direction, and you're done.

No computer that I own, or any new computer motherboard or already built, has a LPT port. Mach3 is ancient and I believe Mach4 allows USB which is where it is at not an obsolete parallel port.

It took me a minute to find computers that had them. They do sell PCI Express parallel ports that you can add to your motherboard though. As I understand it, the USB breakout boards work very well and are easy to setup. So might as well go that route if you're already having trouble with sourcing an adequate tower.

There are USB to parallel converters. They are like $5. However they are designed for printers. Not sure if you can get mach to work with them, or even if they have all the needed pins connected.

@@danielch6662 From what I read shortly after I posted here those don't work. Something to do with power and/or pinouts as Mach used a few pins for timing that a LPT to USB leaves out. A true IEEE-1284 to USB would be the only way as that would have all 25 pins used, but even then I have my doubts.

I bought exactly the same kit you have, and I did exactly the same but still does not work. The motor drivers will blink green when i jog but there is no signal coming out to the motors from any of them, I know it is not the motors because i measure it with voltmeter. Can you please share your setting for the mach3 and the wiring diagram. Thank you

Awesome SG. Thanks for doing this. You say at the end of your video is you want a simpler installation and a controller with support you should buy a bit more expensive one. Do you have any suggestions on manufacturers and model info? You have four drivers set up in your box, are you going to add another for your 5th axis, or are you only doing a 4 axis CNC?

I can’t recommend any other controllers because I’ve only used these two, but the reviews online for other units will give you the “pros/cons”, and it all boils down to what you want. I can say ditch the parallel ones, and get one that is compatible with Mach 3. Some have proprietary software, and you WILL have better luck and support with Mach 3 because everyone uses it. I’m only planning on running 4 motors, and my kit only came with 4 drivers, so I’ll just leave the “B” axis off, no biggie. The BIGGEST headache is finding a computer with the right operating system and a parallel port. They are out there, but it takes digging, and I don’t want to lead you guys down the most difficult path. I can suffer just fine, I don’t want to put you guys through that.

Thanks SG. Wife has an OLD computer with a parallel port. Specs are AMD Atholon Processor 1.1 GHz, 256 MB RAM and it's running XP Home Edition 2002 SP 3. Will this work for running Mach 3 and the other software necessary to run a CNC?

Something I noticed, we have exactly the same utility knife (Milwaukee Fastback). I have been carrying this knife since 2012 and will never carry another utility knife. I also have the same Klein wire stripper/cutter, the cutter blade is messed up a bit from burning it on a live wire on mine though :-( Here is the kit I am thinking about purchasing. Ted H That's the same kit as mine. Just with one less axis. If I were you I would ditch the parallel port! The usb on this is just to power the controller. A Milwaukee rep gave me one in like 2011, and I just can't use other knives since then! Definitely the best!

Precisely. Both of my computers were headed to the scrap bin before I got them. You really just need a parallel port, and the computer needs a program called "mach3" to run the cnc controller. Other programs work, but Mach3 is the main player in the game. The computer can be the hard part, but patience will pay off! Good luck my friend!

Healthy Grow Should be able to use the control relay built into the board, and use that to turn on your lazer. The relay is only 5v, so you will likely need another relay and power supply to step up to whatever voltage you need. That'll be a cool project!

alejandro pena I'm afraid both of my controllers are parallel driven, so we're dead in the water there. The truth is though, I was not able to get my first one to work by myself. I have a friend who builds computers, and I had him configure the com port to talk to the CNC controller (turns out i had the wrong OS for the version of mach3 i was trying to run, dont be like me!). Perhaps you know someone with better knowledge of this process? I'm an amateur with computer hardware so I was the wrong guy for the job! I only personally know one guy who uses a usb based CNC controller, and he said setup was basically "plugging it in". His is a sainsmart, but I'm sure they're all that simple. Regrettably, I have no first hand experience with that subject. I hope this helps, good luck!

I believe Mach 4 is USB only. They wanted to have more specific software as people were getting away from parallel ports, because mach 3 is parallel based. So I don't think i could use it if I wanted to. Also I already have mach 3, so that seals the deal.

@@StrangeGarage Actually it has support for parallel too with the 'Parallel Port Legacy Plugin for Mach4' ... But really, you should do yourself a favor and move to something better, I would even advise ethernet as EM interference is a bit of a bother on USB (and some of the lower cost china spindles do generate a lot of EMI).

nice video. I just got one question! does every controller compatible with every controller software? I bought a CNC machine from China, and the software as been a nightmare. it came with Mach3, but not the original, in which I tried to install it, all the defenses of my computer went on red alert. Even after install it, I couldn't make the machine move 1mm. as well, it seems like, Mach3 just work on windows XP or 7. bad thing if they want to keep a market share... Now I've order an Arduino uno, with the Arduino shield, and try to run the machine with the universal Gcode sender, and try to use and use the stepper motor controllers and the power unite that came with the machine, that way it wouln't be a total loss of money. I appreciate you could shed some light on this topic, or maybe you have already a video about this subject, that you could pass me the link. thanks so much in advanced. best of luck with your KZbin channel

The individual components are all a Chinese Hodgepodge of electronics, so no two kits are going to be identical. The base components are the 5 axis TB6560, and the drivers. You can use NEMA 17, 23, or 34 motors and you should be fine. Power supplies are even more universal. I've used the included one, I've use a laptop charger, even a car battery in a pinch. Basically, there is no "perfect" kit, regrettably.

The software is super basic. It could pretty much run on windows 98, so as long you have a parallel port you can use any computer. One of my computers has windows XP, the other has 7, I've had no issues with either computer.

Wish I seen this comment before I ended up going with 18 gauge wire, I watch another vlogger where he connected the electronic components together, Yes I have wired it up BUT I couldn't test it due to the parallel to USB cable was the wrong type parallel plug, so I ordered a new cable, as my pc does not host a parallel port. Just sad as my kit never came with any paper work apart from the invoice ;-( I have no idea weather I need to change any dip switches on the Driver as of now they are still set to default. Lol, that's exactly the situation I found myself in every time I built one. My 3D printer was the same way. It's almost like the computers with parallel ports are worth more than the controller. I tried for 2 weeks (not kidding) to get a PCI add-in port to work, and it literally never did. I called a computer guy and told him "I can't", so he did. Been working great ever since.

I just recently brought a UC100 parallel port adapter (yeah I could of brought a used computer for the same price with a virus or 2 with a parallel port from some dodgy person in a dead end culdesac off craigslist. ) as I read into afew vlogs not all parallel ports will work with CNC or Mach3. There was nothing wrong with that wiring diagram (it's working now) as I all most came close to rewiring when I decided to check if mach3 would detect the estop and it did not so I thought just maybe it was not receiving any signal from pc to breakout board and I was correct. soon as I connected that over priced expensive hardware it came to life those people must be making a killing off that device. My next step is trying to calibrate stepper motors via mach3 . With not luck yet as the auto setting is not helping unless I have some setting value wrong else where, I use the auto setting put how far I want it to move (50mm), then measure that distance then input that into the text box, then it auto updates, I recheck it and it moves 30mm, so I go through the process once again and it gets smaller, kinda like 5 steps forward and 2 steps back, and if I keep repeating it will get to the stage it won't move. so I don't know maybe I have something set wrong else where ( thank you china for the wonderful product with no instructions )

As far as electronics, I just used a TB6560 controller kit with external drivers and nema 23 dual shaft motors. It was all included in the kit. Hey. I bought exactly the same Setup as you have in the Video. The good thing is, Hardware of my Plasma CNC is almost ready. The Bad thing is, i have exactly the same error with the Stepper as you have. My question is: How did you fix it? :) I was really supprised when i saw the same issue :)

In the video I drew on the wiring diagram how I changed it. I can't remember exactly. The motor wires were just out of order. It's apparently really common. Good luck!

@@StrangeGarage OK...it is kind of working somehow. Like promised: 1. I had to change on my win XP PC the Parallel Port BIOS settings from ECP to normal, then the Motor stopped rotating every time i connect the lpt. 2. I rewired the Motor. Not only the ohmic test for the coils is reqired, it is important to have them connected in the correct order. 3. My steps setting in driver was 1, i changed it to 1/16 Now i still have an issue. I think it comes from the lpt, but i expect i need to measure the signal path. When i Press x+ on mach 3, there will sometimes be 1 step. But sometimes the stepper rotates endless until i pressed x+ multiple times again. Any suggestions?

I believe you aren't that clear about mains power. Next time I would suggest to say a disclaimer telling viewers about the dangers of mains and that different countries have different voltages, color codes and other things so that they should check it themselves. They may be surprised to cut off a connector off of a power cord and see some completely different colors and be like WTF?!? Other than that, this video seems very nice! Also, 2:20 dat cable management. Teach me my master! TEACH ME!!!

The only thing I changed was the motor wiring. I drew it onto the diagram towards the end of the video, but I have 8 nema23 motors and the wiring isn’t the same from motor to motor, so I can’t just say “wire it like this” because there is no one way to do it. Sorry this doesn’t really help, this is the exact reason I recommend not buying directly from China. Some people never get their TB6560’s working, maybe I just got lucky twice.

I think you might be mistaking wire color with anything important. You need to identify the windings. They will usually be on the same listing you buy the motors from. But yah that "wiring diagram" they sent you sucks. There are ways to identify windings though so google it.

You didn't give me any details about your setup. Mine is a TB6560 with Toshiba drivers and nema 23 motors, but your system may require a higher ounce output than mine. A table that size my be out of reach for a setup like mine. What type of drive is your table?
