Damn ...JJ is a poised fury with the most flabbergasting Fender Precision sound ever heard, slapping that bass neck during the intro and pulling the tempo like a crazy demon while his mates are barely succeeding in holding back before magically clicking into synchro, and what he does from 3:24 is downright stunning ! Hugh's angular guitar part is a master piece like no other. Dave is absolutely astounding with his mastery and diabolic rollercoaster-like keyboard playing. And Jet Black has this perfect balance between potent drive and sheer finesse. He sounds like no other drummer. And those vocals... ...what an amazing alchemy !

Fucking awesome and very emotional as they get into sync, with that lead ringing out those 5 notes, and that bass, a foreteller, a warning of what lies ahead. Ominous. x

Every song I've heard performed from this gig sounds excellent. They looked great then as well. I really like the 1977 "Punk" era Stranglers records a lot but, for me, the peak of the band commenced with the release of the single "5 Minutes" and then ran all the through to the release of the Thrown Away" single. This classic period for me was inclusive of all the b-sides and e.p tracks from these prior mentioned singles, the albums from "Black and White" through to (and including) "The Gospel According To The MeninBlack" and the solo albums by both Burnel and Cornwell from that era as well. (And all this music is before you get to the live performances from that period, the t.v appearances, the scandal, the column inches in the music papers and the tabloids, the "look" and "Strangled" magazine). Following this "classic era", I thought "La Folie" and that era's singles and respective b-sides were good and likewise for the "Feline" era (although, I would probably choose the "La Folie" era out of the two). The "Aural Sculpture" era was just "ok" to my taste (although I've always really liked the track "Here and There") but the "Dreamtime" era I found only "listenable". I feel the band had lost it by the "10" era and, following Cornwell's exit, I'm not interested at all in the band or Cornwell solo. Overall though, a classic band that, even to this day, is criminally under regarded in critical circles. A massive part of my youth and influence on me personally. Indeed, I can't over estimate how important a band they were to people of my background and age group (I'm 50 now) throughout the "classic" period I've defined above. Slightly older peers from the era were generally more interested in the 1977 "Punk" Stranglers but, if you looked at the kids a little younger, (and, even though the 1977 material was still loved), the band were more important as a "Post-Punk" band. Actually, "Black and White" was, in reality, the first "Post-Punk" record, released before PiL were formed or The Banshees even signed. Love 'em!

For a live performance that was as close to the black and white album as you can get. Fucking spot on. Well done Stranglers. Love the bass playing of JJ Burnell.

Wonderful band at the peak of their powers. Never forget the gigs around this time, they were just fantastic. To be in a darkened venue pissed up at the front whilst Hugh and JJ ratted around to 'Down in the Sewer' was something so so special. Great musicianship, and a great and totally unique sound. Prog punk? Yeah, I'd go for that.

I was there with some friends. Great day, some fill-in moron on stage singing "There's mud on my tyre" ( To the Mull of Kintyre tune ) being pelted after 30 seconds with tins ( some full ), I was impressed by the accuracy of one drunken fellow standing in front of me, his full tin hit the stage and sprayed the idiot on stage with the tins contents. He shouted down the mike " I've been paid, so fuck you all " and ran off stage as the next salvo of tins were launched. Then the strippers during Nice and Sleazy and the drunks attempting to get on the stage to dance with them.. The tank firing blanks during 'Tank' and the stagehands putting flash bangs into drums with some flammable substance in to simulate the shells hitting the stage. Alas the righthand part of the stage dressing caught alight and had to be extinguished.. Peter Gabriel was superb as always. Then Concorde flew directly overhead and dipped its wings ( how the hell that was arranged I will never know ). All in all a good day out.

***** The memories are still very fresh for me and I really cherish that day. Live music can be so good it can leave a smile on your face every time you recall it. The important thing is for people to go and watch live music and immerse yourself in it. I used to go and watch live music a lot, so I have a great deal of mostly superb memories, with the odd howler, Thank you for comment.

No doubt our Bear friend! I'm afraid Hugh has a mix of fear and anger towards J.J. which I guess will never be cleared up. He said in his book J.J. attacked him a few times over the years and its really unfortunate they never speak anymore. It reminds me of the fear and loathing Vinnie has for Phil in Pantera.
@Chrisamusic18 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and in his book Hugh constantly refers to JJ as 'John', .... which I'm led to believe never really went down well with our bass hero.
