No till is a great idea if you don't have a heavy clay based soil. We have to till or the soil is rock hard.

Totally agree! Here in the red clay of the south it rains, the sun comes out, bakes the ground into bricks!

I actually did an experiment with our heavy red clay. I double dug (basically tilling) one bed and then mulched. The next bed I just covered with cardboard, compost and mulched. I planted carrots in both. Wouldn't you know the bed I "tilled" was impossible to pull the carrots from and the one I didnt till the carrots came right up.

My daughter works at a pig farm. She brought home the piglet mats they use in the winter. They are made from compressed corn millings and make fantastic, natural mulch. Weeds are controlled and the strawberries never looked so good. I'm doing the 4th picking right now.

Did you see their last video about using cardboard to make a quick garden? That softens the ground underneath and feeds it.

Thank you for the discussion on weeds. So often people fuss about having this or that weed problem here and there making me want to flick them in the forehead.

Obviously you don't have field bind weed. Roots are over 50 foot long, won't die if pulled and will strangle your garden. My nephew did get a state grant to use bugs to control weeds and he found a weavel that will kill it. It takes about 3 years for the weavel to get to get to critical mass and kill it. Unfortunately, where I live weavel won't over winter because it gets to cold and kills the weavel. Too expensive to keep applying weavel yearly and never gets to critical mass. Don't know what to do other than chemicals in late fall which won't kill it but slows it down. Any suggestion on getting rid of this weed and Japanese knot weed would be much appreciated.

🇺🇸👨‍🌾☀️Chat away we are here, there’s a great app called “Picture this”. You take a pic of the plant and it tells you all about it. I have so many weeds that are medicinal ie. Burdock, Common True Heal, Plantain(great for bee stings) and so many more🌞of course dandelions , haha you are talking about it now .

You should also address invassive species, ivy, nightshades, morning glory, blackberries & several others that just need to touch soil to "replant" themselves from a leaf, a piece of stem, etc... My yard is getting them from the neighbors' yards & spend more time fighting them than doing what I want in my yard... Just a thought.

Happy Fathers Day! We have this horrible weed called bind weed that has a huge taproot. It’s impossible to pull it out even when it’s little. It’s a vining plant and stays low to the ground until it finds something to climb and spreads something terrible. Any ideas on controlling something like that? I’ve dug it out of my kids sandbox before and a tiny new plant at the surface had a foot long taproot already! We didn’t plant half of our garden area this year because it was so infected last year. We are trying to just get that crap under control by cutting them off at the surface as soon as we see them. Any other thoughts?

I want to build up my soil by mulching but I flood irrigate. My rows aren't very high so I don't have to flood as long to get the water to the plants. Do you have any tips on how I can still mulch? Thanks. Also, great video, very informative!

I’ve never seen purslane grow wild, and I have trouble finding it in garden centers but it is one of my favorite flowers. I thought that even before I realized it was edible and so delicious and before I even knew it was a weed. It is beautiful in pots and very drought tolerant. Unfortunately, as I found out in my 5 years in TX, deer LOVE it so I have to think carefully about where to plant it. I once had a 4x8 foot raised bed of purslane and my 3 year old granddaughter was living with me temporarily. I showed her it was edible and taught her this was the only plant she was allowed to pick and eat. By the end of the summer, my bed was decimated, and my extremely picky eater granddaughter had tons of extremely nutritious food in her body!!! I was a happy “MiMi!”

Can you tell me what you use for mulch, I know it’s some kind of wood chips but it looks very fine. what kind of wood chips are good and if you can’t produce them yourself what should we look for? Is there wood that would not be good to use?

We have elm trees that broadcast their seeds like nobody's business! They seem to be able to grow in anything! And even with a couple inches of woodchips I still pull out elm tree seedlings by the handful! Lamb's quarters is also quite invasive for us, actually our first year gardening that was pretty much the only thing we could get to grow (well and purslane and common mallow) so that's what we ate! We have irrigation water which is known for throwing weed seeds, and even with mulching we still end up with lots of weeds growing, any idea why?

I have the same problem but add in redbud seedpots and maple tree helicopters, grrr. What helped me this last fall was covering up my garden beds with floating row covers. All the seeds were accumulating in the walkways which I had lined with cardboard which made it a lot easier to just rake or sweep them up.
@raylingomen2562
@raylingomen2562 4 жыл бұрын
@@andreamortimer2610 that's a great solution! I'll look to see how we can incorporate something similar. Do you keep the row covers up all year or just when you know the trees are dropping their seeds?

@@alanchilds1456 You are welcome and good luck! They also don't like lavender, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, cloves, and tea tree oil. If you soak cotton balls with any of those essential oils and place them around their nests (hill openings), they are very likely to move their colony to a different spot. I don't like killing them as they serve important purposes within nature. However, if they refuse to move you can keep on flooding their nests or, as a last resort, kill them with baking powder (make sure it contains baking soda) mixed with sugar or apply DE.
