The most sublime rendition of this I have heard. Humbling.. And I’m so glad to have found your site tonight Jeff. First enjoying Foxes & Fossils before finding your Voces 8 playlist.

Jeff, I am so happy I found your page and group of followers. I have always consider my musical taste a bit of eclectic because I find it enjoyable to listen to so many different types of music. It is nice to know I am not the only one with such taste in music. To those who suggest music thank you, I have found so many groups I had never heard of before and found great enjoyment listening to their works. Some days when night has fallen my Engineering brain will not slow down so that I can rest. Music and song such as this one in the dark and earphones will calm the mental storm so I can rest. Thank you voces8

I have heard this piece with larger choral groups and with symphony, but this is my favorite. Eight voices, clear as light itself, intertwining the lines of music into transcendent beauty.

The pause after the crescendo at 6:22 was mentioned as one of the most beautiful in music. Amen. The reverb was beautiful! Let me add, as a former choral singer, that hitting that chord after the huge drop in pitch, and the period of silence, is one of the most difficult things for a singing group to do well. Jeff has frequently mentioned that with Voces 8 He doesn't have to think about the pitch. I've heard them in concert twice, and recorded most every day. They are always right on. And in this case, as difficult as the drop is, they were perfect again.

It was such a pleasure to perform Barber and alike, and the public was always very impressed; our a Capella SATB choir had a pretty solid reputation in the region .... but I have to admit; we never sounded like this ... not even in our dreams.

This piece by Samuel Barber was first written as a string quartet. Then it became a full orchestral piece, and finally a choral piece using the words from the Latin mass Agnus Dei (Lammb of God). This performance is so beautiful. The pause at 6:22 after the crescendo is one of the most magnificent moments of silence in music.

Agreed. It has since become known as the saddest music in the world.

Hi Richard! This is a great choice, and, in fact, I caught it a half hour after it dropped back in June, and I immediately wrote Jeff to ask if you had put it in yet. He said you hadn’t yet, but I was certain you would, and here it is:) What an awesome performance - thank you for sharing it with the rest of our great community!

Brian, It matters not how the music gets requested, just that the good stuff always gets requested. We members all work together to keep the smile on Jeff's and all our faces!

I can't imagine this performance of Barber's Agnus Dei being performed any better. The phrasing, the perfect pitch, the breath control, the sensitive dynamics...all were perfect...

There is an orchestral version of this called “Adagio for Strings” which is just as stunning with a whole different timbre. Fabulous performance of a great piece.

If this isn't played at my funeral, I'm not going (unless it's the Durufle Requiem)

Very well done for sure, but I am still partial to the original version for strings. Probably because that is the version I grew up with. I was a student of Thomas Briccetti who was a student of Barber.
