After the Viking ages Norway joined in a Union With Sweden and Denmark, Swedes left after a while so Norway and Denmark was in Union for 4-500 years up to the Napoleonic wars, then we ended up on Napoleons side, we all know how that ended and Norway was given to Sweden as a Bounty by the big nations, then in 1905 we said nuff is enuff and had a smooooth revolution with the Swedes, wounded 0 dead 0. That will never happen. EU is a lot less favorable now than it has ever been. This is why we haven't had any new referendum since 94. It's so bad that it's more likely that Norway leaves EEA than joining EU. This is mostly because of EU turning more and more authoritarian lately.

Well yes the Iron was sweedish but: "German industry was heavily dependent on the import of iron ore from the northern Swedish mining district, and much of this ore was shipped through the northern Norwegian port of Narvik during the winter months. Control of the Norwegian coast would also serve to tighten a blockade against Germany." So germany invaded Norway to secure the Iron Ore imports that where sent from Sweeden through a Norwegan Port.

I didn't know Norway had oil reserves. In NZ there's a lot of debate about whether or not we should drill oil off our coasts, as many people think there's too high of a risk of there being an oil spill and ruining our natural environment. I guess if a country as beautiful as Norway is prepared to do it then so can we.
@Oddi92
@Oddi92 10 жыл бұрын
Well, the oil was first discovered December 23 1969. We started drilling in the 70's and a few catastrophes have happened. Costs in human lives: The worst one for Norway was in 1980 when a drilling-rig named Alexander L. Kielland capsized and killed 123 people. Security was naturally heavily increased after that, but all in all 287 people have died in work related accidents in the Norwegian petroleum industry from 1967 to 2010. The good news is that from 2000 to today, only 9 people have died in work-related accidents in the Norwegian petroleum-industry. New safety measures is constantly being made, slowing productivity, but increasing the safety. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_L._Kielland_(platform) The largest oil leaks: Ekofisk Bravo in 1977 with approx. 12.700 m3 Statfjord A in 2007 with approx. 4.400 m3 Statfjord C in 1989 with approx. 1.400 m3 Statfjordfeltet in 1992 with approx. 900 m3 Draugenfeltet in 2003 with approx. 784 m3 Just to show you the backside of the medal. If New Zealand decides to start drilling, the government should make sure to hold the big oil companies in a tight leash and make sure things are done in a safe way. The petroleum companies main concern is their income. So someone must force them to use the truly costly safety measures. I totally understand the scepticism, and in the northern areas of Norway, we are having the same discussion as you Kiwis in New Zealand. There's a lot of rare wildlife that a huge oil leak could damage. Still not as rare as New Zealand's wildlife though. The good part of it all is of course our profits, Norway has become truly rich and has the largest wealth fund in the world, which is money we save for the future, and to stabilize our economy. You can always see the fund's market value in the following link: www.nbim.no/en/

Norway demanded that the union with Sweden ceased to exist and declared war against Sweden and its ally Germany in 1905. Norway never wanted a union with Sweden in the first place, but the winners of the Napoleon war in 1814 thought it was an great idea to split Norway and give norwegian soil Greenland and Iceland to Denmark, and the rest of Norway to Sweden. All this just because Norway was in union with Denmark. And BTW it was Denmark which sided with Napoleon, not Norway. And because of that Norway started to make plans to end the Denmark-Norway union while the Napoleon war was still going on. Sweden also gave support to the nazis when the nazis invaded Norway in 1940. Prisoners from Norway were sent thru Sweden to concentration camps in Poland. The nazis also sent lots of weapon thru Sweden.

One of our biggest problems today is the governments unwillingness to spend money. The popularly dubbed "oil fund" (where the money made from our natural oil reserves is piled together) is larger than humanly fathomable and the main reason why Norway is the richest country in the world pr capita (even with only 5 million people, we actually have more money than the US government as a whole, and not just pr capita). Unfortunately, the government we've had for the past decade or so has been highly unwilling to dip into that fund, even the slightest. Our new government (elected 2013) are doing their best to fix this, and the budget for 2015 is higher than ever. Personally, whilst our military is by no means bad, I'm hoping for an increase in military spendings, then again, Norway are very close military allies of many countries, including the US, so if Russia decides to go after us once they're done taking Ukraine, we should be able to repell them. The main problem is of course that we border Russia in the far north, where our population is very low, and although we do have border protection there, we need more.
@FrasierCraft
@FrasierCraft 10 жыл бұрын
The oil fund, also called the pension fund, was souly founded to prevent futurer crisis, and help avoiding declining in our constant economy. Also, it is meant to prevent Norway going bankrupt, or having to pay less in pension, which Sweden experienced in 2007, where they were in debt to their own population. Jens Stoltenberg, our former prime minister, educated State economist, says (along with other economist), that spending a higher percentage would increase the risk of inflation, which we have seen happening in both USA, UK and Spain. As of the Russian/Ukranina "invasion", there was no military action from Russia that took place in Ukraine. Pro militant inhabitants of Crimea, did however, take action against the suppresing military force of Ukraine. There was two votes at Crimea. Both asking the inhabitants if they wanted to join Russia. First time the vote was by Russia and Ukraine, second time it was by UN, excluding both Ukrainian and Russians state officials. Both votes resulted in a decisive Russian majority. As of history, we know that Crimea was Russian 50 years ago, and is mainly inhabited by Russians. Russia never took Ukraine, never invaded Ukraine, never took military actions against Ukraine. The inhabitants of Crimea did. The whole Crimean crisis is a conflict blown up, trying to set Russia in a bad light. And fighting fire with fire, never works. We do not need to invest in any more military. We have done far too much already, helping with the 131,916 civilian (03.11.2014 17:10) deaths in Iraq. Our two most right radical parties (capitalist/liberalist parties), want's to use less money on our military anyway, (which I personally find good), so it is weird that you support them if you think otherwise. Here is a fun fact that I think everyone should know. There have never been fewer deaths caused by war or conflicts as off today. We are declining in the number of conflicts, and political scientists believe that we are declining from the era of war, and going into a new era of peace. It seems to be that war is too expensive, and the profit of taking land is to low. Countries earn more on trading and diplomatic relationships. Just search it up yourselfes!

zadona254 What? Then what would you call tens of tanks and thousands of armed soldiers marching across Ukraine, and having surrounded the ukranian military? A friendly visit? You are cleary brainwashed by the russian regime. I wouldn't call it a new rise of the soviet union, but it is Russia being warmongering. They've invaded ukraine. All satelite image data, field reporters, video and photos as well as official reports from the ukranian military and population, confirms it. In fact, the only source that denies it, is the russian government. At first, Putin completely denied it. Recently, he's backtracked a bit, and said there "may be some people from Russian in Ukraine, but they're not Russian* ". (*like that makes any sense) Russian fighter jets have been flying closer and closer to the borders of it's neighboring countries, especially my own, Norway. Our military is now in crisis meetings to ramp up border security as well as make strategies and plan on what to do should Russian jets cross the borders (they are getting closer and closer, with gradually more aggressive flying)

Thomas Torrissen Please, Russia is feeling threatened. and so has a good reason to be, why did u Think this whole ukraine situation started in the first Place?. Do you Think russia whould have invaded ukraine ww2 style and taken control of a country that was in so much debt to US and EU that hell even china would rather nuke the Place then to having spending Money to save ukraine. And havent you stopped to ask yourself why russia, if you claim they "invaded" havent aready taken ukraine aready? you can honestly not think ukraine has a chance against russia in a military conflict do you? And i would like to mention to you to stop listening and beliving to all major european news channels /papers or whatever, as almost all of them are propaganda to demonice russia and/or the middle east. then going back to Ukraine you seem to Think Ukraine is a peaceful country whishing the best for everyone. Well..... i can tell you that is not the case. the entire ukraine goverment now are composed of Neo nazis, this has even been confirmed by european news (ofc these news have been silenced now) aswell as from the people of ukraine. I would like you to understand that russia is faced with an ultimatum from US and Ukraine, Eathier you let us kill the part of the population that are russian (Donetsk,Luhansk etc) or we impose sanctions against you. Do not piss away money on military spending, god fucking damn. There are zero threats in the world that have required military intervention in the last 20 years at least. Maybe the Iraq invasion of Kuwait. Maybe the genocide in the Balkans. That's it from now till WW2. Having a big military is a waste of money and just encourages shitty governments to send people off to die for no reason other than to try and make the fucking Americans happy. Norway does not need any serious military force.

Well according to "The impact of World Trade Organization Agreements on fish trade", "Norway imports more than half its food needs." Why does that come to a suprise to anyone? A nation that far north, with so little arable land, must import food. Just like the people of Arizona have to rely on irrigation to get water in the desert. The Norweigan Lapps has 37,000 people, that is only 0.7 percent of Norway's total population.

No, Germany invaded Norway to secure a source of Iron Ore which was located in Northern Sweden. They needed the port of Narvik to easily get iron ore out of Northern Sweden and down the coast of Norway, via rail, to Oslo where it could easily be shipped to Germany. Keep in mind this is information gathered from the book, "The Ordeal of Total War" written by a British author.

you went through hell? what did you do, go to war with Denmark?! I admit, I am ignorant on Norway's history; well, I know the big picture, but no details; still I doubt you went through greater hell to get your country than say Poland, Croatia, Ireland, Greece, etc. All countries that are in the EU now; as far as I know, being in the EEA, you follow all the rules of the EU; except for fishing and agriculture; are those the rules you find unreasonable?

In 1108 the Norwegian King sacked Lisabon from the moors and held it for 3 years before moving on towards the Holyland, it was the only Norwegian Crusade. that was a Christian force with the King and his army/navy, after Jerusalem he went up to Bysant where he gave away the fleet to the ruler and rode home through Europe. After him it was atleast a 150 years of civil war and the end of our Royal bloodline, after that it was unions with Sweden and Denmark on and of up to our day, roughly

Australia's interest in Asia is for no Asian nation to dominate Asia. But for there to be a ballance of opposing forces thereby ensuring peace. China has not yet come near to the milirary strengh it needs to dominate Asia. Plus China has been doing all it can to create an alliance against it by it's support of Pakistan and it's actions in the south china sea and it's threats to take Japanese islands. Australia wants a ballanced prosperious Asia as a marketplace for it's resources.

Hahaha, the reason it is "hard to populate" is because people just don't want 10 kids.
@milenumilena

Most of the Norwegians I know have atleast 3 kids. You will not have a problem having many children: school is free, housing is not expensive, when you give birth to a child you receive 6 thousand dollar from government. Monthly you receive 150 dollar for each child until they become 18 years old. After birth for a complete one year, the parents will receive walfare. So I don't see any economic reason not to have children, except for if you don't want children.

Foreign citizens in Norway constitutes 8,8% of the whole population, 449 000 out of 5 051 000 residents. 77 000 are polish, the largest group, and 44 000 are swedes, the second largest one, which you should't really consider as immigrants: they are the same and speak the same language (think of it as a dialect). If you take into account Norwegian-born to immigrant parents, then we have a figure which is 14,1% and it's nothing special compared to other European countries.

Except in Norway you cannot quite trust official figures regarding immigration. They always try to make immigration look better than it actually is. For example, the official immigrant population figure of 14.1 % does not correspond with other official figures such as population growth and Norwegian women's fertility rate. The population has increased from 4 to 5 million, but for decades the fertility rate has hardly been enough to sustain the population, and 1 million is 20 % of the population

really, are you serious? all norwegians eat is fish? they protect their farmers to an extent that they do not buy their produce from other countries, and have you ever heard of the norwegian food bank? i doubt if there were some catastrophe norway would bw the only ones to suffer, besides have you ever heard of the concept of working together with others to survive, and on another note, the reason that most of its northers geography isnt occupied, have you heard of the lapps, thats where they r.

When did you own Sweden, finland and the UK? Besides almost all the europian countries has owned a lot of land before. Like for example Norway, before Denmark conquered them right after the black death, they owned big parts of sweden, some of Denmarks sea-areas, Greenland, Iceland, Faroe Islands and some British Islands + some Russian and finnish territories. Denmark got the power and gifted away maybe 1/10 of todays Sweden from Norway to them, and gifted away some russian territories from Norway to Russia. And when Norway were given to Sweden because you supported Napoleon you kept Greenland, Iceland, Sea-areas, Faroe Islands, and the British Islands. Norway would have been bigger than Russia (if you count with the parts of the Antartica that Norway 'owns') if you hadn't attacked while Norway were at it's weakest. As an example. Most countries has it this way, not just Denmark :)

anti-EU sentiment is all hype and no substance; the EU is a great thing in the long term; I emphasize long term: the crisis does not define the EU and those that think that are silly; i find it unfortunate that Icelanders and Norwegians would fall to this hype; I hope Iceland and Norway join the EU some day; constantly adding ex-communist countries is not good; a little addition of some prosperous western nation would be a nice change;
