Neil Clark No thank YOU. I'm trying to get back into playing the pipes after about 10 years, and your video inspires me. Your playing/video has done more for me than you'd ever know.

+Neil Clark How are you Neil? Great video. thank you for posting it. question for you, is Orange and Blue the same as Capt. Horne ? thanks in advance.
@NeilClark-FalkirkPiping
@NeilClark-FalkirkPiping 8 жыл бұрын
+joseph gallagher Joe, thanks, no, Orange and Blue is the first Strathspey (two parts), repeated. Captain Horne is the last strathspey before the reel. There are a couple of ways to play it, I've played both , but this was the first way I was shown. Glad you can use the vids

+Neil Clark okay thank you. Appreciate it. Orange and Blue and Capt. Horne sounded a little similar to me so that's I where I was confused on some other videos I've watched. thanks Neil.

yes... nice to hear these tunes played well (instead of sloppy and unmusical as for dancing competitions)... I also love "whistle o'r the lav oot" (the one they play for "Sean Triubhas")...

I can't hear the tune "orange and blue" without thinking, "side back front and back, turn two three four, toe: and heel, etc"... it's inextricably linked to Highland Dancing... too bad, cause it's a great old tune... kind of like how the 9/8 march "Battle of the Som" (forgive my French) will always make me think, "Pas d'bas hop knee beat beat hop hit hit", even though it's really about a bloody WWI battle; not little girls dressed as boys with wicked tight hairdos! lol

+Joseph LoGiurato that's a crumby thing about Highland Dancing... you have to be beautiful to make it look right; male or female... it's like ballet or gymnastics... admit it: no one ever wants to see a fat ugly chick (or dude) do the Fling... it's actually kinda sick when you think about it.

Marvelous sound and scottish snap BTW, what's the make of your chanter ? either RGH or Henderson ? Thank you for your answer

Thanks. I'm 90% sure at that time it was an Inveran by Brian Donaldson

What chanter is that? Is that a Peter Henderson? or a McCallum? Looks like an ABW chanter. Very nice sound, by the way.

+Neil Clark That was quick! It's a very nice sounding chanter. What year? I've been meaning to look for a decent chanter for solo competitions, specifically an African blackwood chanter. I was recommended to find a 1990s Sinclair chanter. If you can recommend me a chanter, that would help immensely.

+David DeBroux I think around 2012, thats when I started back competing. There are loads out there now. You're in the States? Brian Donaldson who made this chanter is out there now. Who are you taking lessons from? I teach via Skype if thats any use. I don't know why someone would recommend a 1990s Sinclair, sure, they are good chanters, but there are plenty readily available now. Niall, Inveran, Macallum MC2, Peter Henderson Solo, Roddy Macleod. Thats just the ones I've heard personally. I'm now playing a Niall, and the chanter in the vid is my spare

+Neil Clark They said it produces a more mellow tone compared to the newer models. I currently live in California. I do not have private lessons at the moment, but I am seeking out for them, and have a likely contender for private lessons for piobaireachd (and maybe for light bagpipe music in Grade III solos). I seem to be interested in the Hendersons since it is in the R.G. Hardie website (I own a set of 1960s R.G. Hardie's bagpipes, including the Bb chanter it came with, and thought it might be suitable). Since ABW chanters are very expensive, I'm seeking to make a more informed decision before buying them, and use my plastic (probably polypenco) David Naill chanter as a backup. Second choice, so far, is getting an ABW Naill chanter, as those are really good chanters in my opinion. Also, I hear private lessons over Skype can be costly for pupils, depending on the person that is doing the private lessons.

+David DeBroux Hope you haven't been asking Dunsire. Lol... An early 90s Sinclair Chanter MAY be flatter than a new model, but thats the same for any 90s chanter as compared to a new make now. You're right to research, they are VERY expensive. Why don't you play a plastic for the first couple of years? At G3 level, its not generally going to make that much difference. Not the Bb, although technically it shouldn't make any difference, you would be much safer with a modern higher pitched. Your playing and technique will be much more important than the slight edge a solo chanter will give you. Learn the tunes well, play well, and let all the gadget guys buy the latest chanter. I'm £10 per 30 mins btw, google Great Glen Piping to check me out

+The Brennan If you look again, you'll see I'm not wearing a plaid either. The reason I'm half dressed is that I would either be on my way to, or just back from, a performance. These are instructional videos, not performances (in the main) This background was my classroom, I took kids there for 2 hours every Tuesday. I'd guess this was filling in time before class. Thanks very much btw.
