In this video we will document the repair of a 1966-67 Fender Blackface Super Reverb circuit. As delivered, it had some serious wiring issues and worn-out tubes, including a 5U4 rectifier, rather than the proper GZ34. These problems allow for a discussion of repair theory as well as demonstration of the relative performance of the 5U4 vs GZ34, both with and without a Current Limiter in series. A demonstration of tremolo speed reduction is also provided. As usual, an audio demo is performed, including each of the effects......tremolo and reverb.....at various levels. We hope you enjoy it.

@@UncleDoug Hey Uncle Doug! Hey got a tidbit of info, on my question about solid state amps and final ohms for lower output. I have just been told from a company that yes running an ohm speaker that produces max watts does in fact stress the internals more than running it at lower watts! Seems even some Marshall would have reliability issues when running a speaker with an Ohm rating producing max watts from the solid state amplifier! I have since altered my speakers/cabs so my solid state amps run at lower watts since I really don't need the extra volume as much as I do the reliability and longevity of my amps! Take care Uncle Doug!

A great demonstration of corrective surgery, Uncle. The previous reprobates ("techs") were reckless, amateurish, and incompetent. It was a complete joy to experience the process in diagnosing the mistakes that were made, and explaining your detailed flow chart of the modality you employ in the step-by-step approach to repair the circuit by compartmentalized order. Thank you for posting! I await this next episode with great eagerness. Enjoy you weekend, uncle. Stay safe and in abundant health.

Awesome. Yours is one of the few channels where I will sit and listen to a half hour or more video with delight! That amp was sure horribly botched and bastardized. It's good that you were able to make it do what it needs to do. No more deflagrations around the input wiring! Sounds great there at the end, at least as far as the audio from KZbin can convey it.

I may never have to repair amps, but the information in your videos is invaluable in helping the lay person understand how an amplifier works and avoid costly repairs down the line. Having said that, your instructions on how to replace two prong cords for the much safer 3 prong variety has helped me to repair and upgrade an old Big Muff Deluxe that had a nasty broken 2 prong cord. The mains cable is from a European source. The brown is Live/Hot and the Blue is neutral return. Green/yellow is the earth. Europe, UK and surrounding area usually run from 220v AC 50Hz. Thank you for your really valuable videos. I have spent many hours watching with a great deal of fascination. I do the same kind of work here on a much smaller scale, in the UK and likewise, have found a great many short cuts other 'technicians' have cobbled together to try and make things work. Consequences can be really significant.

I'm a retired electronic technician and I love your amp videos, and your wit. Breaks my heart and I always say a eulogy for every vintage electrolytic capacitor that has to be sent to the graveyard. lol My '69 Fender Bandmaster & '73 Super-Reverb still have all of their electrolytic caps except for two power supply filter caps in my '69 Super-Reverb.

Thanks, Tony. In my own amps I tend to preserve original components, but I just can't do that with customer amps......unless specifically requested to do so.

@@UncleDoug I like to to keep vintage stuff when I can. But, yes, your modernizing of old amps will for sure benefit your customers to enjoy an amp that will be very reliable for many many years. Leo Fender in my opinion made the beast amps ever made with the Blackface amps. Dumble was the next evolution of tube amps. I own a Dumble clone amp and I love it.

wow that saying something. "one of the most special amps we've had". can't wait for that considering the amps you've already had. thanks again for being commercial free. you have no idea what that means to me. ive got alittle Neil Young in me too.

You're welcome, David. The moment you accept advertising, you open the door to external control of your video content. I really don't need any "partners" in my little video enterprise :)

@UncleDoug i killed all my channels when they started advertising on them. not only do you get a partner but you are endorsing whatever crap they choose. love ya uncle.

That was a botched power cord install you found, Unc. The blue is neutral, brown hot. So the hot side was fused and looks like the neutral originally went in and out of the two outlet lugs, so the amp wouldn't ever turn on unless something was plugged in to that outlet, and being in series with the neutral, whatever was plugged in wound up being a current limiter. After the fire, someone then moved the neutral to the same lug.

Gotta love the mullards! Working on hammonds as i do i always check the junked organs and found a trove of Mullards and vintage RCA tubes, amperex bugle boys, those Hammonds always were stocked well, amd most of them were very mild voltages, so they'll still rock your guitar amp after 50+ years in a Hammond!
