Timo Tolkki has that unique Neo Classical sound that's pretty damn impossible to replace, however, Matias has that Fantasy Power Metal ring, that reminds you of the good old anime era (Knights of the Zodiac), equally irreplaceable. So basically, if you like Neo Classical, go with the old Stratovarius stuff, if you like anime like KOTZ then modern era Stratovarius is just right your alley.

This band entered my musical taste unexpectedly... I lived in Porto Alegre and in one of those internet recommendations I read that they were giving away tickets for the Helloween show at Pepsi On Stage. Unpretentiously, I signed up and received tickets. Nobody wanted to go with me. I got there and the opening was with Stratovarius. After that it's always on my playlist. Long live Timo and band!
