It should be noted too that the points that other people (perhaps rather rudely) brought up about the boat shape were actually validated by your experiences on this trip. Ok, not the offroading experience. That was an unexpected adventure. The bit at the end with all the wind. You have a tall boat with a low wetted surface ratio and no keel at all. When you calculate the stability on this kind of design you get a result known as "Negative GM" in the boat design world. This means that it will always be very unstable and very susceptible to wind effects, as you saw. You had to essentially massively overpower it and utterly abandon the idea of efficiency in order to defeat the wind. Even then you simply could not get the little boat to point upwind. It just kept "falling off" the upwind course, turning back and then falling off in the other direction, zigging and zagging it's way to shore. This was entirely due to the design of the boat. I know you and others have made the comparison to cargo ships. But you are forgetting that scale and proportion matters. Your boat is smaller, but the water isn't less dense to allow your boat to sit lower. So it pops up like a cork on the surface showing massive amounts of freeboard to the wind, even with insane amounts of ballast. Also, the proportions of your boat are nothing like those of a large cargo ship. They are much more like those of a world war 2 "Liberty Ship" or a tramp steamer or fishing vessel. But none of those have flat bottoms. All are traditional compound curved displacement hulls with at a minimum a vestigial keel to help maintain course and hold ballast. This is what the other people were trying, in a very rude way, to tell you. While this is a design that you can "make" work, it isn't a design that is inherently "good" and it needs significant assistance to get to the level of function you want. At minimum, a heavy metal keel bolted securely to the bottom (Literally just a strip of 1/8" x 1.5" mild steel bar) will dramatically improve the straight line performance of your boat. However it won't solve the overall "cork" design problem you have going on. That will take a total redesign of the boat hull. On the off chance you haven't seen this one, here's a short course on ship hull geometry from the Naval Engineering Education Center: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f57PXp-vo89mmK8 It's pretty basic, so I hope you don't take offense to my offering it. But it's a good starting point. They have extensive (and increasingly complex) videos on offer on their channel. Obviously it is oriented towards large naval ship design, so some of what they discuss won't apply, but the overall principles will. Lastly, don't let criticism get you down, and don't take it personally. While I can't speak for anyone else, I love the crazy stuff you are willing to do, and my criticism is offered purely in the spirit of being constructive. I want to do what little I can to help you make better and cooler stuff. I can't wait to see what you come up with next! That gate you reached was for a VOR station. They are used throughout the globe for areal navigation. It stands for Very High Frequency Omni-Directional Radio Range. It shoots out radial beams that indicate which bearing you are travelling through compared to it. If you know which bearing you are passing through, and your distance to the station (displayed on instruments) you can find you position in relation to it.

I couldn't go to sleep until I finished this video. Congratulations for finishing the long trip. As a R/C boat lover I would like to share some tips. One of the best greases for filling the shaft tubing is Molykote 33. It has a very light base oil that doesn't cause much drag when motor is spinning. Being a silicone grease it's extremely water resistant. You can also redesign the propeller shaft tubing by attaching a stuffing box at one end of it and inside the boat. The tubing doesn't need to be filled with grease in this case, but the stuffing box needs to be filled with a mixture of grease and cotton/some other fiber. Then you add a lid to it, the lid can move along the shaft. The you install a l spring or clip that pushes the lid towards the stuffing when loaded, the lid will in turn squash the stuff and keep it tight around the shaft. This sealing can stay water tight for the whole day letting in absolutely no water. EDIT: Forgot to mention the dust part. What an adventure through such a horrible "road". I guess that fine dust is from those broken rocks ground by the water of the lake/river millions of years ago. I may not dare to even go there. Looking forward to more your adventures.

Relocated from Seattle back to Eastern Wa town I had grown up in to raise my children. It's roughly 40 miles from the location you were high centered in, "Moon Dust" (is what we call it). It's unfortunate that no one was willing to give you advice on how to remove yourself from being high centered. It's learning curve, but theres not much else to do other than 4x4 out here, and an experienced driver could have removed your truck with ease. Next time you desire a boat adventure in Eastern Wa, theres a very large, unique lake near there named Omak Lake. It's alkali water and is genuinely one of the most beautiful locations you'll ever visit. This coming from someone that despises the desert. Even I can appreciate it's unique beauty. While visiting If you get stuck again the bois and I will point and laugh, then help. Lol

It'd probably be significantly easier to make an autonomous sailing ship using a flettner rotor rather than a conventional sail but I'm not sure if it would work well at this scale. Also, to make a sailing vessel of any kind, he's going to need a much more stable hull design.

Just a bit of helpful advice from an avid off-roader. Before your next off highway adventure, pick up the stuff on this list and you should be good to go. 1) set of maxtraxx recover boards. 2) tire valve stem deflators. 3) high volume air compressor Airing down to about 15psi will help a bunch in that talcum powder type sand. Without the valve stem deflators,it takes forever to let the air out on all four tires. A company called Morrflate makes a kit that allows you to air UP all four tires at the same time. Did you ever thought of extending your telemetry signal in the air (drone or something)? This would give you temporarily access to telemetry data. You could also equip a drone (not the mavic ;)) with a hook or something to lift the HHS Banana out of the water if there are any problems. I was following the project quite a while, definitely making progress, congrats!

Triangulation. Not a bad idea. A repeater of some sort. Have the boat connect to something on the drone and repeat the signal to the computer

The cool cliffs you were seeing are carved into layer after layer of volcanic rock; the whole area was covered with flood basalt, with the total thickness of all the flows getting up to 3 miles deep in some places, and 2+ miles deep for a lot of the area. It's also part of the reason why the floods from glacial lakes were able to carve so deeply into the rock, since it was relatively easy to pry away at loose fractures and such, and the reason why the nearby Snake River was able to carve the deepest river gorge on the continent (deeper even than the Grand Canyon).
