Hi there! I'm spaniard. First of all, to put into context this song: gipsy people have lived in Spain for centuries. We mistakenly thought that they came from Egipt so we called them 'gitanos' (gipsy). Obviously they are not egipcian, they are romani, an indo-aryan group who moves from an area to another, as nomads. They also call themselves 'calé', wich means in their language 'dark' (kâlâ). So calé = gispy. They call non-gipsy people 'payo'. They got a great reputation as witches, with their famous 'gipsy curse' and all that stuff. So, the lyrics: Tonto el que no entienda ||| Fool who does not understand Cuenta una leyenda que una hembra gitana conjuró a la luna hasta el amanecer ||| Legend says that a female gipsy invoked the moon until dawn Llorando pedía, al llegar el día, desposar un calé ||| Crying she asked, at the coming dawn, to marry a calé 'Tendrás a tu hombre, piel morena', desde el cielo habló la luna llena ||| 'You will get your man, brown-skin', said full moon from the sky 'Pero a cambio quiero el hijo primero que le engendres a él' ||| 'But in return I want the first child you beget to him' 'Que quien a su hijo inmola para no estar sola, poco le iba a querer' ||| 'Cause whoever inmolates her son not to be alone, would love him little' Luna quiere ser madre. Y no encuentras querer que te haga mujer ||| Moon wants to be a mother. And you don't find anyone to make you became a woman Dime luna de plata, ¿qué pretendes hacer con un niño de piel? ||| Tell me, silver Moon, what do you intent to do with a child of skin? (meaning 'of flesh and blood') Hijo de la luna ||| Son of the Moon De padre canela nació un niño, blanco como el lomo de un armiño ||| From cinnamon father was born a child, as white as the back of a stoat Con los ojos grises en vez de aceituna. Niño, albino de luna ||| With grey eyes instead of olive. Child, moon albino '¡Maldita su estampa, este hijo es de un payo, y yo no me lo callo!' ||| 'Dammit, this son is of a payo, and I don't shut it up!' Gitano al creerse deshonrado, se fue a su mujer cuchillo en mano ||| The gipsy thought he was dishonored, so he went to his wife knife in hand '¿De quién es el hijo? Me has engañado fijo', y de muerte la hirió ||| 'Whose child is this? You've cheated on me, granted', and he mortally wounded her Luego se hizo al monte con el niño en brazos, y allí le abandonó ||| Then he flee to the mountains with the babe in his arms, and there he abandoned him Y las noches que haya luna llena, será porque el niño está de buenas ||| The nights when the moon is full, will be cause the child is in a good mood Y si el niño llora menguará la luna para hacerle una cuna ||| And if the child cryes Moon will wane to make him a cradle
