Stravinsky's last public appearance! Thank you very much John Randolph!

Those people who attended that particular performance never realized at that moment how privileged they were to see him in public for the last time... If they knew, probably the applause wouldn't have stopped for hours.

In all likelihood, Stravinsky himself probably didn't know that this was going to be the last time he was conducting in public. If I remember correctly, he had conducting engagements booked through 1969 or 1970. Only a few months later he would conduct for the very last time: suites from The Firebird and Petrushka in Los Angeles. Very tense and apparently unhappy sessions. Robert Craft had to conduct the patch-ups (uncredited).

oh. my. goodness. Having written it, Stravinsky had been conducting the score for 47 years--so completely in musical control, so economical and strong. And the TSO of 1967--all first chair players, what an energetic ensemble. Thank you SO SO very much for this wonderful film footage. Seeing the high curving balcony rails of old Massey Hall--for those of us who cut our orchestral teeth there, it gives an indescribable feeling. Great hall, great sound, great musical memories.

Wow. Igor Stravinsky may have been one of the most brilliant composers of his time, and for time to come. With Stravinsky and other composers like him, no music can compare. Mr. Stravinsky looked so amazing conducting this, and I have heard that this was his last ever role as a conductor before passing away in 1971. So amazing. If there is any kind of music that will live on, it's the classical era. Fantastic job to this orchestra, under the direction of Igor Stravinsky himself.

This appearance was in spring 1967 when Stravinsky was 84 and fairly frail - this was part of a contemporary documentary entitled Stravinsky at 85. It was indeed his final appearance as a performer (which the documentary doesn't refer to since it had not been established when it was released). Stravinsky attended one or more concerts conducted by Robert Craft after this (February 1968) and took a bow (naturally). So this is not strictly speaking his last appearance in public.

He looked so full of life when he was conducting, but he was a frail old man. A genius, but also a man.

And it's why he was so special, despite his frail human nature he was able to transform completely the musical language of its time, becoming one of the most influential figure in the musical panorama. That is not few for me

It is always a joy to hear Stravinsky as played or conducted by Stravinsky. It's as if we could hear a recording of Beethoven or Mozart.

Stravinsky conduce Pulcinella ,pero la música no es de él es de G.B.Pergolesi,es un arreglo de Canciones y Sonatas de dicho compositor del barroco italiano.

Exactly. Performances like this deserve more attention than the stuff that's put on KZbin and social media today. You have a fair point.

Exactly. First time I heard Pulcinella some 40 years ago I thought it was supposed to be played much slower. Now that I have heard the composer himself conduct it I have to accept I have been remembering it wrong all these years.
