Hi Jack, thank you so much for such a detailed video, I’ve just bought a couple of young strawberry plants today and now know what to do with them. I feel more confident in buying many more now, I love strawberries so from next year I’ll hopefully not have to buy supermarket fruit any more 😊 thanks, have a great summer (I’ve also subscribed) 👍🏻

Hi Jack, I can't wait for homegrown strawberries this year, I have 48 plants so that's going to be a lot of homemade jam! Thanks for sharing :)
@JackShilley9 жыл бұрын
+Lavender and Leeks WOW! That is an impressive amount of strawberries! Lots and lots of jam I would have thought!

Thanks young man! Finding all info that I can about strawberry care. There are also very contradictory ideas about how and when to feed the plants - after they're in bloom, or before... I try not to overfeed so I just water them until they seem to run out of oomph.
@JackShilley6 жыл бұрын
Indeed there are many different methods, none are wrong or right necessarily! That’s what makes gardening so interesting, seeing how others grow 😊 For me, I use a good balanced feed early in the spring to get them going and then some Tomorite near/during flowering season.

Just a thought, checking the softness of the fruit through squeezing would lead to bruising, reducing it's shelf life, you would be better off smelling them since they give off aromatic compounds when fully ripe, which can be a handy tip for the white or orange varieties as well. Btw love your enthusiasm for plants! Good luck!

Hello Jack. A very useful video. My strawberry beds are a mass of runners and I was wondering why the strawberries themselves aren't growing too well. Now I know why - the energy is going to the runners! I'll be using my secateurs on Saturday morning. Thank you :)

really good advice - I thought my lack of crop was due to lack of sunlight but I have loads of runners! I'm off to get pruning :) thanks

Strawberries fruit during the summer, you can get early, mid and late flowering varieties to spread the crop out over a longer period of time - Hope that helps! Jack

Hi Jack, I'd like to ask for some advice from you. I just start growing a few strawberry plants on my own. They are growing okay. I'd like to ask for how many weeks or when appropriately should I snip the runners out of their mother plants? And there's one runner starting to grow another runner, should I let the 2nd runner grow or should I snip it out of the 1st runner? Thanks in advance :)
@JackShilley9 жыл бұрын
Hi There! Glad to hear your strawberry plants are growing ok! Have you had fruit from your strawberry plants yet? If you haven't, and want them to fruit well, remove the runners completely! Then the plants can focus their energy on producing flowers and fruit. If you have plenty of fruit from your plants and want more plants then leave the runners until they have established a decent root system themselves - then snip them off from the mother plant! I would personally remove any 2nd runners and just have the one! :) I hope this helps!!
@syravannyang81259 жыл бұрын
+Jack Shilley They haven't had fruit or even flower yet. So, I should remove runners first then. Thanks a lot for your advice. :)

Just a small request from the states jack, if you don't mind please; I don't read Celsius or metric so could you caption things like the temperature with the conversion? That would be awesome and would stop me wondering where the snow is at 30 degrees :p

Is it true Strawberries only fruit best up until their 3rd year ? Mine are in their 3rd year now.
@JackShilley7 жыл бұрын
Yes this is normally considered correct - whilst the plants will continue to grow the amount of fruit they produce will gradually start to decrease as the seasons progress. It would recommend taking runners from your plants now and potting them on to ensure you have new plants coming up! -Jack
@davidh92447 жыл бұрын

From growing up with strawberry farmers who farmed the past 200+ years, I've never seen a strawberry ripen AFTER it's been picked. Please explain.
@JackShilley8 жыл бұрын
+CheriByGrace Studies have recently shown that strawberries will indeed continue to ripen and colour up for a couple of days after picking - of course for the best flavour and display you would choose a strawberry fruit that is full and in colour right of the plant and eat straight away!
@adrianabonitaaziz73936 жыл бұрын
You are really good . But the runners I just stick them in the earth , and let them grow stronger , then I cut it off The mother plant . I don't mind having less fruits , if the plant is giving nice runners already with fruits on it . Thank you .
@JackShilley11 жыл бұрын
Not That I Am Aware Of. There are not really any other plants to my knowledge that would work with the above principles other than strawberries. It is always a good idea though to remove, Dead, Diseased & Damaged foliage at the earliest opportunity! Jack
