Glad I ran across this. I have berries that have been frozen for a year. I never wash them before I freeze them and am wondering if it would affect the quality of the jam if I washed then dried the berries before making this. As you know strawberries can have pesticides. Thanks in advance to anybody that could advise.

Hi. If you thaw your berries then wash, I feel all the juices are going to be washed away. (I am not an expert lol). I wonder if you wash them frozen and dry them if that would work? Maybe try a small amount and see how it goes. next time wash and dry before freezing. I usually freeze on a cookie sheet then place in a container. I hope this helps! 🙂

Do we need to defrost the Jam and how long will a bottle last after defrosting? 😊

This is a traditional jam. So it is not frozen. It is canned for long term storage. I use a steam canner. Properly canned it can last one year on a shelf. Once opened i would say it lasts at least 2-3 weeks. Probably more.

Can I use a sugar substitute in this? Will it set properly?

Hi! Great question. I have included a link below that describes how to make jams with sugar substitutes. In a nutshell you can buy a specific pectin that is made for sugar substitute. It recommends to follow the instruction inside the package. It does not say you can make it with frozen berries but maybe the instructions in the package will specify that information. nchfp.uga.edu/tips/summer/Lowsugar_JamsJelliesST.html
