I so enjoy watching your videos! Helpful and packed with information. I’ve been trying my hand at gardening in a greenhouse, and although I’m failing miserably at successful crops, I find that I’m very good at watching videos of others grow successful crops. Observing others grow what I cannot may very well be my hidden talent! Thanks for sharing!

BTW, I am really happy I found your videos...my first was about chitting potatoes...I didn't know where to find organic russet potatoes here in Nova Scotia , after listening to your video I thought, OHHH, I just bought some organic russet potatoes to eat... instead I put them aside in an upstairs bedroom... they are ready to plant now. Thank you for your great video...I wish I would have seeen this one about strawberries last year before I planted mine...but. mine are growing and blossoming I didn't cut off the runners so they are very close together,and hard to add mulch inbetween...I may just pluck out some smaller plants to make room..I don't know what my PH is,I must test it...I have soooo much to learn...thank you for your detailed ,easy listening videos.I subscribed first thing with the potatoe video since I was so happy for the info...have a great day and HAPPY gardening.

Hello, What size pots did you use? I used a 5 gallon Home Depot container and it seems very deep. Your pots didn’t seem as deep. Its seems the strawberries don’t need a large deep pot. Can you elaborate on ideal container size for strawberries 🍓? Thanks

For pot cultivation I strat by planting my runners into small pots ... perhaps 4-5in pots are fine, but perhaps a 6in pot if teh strawberry runner is quite large. These can be potted up as roots fill each pot, but for single plants a 6-8in pot is ideal. However, you could plant several strawberries into a larger pot, and sometimes I'll plant perhaps 3 well rooted strawberry plants into a 10-12in pot, so the strawberries hang down around teh edges as they develop and ripen. You will see commercial strawberry growers plant strawberries on a raised growing system (especially under cover) to make picking easier, and improve air circulation around the plants and fruits. Their planters are NOT very deep, so strawberries do not need very tall and deep containers of compost. Personally I think a very deep container is going to hold a lot of compost that isn't required ... the roots will never grow down deep into the lower layers. A standard plant pot perhaps 10-12in deep is going to be fine.

what can I do now, this year, I didn't add all that compost to my garden first...how to I keep mine going and keep them healthy from now on?
@Adams-Gardening-Guides

It’s much harder improving soil after things have been planted. Soil conditioning is an essential preparation job. During winter you could try mulching the strawberry bed by spreading some compost over the soil around them. This will gradually be taken down into the soil by worms.

my soil has peat in it with other stuff...you keep saying "peat free" so is it a bad thing there is peat in my mixture?
@Adams-Gardening-Guides
@Adams-Gardening-Guides 3 ай бұрын
A good question. My soil contains lots of clay so I add an organic compost to help improve its organic contant for organisms to feed on. If your soil is naturally peaty then you will need to treat it differently. However, if you are talking about adding extra organic material then I prefer to add a composted manure or peat-free compost that is made from composted green waste.

@@Adams-Gardening-Guides no my soils is quite sandy, I bought garden soil that a peat bog sells...Can you tell me why you don't like using peat in your mixture?

The sale of peat is now banned by our Government from 2024, and the addition of it to compost mixes sold has largely stopped. This addition will also be banned, and I think the current deadline is 2030. The ban is due to destruction of natural peatlands, so peat-free alternatives have now been available for a number of years, and are improving all the time. This ban is only here in the UK as far as I am aware, so as an environmentally conscious gardener I am keen to use peat-free alternatives.
