Hi Streaky because of your MEA-2 review I went ahead and bought the thing! Would you also recommend I buy an MLA-4 or could plug-ins do the job? (I also bought the Buzz Req ME custom mod as I couldn't choose between the MEA-2 and Buzz Req and in the end decided to get both, mainly because I wanted to get the Buzz and your review pushed me over the top to get MEA-2 as well for its famous mids).

Anders Janocha I used to be the same way but I love it now...as a starter just run through it hardly touching it red lights flickering now and again ratio 5, medium attack fast release...change the release to add more colour...that should get the ball rolling...I think I have done a vid on it before good luck it's a great sound when you crack it

One question I have for you is can you tell us what you feel makes the maselec mae 2 the ultimate mastering eq compared to its American rival the mastering version of the Manley massive passive? I would very much like to understand what makes the mea 2 a better tool than the massive passive. Thank you

Maximilian Riley this ask for the kind words, they are both good, The Manley is full of tubes so it's more for colour rather than clean precise eq. They actually work well together but the maselec is more of a work horse.

Excellent! Thank you. Do you maintain a similar position with regards to the comparison of the maselec compressor vs. the mastering version of the Manley Vari MU? I'd very much like to hear your opinion on this as I'm close to making some moves one these pieces of "kit" as you say in your videos - much better word than us States folk that regard all of it as simply "gear". Another one to have a look at is the Black Lion CH1 really nice high mids and top end , what's sort of db you cutting if you only go to around 2 on a boost ,and on slightly different note do you have a L2 in your roommates​,I've been searching for one,always liked the one in John's room

Ok great I'll check it out, yes we all have the hardware L2's they are still great if used lightly. If I cut ever it's only .5db

The Manley Massive Passive is an all tube passive mastering eq. It is similar in price $7000 Can (£3500) and is considered the holy grail of mastering eq. Is your unit an all tube passive eq? I would imagine that both units would be comparable in sound.

John Morris the maselec isn’t tube it’s just a very clean all round mastering eq, the Manley is a nice eq but really only good as an extra option to add some colour...holy grail is Sontec IMO due to rarity/sound.

Love to try one. I concur regarding the Sontecs, having been through two of them (although the 462 does have variable, switched shelving frequencies). They do go noisy.

Yeah diet is important too! Avoid super high carb lunches the sugar rushes cause wooly hearing and loss of cognitive focus. For a really high profile client it's probably best to start the day with a slow release GI food such as porridge, then go for a protein leaning lunch to carry you through without hearing sensitivity flapping up and down like a yoyo.

I have exactly the same problem!!! I am so torn (gearslutz do not help - they suggest Buzz Audio but this review is leaning me back towards MEA2) - when in doubt buy both?

They are pretty similar but I would side on the Maselec...but yes buy both then send the one back you don't want...

Hi Guys, Im considering a Manley Massive Passive, a Chandler Curve Bender and This as my main hardware EQ for my Studio. It will be used for Mastering but more often than not for tracking/Mix/Mixbuss duties! ANy Opinions, experience with one or more of these Eq's, or thoughts would be appriciated!

James Cassidy I’ve had or used all three...totally different beasts. The curve bender and Manley are for colour and the maselec is the workhorse...so get that and I think the man key has more use than the bender both are great but Manley is a better match as a second eq.

Okay. How do you think the Maselec is for tracking or addind "A SOUND''? Like it seems very useful for reductive EQ, Notching out problems, but how about for Boosting, can it beef stuff up nicely, and how does the Q work? I see it has a shelf or just 4 selectable Q's from wide to narrow is that how it works? Im just worried the Maselec wont a great tracking or ixing Eq and more of a Seek and Destroy EQ , or am I totally wrong?

Yeah get one it's a good work horse and more precise than the 8200...I like the Mass Pass I remember some freq around 840hz sounding good when I used to use it.
