The thing is that I do think we need something like this, not just because "rep is important," but there is a precedent for minority groups getting shafted by the industry. Dontnod spent a huge chunk just trying to get Remember Me made, and were turned down left and right by publishers for the sole reason of it having a female lead. When they finally got a publisher in Capcom, they were forced to remove their planned romantic subplot because and this what they actually said: "You can't have a dude like the player kiss another dude in the game. That would feel awkward." The game was denied publication based on unquestionable misogyny, and then was denied content because of both that AND heteronormativity. Someone actually involving themselves in game development who says, "No, cut that out" should be welcomed. However, I do agree that those people should still be held accountable when they fail in this goal.

The problem is that diversity is not improved by representation. Diversity is something that comes from building your world enough to make your cast different and feel like individual characters, and things like race, sexuality and gender identity can keep your world from feeling monotone. Making a gay character should feel like making any other character, not like going down a check list.

I think a need for diverse teams is important if you're writing a character whose identity is tied to their race. That's why Forspoken was such a disaster, because it was about a young black woman who struggled financially and...not a single writer for her was black. No one on the writing team knew how to properly craft her character because they lacked her real world experiences as a marginalized person. But when it's something like Suicide Squad, like "black guy who shoots stuff because Mindless Action Video Game" then it doesn't really matter.

The only time I’ve been convinced of “representation” being important for characters to be role models is in kids shows and cartoons, since kids are very impressionable and seeing only characters who don’t look like them or their friends can feel isolating. I’ve met enough real people who’ve had this experience to believe it. But in adult media? Do whatever you want, the world is complicated and so can your minority characters! Nothing needs to be clean cut or neatly show the whole experience of an identity, just a character who has that identity written well in whatever form that may be. Cause in the end, no matter how inoffensive your representation is, you’ll still make the bigots angry. So why even bother trying to sanitize it?

@@aechman67 They're a consulting firm that writes scripts and dialog for games. So if you don't like the script and dialog in a game, well, there sure is a noticeable pattern. What's wrong with having a Steam group listing games of a company you don't like? I'm asking. What is wrong with that? I expect the people at SBI to be fucking adults and not react to even the most mild criticism with "you need to lose your Steam account and all your purchases for daring to shine even a tiny light on us". And because Kindred drew attention to it the company got under even MORE scrutiny. Pure Streisand effect. And if you listen to how people at SBI talk they sound exactly like the condescending development team in the clip from The Boys I showed at the end.
