Video deals with a magazine article testing 4 different carburetors on the dyno and eventual test @ the racetrack. Questions are higher dyno power correlates to superior track performance?
Surprising results worthy of taking a look at what happened and why it happened.

Hello Ben, another great job on this video covering all the bases, this is where you come to get the truth and accurate information, i have alot of stories myself to share on track proven performance i plan to do videos on also, like my friends camaro two 650 carburetor with the choke towers on them on a unported tunnel ram car ran 7.70s at 170 mph in the quarter mile and everyone said he needed two dominator on this he said no i don't the two 650s are plenty for this combo , keep up the good work Ben always enjoy your stories and information 👍

Mr. Alameda you're so awesome! I learn a lot from you. Thank you for these vids. I wanted to know If using oil low in numbers so it will be lose and easy to move would be ideal for a mildly supercharged engine running on E-85 or Methanol? Thanks again for the Great Informative videos!
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 7 ай бұрын
Yes we run thin oils specially on methanol as the engine plugged in oil heater actually gets cooler (oil temp) when we start to run it. Heavy oils will sludge up and not circulate as much specially with cool fuel (yes, E85 is one) and best is thin oil so it also returns back to the sump faster.

That was important information, I ran into the jet extension issue myself! I always wondered why the Carter Thermo-Quad never caught on, seemed like a great idea. Also, do you think a secondary power valve is worth the trouble?
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 7 ай бұрын
I feel it is the versatility and easy access to tuning that makes it more user friendly for many racers. For ex. If you are lean on the back cylinders just do the back float bowls unlike the Quadrajet/ThermoQuad you got to take apart the top half and it becomes a hassle. The same thing with engines wherein the 427 SOHC made superior power but in between rounds was a nightmare to go over and the bottom end is not as strong as the Hemi Mopars so they won races but not for long! lol
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 7 ай бұрын
On the power valves I would run them on the secondaries specially for a street car to keep the plugs from fouling out specially with a healthy cam!

Ben, your videos are very endearing to me. I think one reason is that my hay day was before the internet. We had to absorb everything through books and magazines. One of your videos shows you side by side with Joe Sherman. Brought back great memories.... My grandpa special ordered a 1966 dodge coronet station wagon with a 383 4 barrel (I'm pretty sure AFB carter) and posi traction. He used to take it hunting in the mountains lol On a trip home once he raced a new corvette that was revving at him at three stoplights. He pulled the vette every time. Coincides perfectly with your concept here. Thanks

Bigger doesn't mean better, more peak hp isn't faster. Torque production, flatter curve with a higher average torque will always be faster than more hp. Hp is just an equation using torque at certian rpm
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 7 ай бұрын
Yes and no to your comments. Torque across the rpm range is great but when you have a very light car with a Lenco or LIberty, having those extra gears will let you build for high rpm hp, therefore you build the engines very differently looking for top end power more than anything. Gear ratios take care of the torque capability or lack thereof in this scenario. Whether you have a 2 speed powerglide vs. a 4 speed Liberty the approach would dramatically be different. In closing your comments are right on point in regards to torque over horsepower in a street/race applications short of all out racing in a light car.

If I am leaving the line with a 302/C4, stock converter, and 3.55 gear, is it best to hit it from idle? If so, would a vacuum secondary be an advantage? 600cfm? little carb for little car😝😆🧐
@benalamedaracing2765

There such a thing as "flashing" the converter and it helps flooring from idle! A vacuum secondary will work for a mild combination and usually exhibits strong off line response or power.

So would wide open throttle vacume be an indicator of cfm demand? The 650 had 5.5 and the others had in the 1.7 area. Is their an area of vacume that is generally best? Milling the choke horn off and other modifications may move the carburetor vacume in the wrong direction or in the right direction. Seems like the vacume signal may give a good indicator as to what cfm would run best at the track or street.
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 7 ай бұрын
I kind of doubt the validity of such a high vacuum readout and still make power! It is too much of a restriction and would have choked the engine. Thanks you asked and was waiting for the question when I posted it. I on my racecar strive to have a vacuum reading in high gear at the finish line of about .5 to no more than .8 inches. Then I know I am getting as much without having a restriction on my intake systems. However, sometimes when it is this much @ the top the mid range power is a little on the soft side. It is always getting something and paying somewhere down the line for gains therefore it is a give and take scenario.
@Hjfvvdst
@Hjfvvdst 7 ай бұрын
@benalamedaracing2765 yes, this is what I was asking for. I figured it is a trade off. I was looking for a bracket that usually works. I had a 408 that I built. Years ago. I had a quick fuel RT. 750. I was pulling about .4 at the top. 1/4 mile. I never tried a different carb. But listening to you it sure made me wonder if I left some on the table. Thanks a million for helping me understand.
