My headcanon is that somehow, Asura's Wrath is canon to Akuma's lore. And Akuma used Asura's name for his theme as a sign of respect to the only warrior able to keep up with him for that long at their strongest at the time.

It's been my hc since SFV that Akuma's fight with Asura is the reason why he seems to be taking significant leaps in power from SFV onwards to the point where it feels like he's surpassed Oni. Finding and fighting an actual equal has given him the understanding and drive to improve his craft, whereas before he was was stagnating with no opponent on his level to reveal weaknesses in his fighting style. Nobody ever got stronger without losing, or at least getting as good as you give in this case, after all.

also interesting that in the arcade mode Gouki says that his fate is to fall in some nameless field. In Asura wrath that was literally the end both he and asura were petrified in a field.
