I wish I could magically have gone to that festival! The spider lilies are absolutely gorgeous, and there are so many of them! The river is lovely, too. The food - oh my goodness! I wanted to try everything you tried this time, and I have to thank you for showing us the anko around the 7-minute mark, and again later on, too! Ha ha ha! It made me laugh so much, and I was applauding from here in my little apartment. Thank you for giving me such a wonderful day-brightener. You two are really fantastic. I am so grateful for your videos.

I visited Japan in the spring, and the sakura were beautiful. But I think I'd like to see these spider lily flowers next time, and a real Japanese autumn. (Autumn is my favourite season, hands down. It is always an explosion of fiery colours, and it means the heat of summer is over.) Thanks for the beautiful bonus footage!! Also, I've never had a chestnut... But I really want to try one. The chestnuts in the Pacific Northwest are almost all horse chestnuts, so they're poisonous and can't be eaten. They always look so good in movies and cooking shows, though!

Of note in this episode: -- I really, really like Satoshi's narration -- his voice is rather soothing, even though his accent is thick. I'm son of a 1st-gen Japanese immigrant in HI though, so the accent isn't as hard to understand as it may be for others. -- have loved umeboshi since childhood -- used to eat a whole bottle of the big ones in the video, by myself. :P One of the omiyage I brought back from my trip this past summer, was individually packaged, seedless umeboshi from Hokkaido. -- anko and miso are two of my favorite flavors in Japanese cuisine... though I'd never thought of them combined in a snack! Will have to try that combo out sometime... maybe oshiruko with mochi basted and grilled with miso? :) -- and finally... I've travelled quite a bit in my younger days... and there's something tangibly different about the beauty of nature in Japan. I have no idea why it's that way... but a riverbank in Germany or France or WA or AZ or TX or GA, just is *different* from in Japan. Being from Hokkaido I was glad to get two weeks filled with that mysterious yet obvious aspect of Japan. ;)

Aw! I had so much fun exploring the festival with you. I'm shocked about the self serve shop, that's a lot of community trust. The first thing I thought was that it would be so easy to steal from there....does that make me a bad person? =P I would never do it of course....
@offthesidelines
@offthesidelines 8 жыл бұрын
I've seen one or two small self served shops (or stands would be more accurate), they're usually temporary or seasonal and often not meant to make much profit to the "seller"; (one I remember was to raise money for some cause in exchange for some vegetarian baked goods). I live in a big city (Montreal) so I was both amazed by the sellers's trust and pleased at how anyone would was interested or even just curious handled the products with respect.
@plejade4125

May I ask, Memosne, because I'm curious about it: don't you have self-serve-shops where you life(don't know where)? It's just here in switzerland on the countryside it's very common and usual special in fall that the farmer sell their pumpkins next to the streets where you drive, and yes you're right so many do cheat but I think after all; even you spend a little money they earn more than selling it to markets. Don't worry you're not a bad person ;) Lovely greetings out to you ^^//
@Memosne
@Memosne 8 жыл бұрын
Of course! I've only seen one self serve shop for books (it was for charity) and I think the librarian was secretly watching from her post in the window. I live in the US! I lived in Boston (where I saw the self serve shops) and now I live in SF where I've never seen them. =)

Jade It was at some event?? Like little temporary markets and a small local fair? I can't remember when or where it was but I know I saw one stall that did so last year or earlier this year with some baked goods. So it wasn't a full on shop but more like a kiosk - or literally just a table with a baked stuff, some notes about what they were and the sale was for and a locked box with a slit to put money in. And I think some small bookstores might do something similar too.

I agree, it not only feel refreshing but healthy as well. I live in Dallas and I have to drive almost an hour to get some mediocre quality Japanese food. They always add something American to it, it's never 100% Japanese. I visited Tokyo twice and since then my life is not the same here in America. SAD
