In today's episode we dive deep into San Francisco with another street photography POV but this time we shoot a surveillance film called "Derev Pan 400". This film is from the good folks over at FPP and in this video I put it through it's paces to see how it could perform in a street environment. Hope you guys enjoyed the video, comment what you guys think of the film down below!

You can try but i think you'll be disappointed. Actually these surveillance films are often overrated at their box speed, their real sensibility is below 400 iso ; that's why they look so contrasty and slightly underexposed when used at box speed. I've tried 800 and 1600 iso with the Rollei Retro 400s (which is also an old aerian surveillance film), the result was pretty bad, nothing i would recommend. Terrible grain, poor shades of grey and almost no details in shadow areas. I used Rodinal, so i assume it wasn't the best option for that work, a basic D76 or XTOL soup would have been better. But when it's about pushing of 2 stops a b&w film, the classical Trix and HP5, or Delta and Tmax 400, are far superior choices IMO.

I really liked the harsh shadows and found the film quite interesting, I generally don't need to see every detail in the shadows. Sean Tucker is one of those youtube photographers who's not afraid of crushing blacks a lot and I just love his stuff. Also agree with your favorite pic.

I don't usually like major contrast but that crushed black look made that photo more surreal and isolated I really dug that. Seeing how more hazy greys were visible in other photographs I think this stock isn't too harsh it's just about avoiding lighting with both extremes of bright and dark. Sick video man!

I also got it at the paideia and finally developed it this weekend. At 1600 the grain is still fine and very contrasty I was using adox rodinal at 1+25....my usual dilution ratio and more grainy ration. It maybe my go to overcast...any low contrast situational film.

The film reminds me of the look of Rollei Retro 400s. Deep blacks and high contrast as well as a green-blue mask. I think that for such a tough negative you did quite well.

I loved how underexposed these images were. Really worked. And that blacked out background on the photo with the head in hands really suited the image. I’ll ask a question I posed previously, what is the scanner you use for scanning negatives? You had it in a previous video but I couldn’t make it out.

I like it! Sorta reminds me of the JCH street pan. Those old surveillance film stocks often have super high contrast. Would love to see it pushed to 1600. Also, if that was Hulk pissing, the T-Max 3200 is Thanos pissing. Hahaha :-)

Great video! I've been looking forward to this video for a while now. In regards to your exposure, I shoot SF regularly on HP5+ and I can recommend metering for shadows not the highlights. Ansel Adams' book "The Negative" really helped me out on visualizing exposure with the zone system. Once you study and practice it, it is an easy concept to grasp. There is a 4-5 stop difference between bright sunlight and those cast shadows. Since most of the city is covered in tall buildings you will lose 2-3 stops of information from the sunny 16 rule. Film wont crush the highlights, so you are free to compensate overexposure by many many stops. Film today is extremely flexible too. I've read that HCB often set his camera to f/8, 1/125s and never changed it... Anyway, Cheers. Keep up the good work. See you around ;)

If you were shooting sunny 16 and not adjusting when you shot in the shadows then yes some of your photos are underexposed in the shadows…but there’s nothing wrong with that if you like what it looks like. I agree you should get a couple more rolls of this film and test it using proper metered scenes. Peace

Good to see you back! I was starting to wonder if you'd run off to Lala Land or something. Great images on this run! i really like the high contrast of that film. I would guess the exposure latitude of that film is pretty narrow based on the resulting images. They look like they're properly exposed to me...just high contrast. #johngang

Looked pretty good .... Poor man's JCH maybe .... Along with metering it .... How about trying another roll through the Leica pushed to 1600 with a baseline metering of 1/1000 f16, just to have a little bit of built in overexposure.
