In todays video we take a look at the Up Close and Personal street photography style of Suzanne Stein. She explains her approaches, pet peeves, and how the current state of our country has affected what she does. This is part of my Dream Drift series, encouraging myself and those watching to Dream and pursue new things but never Drift so far that you forget who you are.

Had to comment as I'm watching .... I've been a street photographer for decades - carrying my camera everywhere, even when inconvenient - and I know the traits that make a good one. Note during the conversation at 8:07 where Stein silently raises her camera and does a shot of a passing pedestrian, then lowers it and continues listening. This is a natural street photographer; one who sees a photo as it's happening, and seamlessly incorporates capturing that moment into their life. If there's any one piece of advice any street photographer should take, it's to do as she did. Carry a camera everywhere and treat every moment as a potential image. Now back to the rest of the video. :-)

I'm sorry but it doesn't seem to me she is photographing anything. She seems to be checking something in her camera... she is always focused on the conversation: it seems more like a coincidence that someone was walking by before she checked her camera.

There was a fairly famous photographer that once said “once people are aware of the camera it becomes a different picture “. Sometimes you’re a participant and sometimes you’re an observer. A good street photographer will know when engage and know when to just take the photo.

I totally agree, if you’re photographing delicate situations as she is people who have lost almost everything except their dignity need your respect. That’s not the street photography I take so my whole philosophy is different if I want a portrait I always ask. I just came back from Argentina and took a Portrait of a man in a wheelchair begging outside a church it took me three days to get the shot with flash in daylight I wanted but I made sure he had food and water for three days.

Finally, a real photographer is seeing. Nowadays all we can get is a bunch of 'kids' who know nothing about photography, who had never read a single book about the craft and don't do anything else other than replicate tech specs about gear. One thing that made me love her is the fact that she is not trying to convince anyone about her beliefs. Looks like she is genuinely opening herself to what the art of photography conveys in her heart and mind. A true photographer.

One of the finest street photographers today; compassionate, inspired with a narrative. Drill down and you find nothing but integrity. Suzanne's work will last. I tried a project and I was met with ignorance and hostility. A guy came out of a shop to challenge me and I wasn't even considering that as a subject. Another guy in a shop exploded saying that I had no right. Back to Suzanne! Robin Witting, England

I remember back in 1997 when I was a photographer’s assistant and working for a Celebrity Photographer of Vogue magazine just for that weekend. We were at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC 25th anniversary sitting in this small waiting room full of well known celebrities. Suddenly Tom Selleck walks in surrounded by a herd of journalists, I was just sitting there watching. A paparazzi photographer comes running in trying desperately to get some shots of Tom Selleck and I could not believe how rude this photographer was. That’s when I realized that I didn’t want to be that kind of photographer. Like Susan said she was nervous to approach people when she was started out and now she has the confidence to approach respectfully 👍👍👍.

Take your time Philip, family comes first, business second:), and the rest will fall into place. Good content as usual. I gave the photographer for my civil marriage my xt-4 with the 18-55 and he shot most of my party with my Fuji cause he loved it (he shoots with a Nikon usually). Small party but the xt4 was so versatile and the colours are great. I even took some shots at my own party:)))...a settings video for weddings would be amazing...like filters, aprture settings for group photos and whatever tips you can give:). Kudos

Suzanne looks so comfortable and confident sitting there. I know what she means about sneaky photography. I started like that and got caught and I felt dreadful. But trying to see it from the point of view street photographers that use that technique. Maybe they don’t want to infringe on their subjects. The second that someone sees a lens, everything changes. That can work favourable if you have people skills which Suzanne clearly does. I love her work.

Initially, I thought this was going to be a photographer that was in the vein of Bruce Gilden or one that took advantage of those down on their luck in life, by taking images when they were unconscious but I’m happy to see that wasn’t the case (the image used on the video link looked like that but it was revealed in the video she was talking with the person first of all, which shows respect). Her asking for permission was good to see... I do street photography and am sometimes stricken with conscious whether I should take an image or not, even though it’s showing the world as it is in real life. I’d do have a few images of the side of life many would like to sweep under the carpet, but mostly I try to show the world in a positive way... this photographer has some really powerful images. Yes, and I too feel more noticeable now due to there being fewer people on the streets too... I was in Edinburgh yesterday doing street photography and I was more aware of being noticed taking images. Generally, a wave (they can’t see me smile to them behind my mask) helps though... Oh, isn’t it funny how people will be antagonistic at you for taking a photograph in the street meanwhile they are being filmed all the time on the street, inside buildings etc by the owners of the property and by local authorities...

As Suzanne says, theirs a fine line between sticking your camera in someone’s face or literally sticking it in their face as Bruce Gilden for one but there’s many more do, personally, I couldn’t do the latter. I shoot all sorts of Street Photography, candid, Street Portrait, documentary, with or without people, or even just a piece of Street Furniture or an old industrial piece that’s still on a building. Even just a street crossing button. I’ve just come across your channel and must say, I’m loving it, watching my third video in a row and it’s 1 am here in the U.K.

I find it ridiculous that she called her work art and others with different style, "that is not art"! Her work is great and I have been a follower of her art for a long time, powerful imagery! Regarding some of us being creepy because we shoot from heap, I should say she is representing Fujifilm and its XPro3 that obviously promoting that style! :) Looking forward to your next one! !

I did not say that styles of street shooting that differ from mine are not art. I said that shooting from the hip in a random, obtrusive and meaningless style is not art. That was my intention. Criticism is sometimes necessary especially in the age of social media when crass and intrusive street styles can exploit people in the WORST way and totally misrepresent the art form. Thanks for following me if you still do!
@Shmyrk

Man I agree with you big time. I’ve never seen a street photographer shame other photographers for shooting from “the hip” so to speak. Why would you intentionally draw attention to yourself, while hoping to capture candid moments?

@@suzy7187 no worry, I still follow your art, I love your pictures and work as I am still watching Roman Polanski's work! Being critical of others art is fine, go for it, but judging them, no, sorry!

@@streets28mm hey brother. Thank you so much for watching and the honesty in your comment. I believe from the video, context and the timeline is key. She said she doesn’t like the discrete shooting style but everyone’s got their views. I know Suzanne was trying to get people to see the negativity that can come from the incognito street approach. Also, when she said "they are not artists" she was speaking of people who take a photo they have been asked not to take, and I have to agree with that for sure. Yes we love what we do but it should never come at the cost of respecting someones wishes. Thanks for the support!

@@Shmyrk Hey brother. So to chime in, I know photographers who have different views on this, and I am friends with both. However, I have seen the negative effects of the shoot from the hip style. Reason being, it looks creepy. I don't sit on either side of that fence, something I def am still chewing on, but she made some really valid points. Especially in the climate we live in. Candids are fine and it happens, but I think if we are secure enough to take the photo, we should also be secure enough to let people see a photo was taken.

Samuel L. Streetlife(youtuber) is a great channel focused primarily on street photography. His playlist "ON THE STREET WITH" is similar to this but walking and talking with the photographer while they shoot. Def inspired me to get a camera and go for it, as well as this interview of course. Thanks Phil! Needed some inspiration 🙏

Agree with EVERY SINGLE thing you guys said Just now Suzanne said never hide All this "ninja" "stealth BS I followed Suzanne on social media for a long while Recently I deleted Instagram and tried to delete Facebook but I haven't gone there for a long while And the reason is that it's all full of ego lack of respect and exploitation. I was so surprised to come across this video Better lare than never lol Suzanne in my opinion is a truly gifted artist. And as you say a good human So much in this from the two of you Yes indeed these are very weird times

Hello from France ! I am not used to watch this kind of video because they are often boring and much… Thanks for this interview of Suzanne. I agree ( photgrapher too) 100% with her about the way of doing photographies. Her analysis of what should be documentary and street photography is so smart and respectful to get honestly a good picture collaborating with the subject. Great ! Thanks both of you. Hervé
