With its tidy 108-inch wheelbase, the 1969 Plymouth Valiant was shorter and lighter than the compact Dodge Dart, making Valiant 2-door sedans a favorite among 440 swappers looking for maximum go. That was then. Now, is this Slant Six relic worthy of salvation? Watch and discover!

Steve in the 1980s I lucked out and happened across a 1974 Oldsmobile Omega with a Rocket 350 in it right from the factory!! It already had a factory installed Rochester 4 barrel carb, and I swapped out the cam to a hotter camshaft and added a pair of headers!! I had a friend of mine massage the heads as well, to make them flow better also!! The car became a monster and I beat more than my share of brand new IROC Z28 Camaros and mid 1980s Trans Am Pontiacs in that car!!

When I see one of these cars, I think of the movie Dual with Dennis Weaver. He drove a 4 door Plymouth Valiant though. The body style is sort of the same. There aren't many Valiants around any longer due to the good old rust belt I live in.

David Mann's red Valiant had the V8 emblems. It would easily outrun the Peterbilt, but then the movie would be over in 5 minutes.

I bet your dentist wishes he had a VA in that car. I watch you again in a year ago Peterbilt was wicked looking to when I was a kid in first watched a movie. You know I like small blocks friend of mine at 318 and one for no particular reason as and that's what he had. He needs some transportation. We were 16 maybe. You know one thing Ford guys and a Chevy guys could agree upon you really had to be down on your left to drive a Mopar product of course back then we just call him Dodge Chrysler Plymouth. Well the first time I lined up against one and I actually saw his tail lights pulling away from me, had new respect. But when he crossed finish line he saw tail lights of my old Chevy truck. I kid you not he asked me what I had and I told nothing it's just an old farm truck. I tell that to the police when I get pulled over quite frequently. I hear some other guys making a lot of money off of them t-shirts. Go figure that was back in 1982 ish. Always did want barracuda and cuda parrot wouldn't mind having a Challenger. Got an old Coronet and a charger. Just picked them up and they were cheap 30 years ago. So it's nice to see these cars too bad that people aren't coming in behind them and fixing them. But at least the parts are there to fix others

One night in 1977, at a curb service diner named Jimmy Paul's, the huge local street racing crowd was gathered. Way off in the distance we heard a hell of a car coming. Rumor had it that the quickest car in the mountains was coming down to the valley looking to run our baddest car. Into the parking lot pulls a 1962 four-door Dodge Lancer with no hood, open headers and monster slicks. In the engine bay set a 440 with a huge tunnel ram and two fours. It ended up that the thing was so wicked intimidating that nobody would race them. Those crazy guys from the mountains loved their push-button shifters!

My parents had a 1967 Valiant Signet. The thing that I remember about it was that the 13 inch wheels would wear out the tires much quicker. Back then all you had was bias ply tires. My very first car was a 1971 Plymouth Scamp which was a budget version of the Valiant. It was a very basic car. One interesting thing on these cars were the air vents. While higher model cars would have a cable operated vent located hear the kick panel under the dash, the 'A' body cars just had a little door under the dash that you would open for the vent. With this setup you could easily stash a '6 pack' in the vents and the air flow would keep it cool for you.

@A - EH ! I remember when I first got my Scamp. I bought it used for $1900 in 1975. When I first got it home I was cleaning it. While using my shop vac behind the brake pedal I noticed the button just above the dimmer switch. I was 16 at the time. I had no idea what it was for. I turned the key on and pressed it with my hand a bunch of times but nothing seemed to happen. When I got out from under the dash I noticed that the windshield was all wet and figured it out. 🙂

Would love to see a "MOPAR JEOPARDY" with Mark Worman, Tony D'Agostino and Steve Magnante. Worman did this with Tony on one of the episodes of Graveyard Cars, but you really need three contestants to make it a match. You could get Galen Govier to write up the "answers" for the quiz, since he is the undisputed MOPAR MAESTRO. Maybe Nick Panaritis from Nick's Garage, or Tony DeFeo from Uncle Tony's Garage, or David Fryberger and Steve Dulcich from Road Kill could also be contestants in a MOPAR JEOPARDY Championship tournament. I think this could crown the ultimate MOPAR NERD. You could put it on KZbin and raise money for charity like Celebrity Jeopardy. Maybe Dodge could sponser it and have the tournament at SEMA. Just a thought. I think it could be a lot of fun...and raise some money for charity. Maybe Jay Leno could be the host...he would add a bit of humor to the whole thing. If you use this Idea, I want a free ticket to SEMA for a week...you heard it here first.

That’s exactly what I built in the mid 70’s, a 69 2dr sedan Valiant. Mine was the 225 with the automatic. I intended to go the 340 route, but plans changed. I swapped in a 4 speed, and all the springs and brakes from the 340, but kept the six, with headers and 4 barrel. With the 2.66 first gear, I had to go to 3.91 ring and pinion. It was a fun daily driver and I got lots of street light action from imports of the era, oh how I beat that car! The clutch was the weak link in the combo, just a stock 9 1/4” as I remember.

I worked with a guy in the early 80's in Dearborn MI named Ken and he built one just like Steve suggested. Big block, fenderwell headers, hemi 4 speed trans and 8 3/4 rear end. Set up the spings, shocks and torsion bars and with slicks it was gonna pull the front wheels next when he got it hooked up and dialed in. Unfortunately he got MS and never quite finished it and couldn't race it. Somebody ended up with a really quick Valient later on I suppose.

Man oh Man im seeing so much sheetmetal used in the Aussie A bodies, even the Dash, door cards etc and that engine bay is identical to the Aussie made A bodies. Part of what made the Aussie Valiant king of the road downunder I believe was the design and Chrysler Australia's use of the US parts bins from all the Mopar brands. Helluva Education here, Love it!

The thing about the '67 and later Valiant/Dart was it was essentially an E body under the skin. That's the 'Cuda/Challenger which offered the B and RB Big Block wedge. Chrysler even ran off a small number of Hemi Darts strictly for racing. Oh, and Hot Rod Magazine built a 440 Dart they called "Cheap Thrills."

Hi steve love your vids!!!! I know we're looking at a mopar, but I'm a74 yr old gearhead, I just wanted to share a thought I've had since '67. When the '67 mustang denied I was saddened because of how much it had grown. I was of course a minority of one. I thought they made a mistake, and i have predicted that Ford ruined their pony car. I therefore was not surprised when Ford dropped the monster stangs in '74. I was however, disappointed that they used a rehashed pinto and called it a mustang. If hoped they'd have redesigned the mustang, made it a true pony car. I lost interest in the car all together. I bought only used '65, '66 mustangs. I changed engines in mine, a 302, and several '351 Windsor v8 in my cars. 4-speed granny and they would romp. I kept one robins egg blue '66 for my daily driver, for years.

The most important factor to consider is whether this boneyard Valiant still has a title somewhere. It is probably the most single deciding factor on whether this car gets pulled out and eventually put back on the road, or remains mired in the mud where it sits. Or option 3, built for the quarter mile only if no title exists.

I had a 69 valiant was working on mini tubs and had a 440 solid mounted in the front. Then someone decided they wanted it alot more than me. Was a great build.

I would say that the slant six in that car will be around long after the rest of the car has turned to rust and dust.

If I won the lottery tomorrow I would call up Steve and ask him to roam the Junkyards with me to buy up a bunch of rusty gems. I'd pay him of course. He knows what's worth buying and what's not. And who would be more fun to roam Junkyards with than Steve Mags!

Back in the 70's my Dad nicknamed the Darts and Valiants " Darvs". And the people that owned them would pull some of the most unpredictable and dangerous moves you could ever imagine. We always eyed them with caution.

Steve, the wheel cover that you made mention of at the top of this piece is for the 1969 Plymouth Valiant, not the Dodge Dart as you stated. Yes, I know the Valiant and the Dart were virtual twins under the skin, but you did make the distinction that they rode on different sized wheelbases, and their bodies were unique to their respective brands of Plymouth, and Dodge.

In Mexico the Signet name wasn't used. Mexico used the name Acapulco in place of it. The 1965 Acapulco valiant could be had with the Barracuda front end treatment. It really dresses up the Valiant.

I've had a few Darts and Valiants, but after watching the movie "Duel" starring Dennis Weaver, where a possessed evil truck chases him while driving his '71 Valiant, I opted for more durable vehicles ever after.

Just make sure you have quality radiator hoses and you will be fine. A burst upper hose is what crippled Weaver's Valiant. And even a 273 V8 should outrun an old Peterbilt or Kenworth.

In the movie "DUEL" the temperature light flashed, I attribute that to Hollywood effects. Did the temp light flash on these cars, or did Hollywood add a flasher to it?
@bertgrau3934
@bertgrau3934 2 жыл бұрын
@@norcal715 I think Hollywood added a flasher, and at the very end when the car went up in flames, that was probably Hollywood as well. I have seen a lot of crashes, and not many cars would go up in flames. Possible, because it got hit in front, a fuel line could have broke and sprayed gas on the hot exhaust

I always got a spooky ghost chill when the scene closed with the big rig Peterbilt's front tire slowly turning and the electric fan in the cab still running......Also, for the most part the driver of the Pete wasn't shown...as if the truck was demonic. One heck of a movie. I also recall that Dennis Weaver's Valiant had those small discrete V-Eight front fender emblems. Sooooo, it really should have been able to quickly outdistance the evil big rig so O'l Denny could reach the next pay phone (remember those?) and call the fuzz. but again, Hollywood never let reality get in the way of a good story! Thanks for writing, Steve Magnante

Wouldn't a special "K" member be required for a 440 installation? Plymouth was offering the Barracuda, GTX, and Roadrunner at the time, so I am not surprised that they didn't offer a high peformance Valiant. Also, isn't this like the one that Dennis Weaver drove in "Duel?" This would be a cool car even with a 273.

The Valiant that Mopar Action built up with mother mopar running gear for the one lap deserves mention as they kicked some high dollar exotic machine a## all over the country. Their driver wan't too shabby either. The car really didn't get alot of mention since it was just a Valiant that was doing all the kicking and those exotic boys couldn't stand it.
