Streetcars/Tram of Toronto 2023

The Toronto streetcar system is a network of ten streetcar routes in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). It is the third busiest light-rail system in North America. The network is concentrated primarily in Downtown Toronto and in proximity to the city's waterfront. Much of the streetcar route network dates from the 19th century. Three streetcar routes operate in their own right-of-way, one in a partial right-of-way, and six operate on street trackage shared with vehicular traffic with streetcars stopping on demand at frequent stops like buses. Since 2019, the network has used low-floor streetcars, making it fully accessible.
Toronto's streetcars provide most of the downtown core's surface transit service. Four of the TTC's five most heavily used surface routes are streetcar routes. In 2022, the system had a ridership of 60,260,000, or about 201,200 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2023. ~Wikipedia

Awesome Video, Tim; brings back a lot of memories of the old Rockets. Question: Does anyone know why there is a single pole on the rear car? Is this a backup for the pantograph in the centre?

The old streetcars used the poles instead of pantographs, and these ones had to use the poles for a bit while the overhead wires were transitioned to pantograph

@@maddoxmagennis1520 Yes, and there are some very limited sections of overhead wiring which still require the usage of the trolley pole instead of the pantograph :)

Thanks for this video, Tim! I've visited Toronto and did a bit of streetcar riding, but this was before this new equipment was there. I notice that there are trolley poles on the rear of each set, unlike most new tram designs. Are there places where the overhead has not yet been converted to pantographs, or was this for compatibiltiy during a system changeover? Cheers from Wisconsin!

Yes the system is still in the process of conversion to pantograph. The pole remains for system wide compatibility by all cars.

​@@billtalbotThe system was already converted to panto for over a year. The reason why there's trolley poles is due to Russell Carhouse not being equipped to store streetcars in Pantograph form.
