freestyle has meant improvisational since, oh, 1985ish, or maybe even earlier....in the last few years, the you tube era, people label any verse that isnt in a proper song, a freestyle. This was originally done to garner the accolade that is sure to come from spitting something written within the context of it possibly being off the head. Mcs with integrity used to be sure to tell you if they were spitting something written in a cypher, to avoid being called out for the shit. Now mother fuckers just accept this new definition of "freestyle", even though it still brings undue accolade, or at least confusion. I usually find the people who use "freestyle" in this new way to be under 25, or new to hip hop.

Robert Shelburg it's interesting.. freestyle originally meant just random writtens thrown together with no continous theme or topic... just whatever comes to mind you can write, you're free to bounce around ideas all you want. Then the definition slowly changed into meaning off the top improvisation. Because when people would try and improv, the easiest way to do it is to just let your mind wander and bounce around freely. So off the top freestyle actually has origins in written freestyle. But nowa days, in the last few years, freestyle is starting to return back to mean "random, free flowing writtens". I think this happened because 1.) old school people are using the old school freestyle term (random writtens), 2.) new school people claiming they are freestyling (imrpov) to gain cred and respecting when really it's writtens, 3.) and DJs/video uploaders were calling it freestyle as click bait. Now it's not really click bait or MCs lying anymore since we're mostly back to using freestyle in the old school meaning. But people who don't know the history are definitely going to be confused lol
