I'm a real Sega fan (old Sega) and i certainly don't want this. How about learning from history?? Why are so many so-called Sega "fans" still incapable of this after decades of failures? History tells us that the chances of these games being poor is very high, so as a real Sega fan i don't want to see more franchises ruined. Sega wont even be making them i bet. And common sense should tell you that SoR in 3D is even less likely to work.

Cool to see these series coming back, but SEGA probably shouldve started Golden Axe out with a 2D game to get thier feet wet again. Establish shit again a little more, then maybe get more experimental. With SOR4 they atleast had a very strong 2D revival. If they fuck up the 3D version there might be some room to bring it back with a 2D SOR6. Its going to be hard to match that pacing and flow of such a tight 2D game in 3D. It can be done but its a huge undertaking. Its also hard to make it feel like an SOR game at that point. I could see a behind the back style like God Hand working better for a 3D SOR.

That's too bad. Its tough these days since it takes so much more than a high quality game to be profitable. The masses often buy into alot of bullshit games, so that can overshadow the better games. I definately get the sense that SEGA is not the same company anymore. Theyve made some strange decisions in the past, so Im more confident that Golden Axe and SOR will be more like GA and SOR flavored games with completely different gameplay, likely worse than the originals. At best they will retain some of the themes but I dont have high expectations for GA or SOR in 3D, from them. Shinobi looks more promising. Crazy Taxi was a fun game for a little while when I got it on the DC, but I never got hardcore into the scoring so it didnt give me a ton of replay. Not a series Im that interested in but will check them all out. I will play through a mediocre game out of curiosity, but only pay 40 + if the games look top tier. @@ironhell813

Splatterhouse for PS3 was a pretty good attempt, but I kind of have mixed feelings about some of the environments. Seeing what happened with the third level was pretty interesting as showed the stakes were way higher than they're in the original, but at the same time, it might have been better to explore the mansion a bit more over the carnival.

I agree Sonic's not been in the best spot, but the people doing those games clearly aren't the same ones doing these ones. I'm personally not on the ''all classic remakes should be 2d''...If done right jumping to 3d is the better option as sometimes adhering to the 2d style limits replay/exploration/ and can sometimes feel dated, sometimes. Of course the operative term is ''if done right''...the Mario galaxy games is prime example

could be rentals, could be emulation's prominence, either way this is just a common advertising tactic, get young looking people to advertise your stuff so it sells more outside of the small circles that still enjoy these decade old albeit timeless franchises, maybe it's because I've been far too jaded for far too long but i really do hope these titles succeed in living up to their predecessors, making for new timeless classics for us all to enjoy decades down the line much like their predecessors, maybe I'm being too optimistic, for better or worse only time will tell

Current culture has children raised on technology, current culture has single-parent homes and/or the worst parents from the results of how the current and previous generation have turned out. All one has to do is look of every metric of how the last decade or two has varied from the past in negative ways, primarily how attentions pans overall have dropped due to consumption of rapid information absorption and 200% or more in autism. The larger audience game companies and entertainment in general go for are those online or get their information from social media. They aren't targeting the older gen of gamers or their methods of PR and research/marketing would be different. You don't go for who is getting older, less malleable; you go for the new crop you can employ psychological tactics to far greater effectiveness. That's how you know. The "standard" should be understood just on the face of it, it's that obvious and been that way.

Curious to see what happens with Golden Axe. While I would have much rather had a 2d game in a similar vein to SoR4, I do feel Beast Rider could have been interesting if it wasn't for all the behind-the-scenes stupids and the lack of two-player. Whatever happens I expect I will use it as an excuse for a few more GA miniature attempts.

I am of the same opinion and for instance Capcom's monster hunter trailer that showed awesome beast riding gameplay (running away fast from a sandstorm, hoovering, jumping from mountain to mountain) is a great proof of concept. It is what I was expecting from beast rider.

Just because it has never been done right doesn't mean it can't be done right at all. Adopting 3D graphics was certainly the right move, there's nothing sprites can't do polygons can't do better these days, given the approriate budget. With some talent and a little imagination, I'm sure they could come up with gameplay that feels like a proper 3D evolution of the established 2D formula. SoR4 was a big success for Sega and it has shown there's demand for more. The IP is valuable once again and I doubt they will half ass Revolution.

I'm in my 40s and when i saw the ad, I couldn't understand how such young people would be so excited to play new versions of games released when they weren't even born. Nintendo really understands their audience much better than nowadays Sega, including how a "normal" family house would look like (no stupid RGB lighting).Nintendoes what Sega don't, unfortunately. I only hope they end up making good games, since I liked Sonic Mania and SOR4 very much.

I'm not against 3D per se, even if with the detail and realism of modern hardware characters looks always too "real" and photorealistic instead of cartoonish like they used in the past. I still don't understand why they have to turn a game that worked perfectly as a 2.5D beat em up into a full third person 3D brawler. Why not just do Golden Axe with a 3D engine but 2.5D gameplay?

I’d guess a 3D Streets of Rage would play more some kind of cross between Sega’s own late ‘90s 3D beat ‘em up Spikeout: Digital Battle Online, and Def Jam Fight for New York and Urban Reign. I really don’t think it will play anything like Bayonetta or DMC outside of maybe having some DMC style combos.

Nintendo solved that nicely with their Mario vs Donkey Kong revival. Having cartoonish characters makes the 3D transition easier in terms of looks of course. It's the looks that kept me from shilling out anything for Streets of Rage 4. It doesn't look like a SoR title. It looks more like an LSD fuelled Comix Zone sequel. I also think an updated Shinobi should follow the Saturn version in terms of a graphical leap. It was never a children's cartoon. It had a rather serious storyline even.

I played a ton of SOR4 and even got my wife into it. It was the perfect relaunch of the franchise. Great Music Great Gameplay Great Visual Style. Critics loved it, Players loved it, I loved it and i think it was a financial success too. I just hope this 3d trailer is a fever dream and the real SOR5 will be made by DOTEMU in the style of SOR4.

SoR4 was an amazing title made by people who clearly loved the original games (my only real complaint being that I wish there was some sort of defensive mechanic). As an OG Crazy Taxi fan I must say... The game got very deep with all of the mini games and provided so many hours of fun for my friends and family. If they could put modern graphics on the original game and expand the city a bit, I'll be happy. My friends are also excited for it and were hyped by this video. It's nice to hear a much more negative tone as we were only optimistic assuming they'd knock it out of the park.

So much I disagree with in this video Crazy Taxi is like any arcade style title. Once it's been done why do you need another Streets of Rage/OutRun/Golden Axe/After Burner etc etc. They're fun games and revisiting them is fun. Shenmue 3 was great Jet Set Radio was great Golden Axe 3 was bad Streets of Rage 3, while not bad wasn't great 3D fighting games are great. Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors are basically scrolling beat'em ups in 3D. They're fun and they sell well These are all hills I'm willing to die on

I like how Street Fighter when they decided to go 3D had a new name EX. I understand they want to branch out but your right they don't have the best track record of doing new things. They should have named it something slightly different that way if it is no good than it really doesn't ruin much. Same with Golden Axe but they should at least come out with a good side scrolling beat em up first for that franchise. I'm excited for Shinobi but Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio, come on. Why not a new Shining Force in the original tactical RPG style, Beyond Oasis, Dragon Force, Sega Rally , or Daytona. This being said, who is making these games? I thought the reason SoR4 was so good was because it was actually made by DotEmu, Lizardcube, Guard Crush, and Seaven Studio and only published by Sega.

I think all of these concerns are founded legitimately. Sega has proven to have a spotty track record outside of the Yakuza and Persona franchise's, which I'm sure neither development teams are working on these games. That being said, I am confident that JSR and Shinobi will be solid games because they are remaining true to their origins. I think Crazy Taxi has some potential with multiplayer mayhem in the mix. I don't think the comparison to GTA is fair, because the game encourages you to be on foot as much as possible. Yes, it does racing and obstacle courses as well, but those sections of the game are limited and not entire environments dedicated to it. I think if you make Crazy Taxi an arcadey multiplayer with different mini-game modes it could be a massive success. Just the cops chasing the taxis around gives me hope for some multiplayer mode where we have to catch other drivers while they make their runs. And you could come up with a number of other ideas for mini-games for multiplayer. Golden Axe and SoR do have me worried as they aren't true to their original styles, but I have to say that the detail is there and that gives me some hope. I honestly am grateful just to be getting more entries from these properties so they aren't completely dead like Nintendo has let happen with a ton of their properties. If the games are bad, maybe it prompts an indie dev to make a better version of the original just under a different brand, like Bomb Rush Cyberfunk 😅

A little TOO focused on the bad games are we? Shinobi 3D, the last one they made, graphics aside, was phenomenal. Streets of Rage 4, fantastic. Sonic Mania? The classic Sonic revival? Spectacular (and to y'all naysayers, Superstars was also amazing) All of these easily Top 3 material in their respective series. Don't want to sound over optimistic, but in my book they've earned the benefit of the doubt. (I also find it in poor taste to use the scrapped games that they shared, FOR FUN, against them)

I'm going to play devil's advocate for a second and say that it's at least understandable why Sega is going the route they are with the Golden Axe and Streets of Rage. While fans would certainly be thrilled with just more side scrolling beat-em-ups, the developers might see this as just adding basic improvements to the original which can feel creatively stagnant for the people making it and would limit the possible audience to just fans of the original games. By taking these new routes with them they can try and find a way to take the basics elements of the games and make them in the style they would be if they first released today instead of back in the 80s and 90s, similar to how Doom 2016 took the basics of the original Doom game and updated it to be more in line with modern sensibilities.

Sega didn't make Shenmue 3. It was funded by a Kickstarter campaign plus some external investment. I'm sure if Sega had thrown more money at it, it would've been better, that said, I still enjoyed it for what it was. Hopefully Sega get back in the game from Shemnue 4 or the rumoured Shenmue Zero.

For me, Streets of Rage 2 is still the definitive 2D, side-scrolling, arcade beat 'em up. A lot of these video game companies seem to think that slapping polygons on a game and making it 3D is sufficient enough, but most of the time they fail to take the Nostalgia Factor into account. There was nothing quite like heading into the local Arcade and dropping a few quid into the slot of the greats like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Street Fighter 2....Hell, even the bargain bin 10p a-go games like New Zealand Story and Bubble Bobble were hours of fun at the Arcade! As good as 3D Golden Axe and Streets of Rage 5 look in the preview, will the gameplay be as simple as it was when they were 2D side-scrollers? Nobody wants to have to key-map or create a Macro for something that should be as simple as walk up, down, left, right, jump, mash the button to attack! I remember the original arcade Golden Axe only had 2 buttons - one for attack and one for special! (sigh) Maybe I'm just getting old, but I liked it when games were easy to pick up, hard to put down, and just FUN.

@@fleed78 Ah, good point. I forgot the arcade cabinets had a separate jump button. I also used to play it on the Atari ST (rubbish conversion!) and everything was done with one single button ; up and fire to jump and space bar for special.

Good to know I wasn't the only one worried about Streets of Rage 5, assuming this IS a sequel and not some dumbass attempt at some reboot bullshit.. Every other announced game can sink into the septic tank, but please let it be a SoR5 AND actually good!

After Lizard Cube/Dotemu single handedly resurrected the Streets of Rage franchise after thrity years of nothing from Sega, it worries me that Sega now have a real possibility of killing the franchise off again with Streets of Rage 5.

SOR4 is one of my all time fav games, me and my housemate still fire it up once or twice a week to do a round or two of Survival, one of the most rewarding games for mastering the characters moves I know of, at least in beat-em-up form. SOR5 looked pretty weak on the trailers, also not a fan of the shift to 3D rendered graphics, never seems to have the same feel as sprite or drawn characters, the weight and physics always feels kinda off.
