Some good advice here, though I'd like to add a few points that you may want to consider. Just a bit of background info just to start off. Our brand started up about 10 years ago, with just a few samples of raw jeans, traveling from store to store trying to make connections, to starting our own factory and recently purchasing a new factory just to keep up with production. When it comes to manufacturing we handle everything from fabric development all the way to retail and everything in between. So if you have any questions please feel free to ask, I'm always happy to engage with the community. Under producing to drive demand. This could be a big mistake and an even bigger missed opportunity. At our very first trade show in 2009 we were lucky enough to be introduced to the buyers at Barneys New York. They were impressed with with us and asked us to come back to New York for a private meeting. We came back a few weeks later and they gave us a purchase order right away. Had we not filled that order completely, they would have thought we were a bunch of amateurs, likely ending our story right there. Nothing angers shops more than under shipping them goods that they ordered. Shops have budgets allocated to your brand, they expect to make a certain return on that investment. If you don't ship complete, that means those dollars that they tied up in your brand won't get spent on another brand for them to make money with. Buyers do not like this, they are often paid on performance (mostly applies to large retailers). If the brand they buy doesn't ship enough stock for them to make their quota with.. They don't make their bonus. Back to our encounter with Barneys.. We shipped them complete, they sold though in 2 weeks and placed another order for immediate delivery.. We didn't have the goods, so we flew fabric in from Japan (luckily our supplier had stock) and we produced another batch, low and behold we sold out once again. Soon after that we became a staple of their denim department for years to come. It's more impressive to buyers when your brand sells out when they have the optimal amount of stock. Selling 3 t shirts isn't so hard, selling 300 is.

+Naked & Famous Denim I know all about you guys! Haha. Well not all but I love the work. You're much more advanced than I in that area so everything you mentioned? Spot on. I should have driven the point home that it was more in the area of direct sales through your own site or b&m location when it comes to small scale production. However, you are very correct, dealing with buyers are a completely different beast and I should have made that clear. I'll attempt to cover that very issue in the next episode.

You may also want to explore the difference between producing cut and sew garments vs screen printing on finished goods. When it comes to small scale production, it's much more difficult to produce cut and sew. For the few factories that will produce something with very small minimums, you can expect production costs to be quite high. Which will unnecessarily drive your prices up. If your small production bomber jacket is priced as if it's a Gucci, you may be in for a rough ride. Just because your product is expensive, doesn't make it good or luxury. I see time and time again, small brands producing garments priced as if they are in the luxury category, when much of the price is the result of inefficient production. You'll have more success with a cut & sew label if you're able to produce samples, take those samples to shops, distributors or trade shows and sell to stores (and your own direct channel as well) collect orders, and produce garments based on your orders, that way you can bulk produce and get a better production cost. After that you're in the business of being in business, delivering goods on time, processing payments, credit terms and factors, customer service.. etc., but that's another episode I guess. -Bahzad

Little thing to add. Typically in streetwear the concern of most up and coming brands is to remain as independent as possible. Of course you already know this. So most of the advice in these series are from that standpoint. Most people who start streetwear brands in particular never have the chance to go to a trade show and most of their inspiration comes from the individuals who sold shirts and garments out the back of their trunk a la Jeff Staple, or independently a la Jerry Lorenzo. In the long run, yes of course, trade shows, fulfilling product, etc are all important elements but from the standpoint of these videos the process of STARTING is often most difficult. Delivering the nuts and bolts at this stage of the learning process is probably better in a class setting with much more info being dolled out. Our goal at The Casual is to plant the seed and encourage people to research for themselves. Admittedly, I reckon you are far more qualified to speak on this than any of us are, you're the one with the label so there's that. I imagine when you see a video such as this missing pertinent info it makes you shake your head in disappointment. I apologize for that. It is certainly not intended. However, as far as "teaching" is concerned one of the best methods is one that eases the would be student into the process and paves the way for qualitative research, the nuts and bolts if you will. a great video just a few encouraging words of caution. When making things on your own you need to be able to rebuy or replace the fabric and trims you use. Meaning if you make a sample for costing or to show, you have to know where to get that same fabric for a big order. Don't just think about the one piece if you're going to show it or sell it. You have to have some kind of resource to make the same or similar product for more customers. Do you know where to get more? who made it? what's the content? A tech pack is for One Piece. Each piece in your line should have a separate tech pack. All the details down to fabric content, stitching, printing technique and even how to finish the garment even labels should be in the tech pack. Every detail is needed when you are working with manufactures or you will not get EXACTLY what you want and will have to make more samples until you/they get it right. That can be costly. For bulk order of the same fabric, you can probably go around the wholesale shops of fabric and ask them for quantities and time can give them for them to place the order further with the fabric factory/mill. Or best you can also take fabric supplier reference from the manufacturer you select, they usually will give you trusted contacts, in this case, you need to be a little flexible about the material and pick up the closest one he has. if you're short of time.

I learned to screen print. It’s a real skill to replicate professional standard. It’s also messy and requires a lot of space. Professional screen printers are not very expensive so I switched to them

In today's market I want to create a brand that's affordable and accessible for kids that can't afford expensive pieces like Supreme, or Bape, or ASSC, etc. So what's lowest you can price your items?

Quite honestly, you can have them at any price you want as long as there's a profit margin. Of course, with lower costs likely means the materials won't be the best, but you can market it more towards your audience. You've probably figured that out by now.

My advice regarding the t-shirts would be to cut a good cut t-shirt. Most people could do screen printing. They should put their more of their efforts into learning to draw, designing fonts, and working on looks that incorporate the whole look (cut, colour and design). If you can't draw, then you shouldn't be designing - none of that architect-slash-designer shit. Class time over.
