sir i have a doubt ....multiplication of tan(2 theta ) for for location of principal plane and tan( 2 theta ) for the location of maximum shear stress is -1. this means that principle plane ( zero shear stress ) and maximum shear stress plane are at 90 degree to each other. how is this possible sir?

Suppose if the shear stress is in horizontal plane in clockwise direction and it is given in the question diagram So at that time anticlockwise shear stress will be acting on the vertical plane So should we take negative sign of shear stress as sign convention since the formula for calculation of shear stress is based on vertical plane as reference?? Sir clarify this thing
@shamimraja98154 жыл бұрын
forget about horizontal or vertical plane...on a given state of complex stress if shear stress is in clockwise direction then it has to be taken as positive and if anti clockwise direction then negative

Same here ,By using his conventions solution is just opposite..Like if Tau is +ve , then by using his convention it is -ve

In my book formula is same only difference is theta in anticlock is taken as +ve and tau is taken +ve if it produces anticlock rotation
