I’m 61, riding 12,000 miles and 20-30 time trials per year . I’m also a USAC level 1 coach and ACE certified trainer. I lift twice per week year round. I usually lift on the same day I do intervals. If I want my bike intervals to be the focus, I do those first. The strength training may even come 6+ hours later. I teach strength classes and we do a lot of plyometrics along with the lunges, squats, core, etc. We use nothing but free weights. I can easily burn 500-600 calories in an hour and my HR will spend time in zone 4. I lift to correct imbalances caused by cycling and so that I can enjoy other activities like hiking, trail maintenance, etc. Too much of any one thing is usually not good. I’ll mention also that I haven’t gained weight from the lifting. I’ve simply switched some fat to muscle. I still maintain 10% body fat. Great interview! I really enjoy your channel.

Great podcast Anthony. As a 51 year old racing cyclist i KNOW i need to include strength training into my week. Even after listening i still scratch my head wondering how i could actually do it. The mental barrier to reducing volume on the bike to add another discipline is super hard!

Great episdoe! Love what Derek Teel does. The last few months I've incorporated some of his kettebell routines a few times a week. This strength training has really helped my cycling and works in well with my 80/20 training.

Lol... DOM'a... sitting here at my desk sore as hell right now from a workout 2 days ago... Love the content here and especially a plan around after the winter strength training. Big fan of muscle building for body recomposition (Weight Loss) especially if you're on the right eating plan.

Listening to this while going through a strength routine and trying to figure out how to mix strength training and cycling. 😂 Really interesting one Anthony, really enjoyed this and found it very informative.

Is there a clear definition of what strength training is? Is it any resistance put into a muscle, stretching included? Is it something with a high rpe only? I guess my personal struggle is where it counts as a "session" vs maintenance. If I devote 30 minutes every single evening to stretching, band work, foam roller or percussion, is that a stress? Or do I have to do two RPE lifting days in a week to get a gain? I'm one of those people that won't waste the travel time going to a gym, I need stuff available to me so I don't have a way to NOT do it. Traffic, home late from work, timing of life, or I have what I need right at home and I can guarantee myself success of doing something vs nothing. Incredible video. Thank you.

The way I see it...strength training IS weight resistance and in my personal experience, low repetition/ moderately heavy compound exercises. But if you're time constrained and want to get straight into it at home, I recommend resistance bands and isometric exercise with kettlebells for similar effect. Spanish Squats with a kettlebell are superb. Bent over rows and deadlifts too. The secret in my view is just do enough to 'stimulate' the muscle and no more, then get the hell out of there, so to speak.

Great topic, but not a great guest. He said a lot, but said nothing particularly useful or actionable.
