Great video. But I’m the only 75 year old in my city running 10 k. I practice running 10k but I’m slow but following this lesson I think I can improve. I don’t care about speed so much as finishing with a smile. Thanks for these videos. They inspire me

Running cross country in highschool I always thought I was just a "5Ker" In my 20s and 30s I really got into the 10k and haven't looked back. It is by far my favorite race. Long enough to really get into my rhythm but short enough I am done in under an hour.

Currently I'm training for a 10k, to beat my PB, to get below 50 minutes on my 50th birthday. I find the training harder than for the HM what I did earlier this year. I think 10k is the ideal distance for those middle aged runners (like me) who do it for health benefits and not for medals. For most of my HM attempt I had to control my pace not to run too fast. For 10k, keeping the under 5min/km pace for 50 mins is challenging from the beginning. My speed repeats are at a higher HR and higher perceived effort.

If you find the pace difficult at the beginning , do a gentle , gradual warmup at least 10-12 mins and finish the warmup by 2-3 60m strides. Try this on your fortnightly time trail in the 5K.

I love the 10k distance, absolutely love it. As a hybrid athlete with muscles and a lot of endurance, the 10k is my sweet spot. But I really want to finish under 50 minutes, my 5k PR is 6:58 min/mile (this past March).

This is the best overall training video I've found on YT for the 10k. I'm 47 fit for BJJ and HIIT but my running is fairly lame. My cardio is pretty good. Been worried about adding volume in a safe way. Setting a goal of a 10+ mile long run really helps. ❤

As a teen all we had were 10ks... so I’d run the local 10k course every other day and then bike 20 miles on the Opposite Day... I did great at that 10k... finished and everything! Had clam chowdah at the finish line... man I miss leightons clam bakes!

Since my employment involves a lot of daily walking I rarely can run anything like 30 miles a week as I am too fatigued already so I generally don't run more than 15 miles a week mixed with regular cycling . Did a 10k race last weekend in 44.45 and I am 60

Agreed. It is so hard to get into a flow state with the 5k it’s just pure pain 😂, during the 10k i could go 20% below race pace during the first 4km then hit the zone after it and start to get faster

I train for a 10k like I do a half marathon - I run most of my fastest 10kms during a half marathon race. Hill sprints and hills in general are a must.

I really enjoy your channel thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! I started running again this summer after a particularly frightening bike crash and I got totally hooked on running. I have a 15k in 2 weeks; it's my first 15k in almost 30 years! My biggest issue by far is recovery - as a 49 year old I have been humbled and shocked at how long it has taken my legs to acclimate to running.

Good video! Now. I am late to signing up for a 10k trail run . I have about a month before the run. My goal is to finish haha and maybe in less than an 1:10:00-1:15:00. My average pace on my last run was about 13 min/mi. Not sure what exercises to do from scratch so close to race but it sounds like I can take some pointers from this video without over complicating it

Youth is a wonderful thing to have while you have it. When I was 18 I could run 5k consistently around 17 minutes. No special training other than just running it. I’m 54 now and that speed just seems impossible... but there you have it.

My Canadian brain (Metric, but loosely so) living in Australia (Metric) is absolutely struggling with tue flip-flop vetween metric and imperial. I watched this video specifically because of the metric in the title. I have a window open trying to do the conversions. Just pick a unit of measurement people! The flip-flop is painful. 200 metres and 1 mile dont live in the same 10km video. Please.

10k is actually my favourite distance, the one I happily run twice a week (easy and tempo/race) as part of my usual baseline (45-50k / week, on its way up). Clear difference of pace between a half-marathon (PB: 1h38) and a 10k (PB: 43.00), but far less between a 5k (PB: 21min) and 10k. I guess I need to go back to the drawing board in terms of workout. Any suggestion?

How old are you? How long have tou been running for? What is your weigh? It is not so hard to reach 40 min in 10 k. Actually, 400m repetitions once a week will make you have success.

I think glauber makes a reasonable comment. From what you have said, we see evidence for a strong aerobic base but not much evidence (maybe you just didn't spell it out) of speed work. Intervals (400m yes, ok, but also 6x1k 3x2k 3x3k and maybe use hills - nothing too steep - to get stronger and improve form). Best wishes

I love the 10K and am struggling in races, despite training regularly. My Vdot predicts I should run sub 38', but going sub 39' is already tough. I can sustain sub 38' pace during a race for about 25 to 30 minutes, then break down. Is there an obvious thing I need to work on?

Lactic tolerance/strength endurance. Maintaining form is vital for longer distances. Some (6-8) 1k reps at race pace with 200m (10x) reps at 1500m-3k pace to finish will likely help. Either that or your long easy runs aren't enough 🤷♂️

Not sure if you still check these comments but watned to say I enjoyed the video and had a question from what you've seen and experienced. Partook in the Peachtree Road Race last year for my first and so far only 10k with 6 runs that entire year, none above 4.4 miles. I came out witha 43 something and was just wondering (since I've started training this week) if you think I can get under 41 or 40 if I consistently train for the next 6 weeks leading up to it? And I loved that 2x3200, 1x1600, and 4x200 workout idea, any idea how many times and when I should fit that and hill workouts in the next 6 weeks? Thanks!

Very interesting, I am 56 and running 1:31 for the half, but I struggle to get under 42 for the 10k (which theoretically should be easy). I put a lot of emphasize on tempo runs, but it seems that I am missing the "speed ingredients. Any advice? I wonder if strides could make sense in order to program my older legs towards speed.

That 42 might be easy for a 42 years but not for a 56. As we get older we get slower on shorter distances more than on long ones.

Appreciate your common sense approach to structuring a program. I have a goal 10 K coming up in about six weeks. I would like to hear about one specific race pace workout and long run structure. My long run is 10 to 12 miles. I’m pretty confident with the base mileage I’ve gotten over the past three months consistently hitting mid30s per week.

Hey Michael! I don't want to recommend a workout that's too challenging - there should always be a progression from what you're doing now to what you're doing 4-6 weeks from now. I'd start moving from tempo workouts to 10k/5k paced workouts, ideally with 3-6 total miles of hard running if you can do that.

I wanted to throw this out there for anyone who'd be interested. Cross training is a huge part of training that can really benefit your strength and performance and put practically no strain on your joints and body. I would recommend the elliptical or aqua jogging in the pool. The great thing about them is they are zero impact on your legs. I don't know what your training plan looks like, but 1 work out (fartlek, tempo, progressive run, intervals, etc.), 2 easy runs, a long run, and two days off are going to help big time. I would try to throw the elliptical in there once or twice a week. The more time you spend on it, the better shape and strength you will gain. I would start low with 10-15 min, then eventually get where your doing 30min-hour no problem. It will really help build endurance and make your running feel so smooth. Just throwing that out there. Stretches and hip flexor exercises are key as well to prevent injury. Leg raises with toes down, lunges, etc.

You don't run every day. I average over 50km by running 5 times a week. You can achieve it by 4 days too. The point is: you don't run hard every day! 80% of your runs are easy jogs at low HR.

By not actually putting in the work. 5K is tough, but short enough that you can do it quite often. So one of those races/trials, you can actually hit pretty good times out of sheer luck.
