Theoretically it even should stay right below the water surface because of the air wubble bubble trapped in the wubble bubble.

That would be the weak point. The part sitting on top of the water. The air pocket as the ball got heavier would start to tighten and that's your failure point after about 6 inches under the water. A balloon is a simple way to see this.
