Horseback riding can be a lot of fun but it definitely isn’t easy! Charlotte Dujardin has a training regimen that makes us feel exhausted just thinking about it. Some equestrians with disabilities can do amazing things, unless certain regulations keep them from competing. Chloe Espisito competed in an Olympic Pentathlon and didn’t even get to choose her own mount! Learning to ride is an obvious essential, but as Hawley Bennett-Awad found out, learning to fall is also important! This is an expensive sport, and competitors like Edwina Tops-Alexander can ride horses that cost millions of dollars. Fallon Taylor knows that going fast is the secret to barrel racing, but there are some other restrictions too! And when these creatures head to the Deodoro Equestrian Centre during the Olympic games there is a whole new set of restrictions everyone has to abide by. Nicole Walker was once and Olympic hopeful but after breaking a rule her whole team might be sitting out! Marilyn Little broke a restriction that cost her multiple sponsors but some fans wonder if this ruling was fair.
What do you think about the rules these athletes have to follow? Do you think they’re keeping both humans and animals safe or do some of them go too far? Let us know what you think about these regulations in the comment section below and then click on the subscribe button and turn on your notifications to get the latest updates and info from us here at The Talko.

These literally aren't rules, they're just part of a lifestyle. There's no rule dictating Charlotte has to ride that much, she chooses to train that hard. there's no rule saying horses must be worth $$$$$$ in order to compete, top horses are just expensive, etc. These are aspects of the sport that effect everyone, not just women

I have a 10k 5yo OTTB that can jump preliminary level and that placed 1st out of 60 people at a dressage show, and won grand champion at an Eventing show with around 50 people when he was only 4. This just goes to show you don’t need the most expensive horse to do great things.

“ Ideally a rider should stretch out their arms and try to absorb as much of the impact in the area between their elbow and the shoulder.“ NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! You’re supposed to bring your arms into your chest, and relax so you fall like a rag doll, not holding tension anywhere. That’s what my doctor told me after breaking my wrist from sticking my arm out. This whole video was really silly for anyone who rides

@czw2022
@czw2022 4 жыл бұрын
Right?! It's literally physics, force = pressure/area. The more area you expose to the fall, the less force you exert on your body. So sticking out an arm causes the entire force of the impact to go into that one area, making you more likely to break it. Whereas if you fall on your back, while still uncomfortable, it will exert the pressure of the fall over more area and will create less force on your body and thus will be less likely to seriously injure yourself. It's the same reason people can lay on a bed of sharp nails and not be poked by them. Moral of the story, aim to fall in a position that makes allows the most surface area of your body to hit the ground, while not compromising your neck or head, and ideally allows you to keep rolling after you hit the ground.

@rosemarydudley9954

Have you ever noticed that when you fall, from a horse, down a step, over a chair etc., a natural reaction is to clench your hands and hold onto anything you're carrying.. Don't ask me why but it really happens. If you are falling from a horse, you just don't have a second to think about letting go of the reins.

Hey there, equestrian here to debunk all of these. 1 (Charlotte Dujardin): That's just his the sport works. For most of us it's very enjoyable so I can understand why she goes to the barn every day. It is absolutely about repetition, because nobody can perfect the sport. 2 (Sonja Johnson and the blind girl): It's actually very understandable. In eventing (most jumps can't be knocked down), it's very common for there to be some serious injuries, just like there are in other disciplines. It is a bit harsh, seeing as she found a way to ride despite the setback, but the show circuit didn't want to be held accountable. Same goes for the blind rider. 3 (Random Pairing): That's completely fine. It's just the one event, and I'm sure the riders don't bring their own horses (why spend the money when you won't be riding the horse?). Plus, a good rider should be able to ride any horse. 4 (Falling off): This happens very frequently. Also, if you fall there isn't much time to think about "using the sides of your hands" or " rounding your back", it all happens so fast. Falling off comes with the sport. Some people even say you need to fall off seven times to be a good rider. 5 (Expenses): It comes with the sport. Horses don't usually range somewhere around the millions if you aren't planning on going pro, but it's still quite expensive. It's a live animal you can ride, that (in some cases) can earn you some money in return. You bond with them. They become your partner. Trailering them to shows, vet bills, and changing horse shoes all adds up, and some people become student workers. I know a few people that are homeschooled so they can focus more on being a student worker. 6 (Barrel Racing): I've never done this or anything like it, so I don't really have an opinion on this one. 7 ("Stable Rules"): Riders *most likely* clean their equipment for their rounds, if you're tied with someone and they have dirty boots, chances are you're going to be the one ending up with a higher score. For the horses, of course they take major precautions. As said before, these horses cost more than 1mil, and vet bills can add up. With vaccines, they want to make sure your horse doesn't get any other sick as well. If you've got a class tomorrow and you find out your horse isn't fit to show because it got sick, you would probably want all these rules as well. 7 (Coco tea): There are banned substances to make sure horses aren't drugged for a better performance. It used to happen a lot not all that long ago, and if you got second place because someone's horse was given some "special treats" for a better round, it would be pretty unfair. 8 (Going Off Course): There is a certain order you have to do the jumps so they can judge everyone equally and make sure nobody has it easier than anyone else. She was disqualified, but her score probably added up from a previous round. 9 (Blood rule): One instance of this rule taking effect is when an eventer (don't remember the name) had blood coming out of her horses mouth. When she finished her round she had her stable hands rushing over with dark towels (so the blood isn't as obvious) and she said her horse banged his head. She's used this excuse countless times, and I have never seen a horse do that once in my riding experience. They should change parts of the rule, but it does need to be in place. 10 (Hurt horse rule): It's meant to keep people from hurting their horse for a better performance, but this instance was not so. It was unfortunate, but rules are rules. 11 (Knocked down pole): Knocking down an obstacle has always resulted in a penalty. If your horse spooks during a round, you need to be able to make your horse concentrate in you, you must continue your round. She pretty much *had* to blame herself, any trainer out there would tell you that "it's never the horses fault", which is always true. 12 (Guys and Girls): There is no way a male would have an advantage over a female in this sport. Riding is riding. 13 (bond): This is in no way a rule. When your horse is there with you for the highs and the lows, and blue ribbons and the Browns, you develop a bond. You can compete in a horse you don't feel all that connected to, but it feels like more of an accomplishment (and it's easier) winning. 14 (Mules): I'm not informed enough on this topic to make a good opinion on it, but I think it would be cool to have mules at competitions. None of these were really rules, most of them are not restricted to females or professionals.

exactly! and for the hurt horse one, it was proven that when boots are too tight, the horse flings its legs (especially hind ones) back and up, to avoid any more pain. It ruins the tendons and ligaments of the horse and is rightfully banned.

the Coco tea was actually drank by the rider not the horse, and she tested positive for cocaine, cocaine is obviously found in coco tea because coco tea leaves come from the same plant that cocaine is made from. the blood rule, I believe the rider you're talking about is Marlin Little, and it wasn't her horses nose that was bleeding it was the horses mouth, after she had just ran cross country, the horse was being ridden in a double twisted wire gag, and Marilyn stated that her horse bit its tongue. it was a very harsh bit and even though horses can bite their tongues that probably wasn the case in this incident.

I always feel so bad when a non equestrian account tries to make an equestrian video, having no experience. I'm glad you tried but the sport is 1. not only making these 'rules' for females, it's a mixed sport because generally, there's none of that 'men are stronger' shit. It's purely about the way you ride and your horse's ability and some men ride better than women, and some women ride better than men. 2. these aren't rules, this is the lifestyle because you rely on your horse in the way it relies on you, they're all trained a specific way, like my horses stop as soon as I take my leg off because if I quit riding, I want them to quit moving, if you are falling, let go of the reins and protect yourself as much as you can coming off at over 40kmh, and if you're caught trying to bute your horse (so your horse can still compete even though it's in pain) or take drugs then you definitely should get disqualified, otherwise, appeal it. 3. none of us are complaining about these 'rules', some are a little outdated but there's always an appeal if you think you were wronged.

You can tell that whoever scripted this, isn't an equestrian, or if they are, not at the level they are describing. Honestly, the title is misleading. I thought they were going to mention something like pain killers or birth control and other female issues that might be considered a problem at the professional level. I didn't think there were issues but with the title it was the only thing I could come up with.

Training 7 days isn’t a strict rule, it is a choice, a wise one at that. Those 7 days, the horse isn’t working extremely hard, it’ll have a couple of days where it is just hacked out and stretched. And I completely disagree with the blood rule being disregarded, it should definitely stay there. There’s so many things that you have misinterpreted here, and as a competitive show jumper it’s disappointing to see.

When Charlotte DJ says she rides 7 days a week, 9 hrs a day, she’s riding other horses in the barn, she’s earning a living training other riders and horses, most importantly at her level she must be fit and have fit horses. Following her and Alegro was watching of course an amateur watching a pro-athlete; exciting to watch but not able to duplicate the consistency in my own rides-2 hrs a day, 4 days a week. Sigh.

As a dressage and jumping equestrian I’d consider the English equestrian types more difficult. If you do barrel racing you don’t really have to pay attention to the impulses you give with the reins. The horse just canters and you have to balance it and direct with your legs.
@aberdeen98
@aberdeen98 4 жыл бұрын
@@lindaruschenschmidt7941 OK NO in barrel racing your horse is going way faster than ANY English discipline and you have to use all of your strength to get them around the barrel. You not only use the reins but you use your leg and your voice. Sometimes it gets EXTREMELY hard to get your horse under control. It's way harder than English

Random pairing is also used in the Canadian University leagues! It is a very interesting way to compete, and shows the riders abilities. It “evens” the playing field, and allows the judge to evaluate the riders capability to ride a new horse. We are not even given the 20 minutes, you get on, and once in the ring pick your reins up, do your o/f or flat and are judged on it!

I don't do competing but even I know some of these 'rules' are just requirements in the whole sport, for example having a bond, I have ridden many different horses and got to know one very well thanks to a summer camp and believe me compared to the other horses he's a kind and gentle beast, when a horse started getting spooky on me I started to panic but then rode my boy the next week and he started spooking and I just pulled him back into the corner, I trust him and love him

LOVED the mule, brilliant . Fancy seeing him come in the ring after you million dollar warmblood and the mule score nearly the same. Wished we saw more of the mule.

And studs. I have a Percheron stud that acts like a gelding half the time and have met other studs that are the same.

Watched the video because I am interested in getting into horseback riding and figured it’d be reliable, but this felt a little... off. So I went and read the comments and I’m pretty glad I did. It’s good to get an opinion from those who actually ride. :)

Ok, I’m a competitive equestrian and the majority of this video is correct except the thing about learning to fall on your elbow area- only do that if you want broken arms lol. Also I don’t understand why this video is titled something like things female riders have to follow. Equestrian is a sport with both men and women being judged equally together unlike all other Olympic sports. That being said, none of these rules are exclusive to females, males have to follow them just the same. I don’t know why they’re singling out females here, we all follow the same rules

At one point, I got the opportunity to shadow an IEA rider (While I was thinking about joining a team) and we were talking about the pair-up thing, because honestly, it kinda makes sense. They're testing to see a rider's capability of adapting to a completely different horse. And these rules don't apply specifically to female athletes. As stated in the video, all genders can compete.
