I played this at game day today and had a blast with it. I wound up mainboarding the Niblis of Frosts because it was so awesome to keep tapping their guys and i needed someone to block so i could attack with my Sphinx. I miss Languish. The problem i kept having was I just couldn't keep up with my opponents' creatures. I lost to two RW Vehicles decks. The few games I did win i managed to just get the right removal at the right time and my opponents weren't getting what they needed Best game was a win against BG delirium. I ultimated Ob Nix and managed to survive long enough-even through an Emrakul. Though he beat me the next two games. Would love to know how to make a more competitive version of this deck. Thanks for making great decks that are fun to play.

Hey Dev another great functioning budget deck! I've found flaying tendrils super effective against the amalgam decks made it to my esper side board just for that deck, instant speed removal is great but not when they just come back at the end step

Control decks typically only play a couple of main board win conditions. 2 sphinx is not unusual. A couple of seasons ago, control decks were playing ONE pearl lake ancient as the only win condition. Welcome to control. Although conversely, you could always confiscation coup a big guy FTW or even awaken ruinous path

Also don't underestimate Ob Nixilis as a win condition. I've won control vs control games by protecting him and getting his ult - inevitability.

What about Dynavolt tower? you are playing basically all istant and sorceries, you are even accumulatin energy with Live Fast and Glimmer of Genius, Dynavolt can zap their creatures helping a lot to clear the board and can be a win condition as much as a Themo-Alchemist

Dynavolt Tower is fun, but if you get Emrakul'd it means they almost always get to firebolt you to the face on your stolen turn. Just a note.

+Chrissi Mosley Try Accursed Witch if you're feeling frisky. It seems to me that a 4/2 is enough pressure to warrant a removal spell or combat trade, and then it is 1 life drain per turn and makes your burn cheaper. Other good cards: Furyblade Vampire, Sin Prodder, Thermo-Alchemist, Stromkirk Occultist, Key to the City, Alms of the Vein, Fiery Temper, Flame Lash, Collective Defiance, Incendiary Flow, and Collective Brutality. Burn from Within and/or Avacyn's Judgment might work well as finishers. You'll want to run 22-23 lands, and you can include a Blighted Fen and/or Blighted Gorge for some marginal utility in addition to 1-2x Geier Reach Sanitarium (3-4 colorless lands total). If you want a deck that is more spell-slinger than aggro, Bedlam Reveler will be a great addition, but I don't think it is really possible to make a creature-less burn deck in the current meta.

Thoughts on using Jace, UoS over Ob Nixilis?

Blackstar101 I would say no, ob does everything control wants to do. Kills creatures, draws cards, and if you control the board well enough, his ultimate will win the game in a few turns

Jace is good for holding onto the advantage, but he's not a win condition so much. He gets a lot better alongside Thing in the Ice, Gear Hulks, and Man lands because if he goes off he effectively protects them. With Sphinx in the list you don't really need to worry about it.

Can you do a deck teck for an updated for a Zada deck. I think it is getting overlooked. The spell bonus effects you get now are crazy good.With things like Thing in the Ice and Stormcaster mage and such.

Just a quick note about Summary Dismissal: It's great against Aetherflux Reservoir Decks! Granted if they go off you're probably still boned, but you can effectively prevent them from nuking you once.

I recommend trying to fit in 1-2x Blighted Fen as a possible "oh shit" button to press if you run into a deck with a creature you can't kill/get into a sticky situation in which you need an extra removal spell. Maybe trim an Evolving Wilds or two. The opportunity cost is so very low, and it could be a good main-deck answer for Emrakul (it can target only an opponent) or a mirror match (the only ways to effectively counter it are to bounce your own creature or use a Summary Dismissal).

Hey Dev, loving this deck tech. How would you feel adding man-lands like hissing quagmire and, hear me out, Lumbering falls. As going sultai gives us natrual state (I may have this confused, apologies, still new to magic) which gives us a one mana answer to gearhulks/vehicles. Also a hex proof land vs the mirror sounds good, or is this me being slow to the table? plus green gives us low cost anti -flier answers. Also how do you feel about spell shrivel vs void shatter? Would love to get your opinions. P.S get on twiiter ;P

if you are adding green for the manlands then you could as well throw some sylvan advocates, however I feel that the deck would need to be rearranged to a more midrangey strategy and not pure dedicated control.

My bad on the gearhulks, I was typing off memory and I may have been mixing up cards from my limited knowledge. My thought being with creature lands is that being lands it dodges a lot of things, lumbering falls comes with hex proof as I mentioned. I had also toyed with Shambling vent an alternate version, as both of them seem to be low priced currently. I am more than happy to take the advice of more experienced players ^_^

You also get card advantage from live fast...that's the important part. Shota played painful truths in Grixis control, and that usually hits us for 3, so we're safe taking 2, methinks

I'll make a few changes since it IS a budget deck and I already have tonnes of options. I'll play it Thursday and let you know exactly what the result is. I really dont want to abandon my Black Green aggro deck but I got murdered saturday with Blue control decks that were playing lots of removals and artifacts with little creatures. my B/G deck has lots of options for creature removal and lots of Deathtouch variety but I got annihilated because I had no answers for Blue decks versatility. I rather like that spell, esp. against control like decks and in decks where your creatures matter a lot, though what your opponent does to his creatures not so much. But seeing the main win-con has hexproof, and the other is a planeswalker, there is no reason to play it in this deck...

I personally would drop the 2 Die Young, 2 Flaying Tendrils, and 2 Live Fast for 4 Gonti and 2 Succumb to Temptation. I also like Harsh Scrutiny somewhere in this control shell. Gonti is AMAZING in control because not only can you potentially take one of your opponents best cards out the the top 4 but you can also mess up your opponents draw because of you getting to place the other 3 cards on the bottom. Gonti also has deathtouch which is relevant in combat. The reason I like Succumb over Live Fast is because not only do you get to hold up the mana making your opponent think you've got an instant speed kill/counter spell but it's also an instant speed draw spell that your opponent won't have you pegged as having.

bcmaledragon the live fast also feeds energy to die young and confiscation coup while being less mana restrictive on this budget mana base. not to mention you're asking him to remove his mass removal which is just begging for literally any aggro deck to brutally murder him with no response because he can only remove 1 at a time. Not saying he's bad, but I feel people praise gonti a bit too much as in those top 4 you could completely whiff and hit 3 land and a vessel of nascency. at that point gonti gave you nothing and cleaned up the next 4 draws for your opponent. it's kind of like combustible gearhulk and sin prodder where people were saying how amazing it was but either you get more cards or your opponent denies land drops or takes a random amount of damage that can completely whiff out.

Jordan Albee I played Gonti in BW Control this past fnm and every time I drew & played him he helped me win each game against my opponents because I either land screwed my opponent by seeing 3 land and a none relevant spell or I saw a few critical spells(Ishkanah, Larger than Life, Electrostatic Pummeller, Grasp of Darkness) that I did play against my opponent. Live fast isn't a card you want in control & neither is Die young(I've tested both cards in all kinds of control shells).

since you're running evolving wilds, you could also probably throw in 3 aether hub and a single mountain, how viable would it be to take out your 2 live fast, and start drawing 3 with painful truths? mostly whatever it would take to efficiently have a red available in an efficient manner without really tampering with the manabase or gameplan at all. maybe even just 1 aether hub and 1 mountain, with the evolving wilds that would basically be a playset of cards to get access to a single red mana for the converge 3.

i got a budget mono black madness deck for u. i built it for this new player and it was way better than i expected 4 sinister concoctions 2 indulgent aristocrats 4 heir of falkenrath 4 stromkirk condemned 4 scrapheap scrounger 4 grasp of darkness 4 gissa's bidding 4 twins of maurer estate 3 succumb to temptation 3 from under the floorboards 23 swamps 1 sea gate wreckage SIDE BOARD.......... 3 dead weight 2 haunted dead 1 succumb to temptation 2 harsh scrutiny 4 transgress the mind 2 lost legacy 1 mind rot I went 3-1 at 2 fnms with this, and winning with some so cheap was a blast

DinosaurFilms I am just getting back into standard because of this deck. Currently running three towers in my deck and I'll say when it works it makes you feel almost untouchable. The problem is a lot of sideboard cards designed to remove the looter scooter also remove towers. Still play testing but I find it can help. Another issue with it is towers in this matchup just feel like a win-more condition. If you are behind it rarely helps but if you are ahead you creep into enviable win territory.

Macabre Derek thanks for the feedback. In my experience (during gameday) tower felt very powerful in control mirrors and seems like a good option on the budget in those matchups since we arent playing any walkers in the side.

DinosaurFilms Cant say I am the most rigerous at playtesting, but I imagine the issue is as a control matchup it's not the best play. Even with this deck it runs 4 Cerimonious Rejection, Fragmatize is still heavily used due to Looter Scooter, and alot of the answers in a control deck almost seem set for that Dynavolt Tower.

The reason you play Ob Nix over Jace in this deck is that Ob Nix kills creatures; Jace just bounces them. You want to be removing things from the board state, because you don't have a lot of creatures to stand in front of your plainswalkers for you. Both Jace and Ob Nix's ultimates are win conditions, but if you can't keep the opposing board state clear, you are just going to keep ticking down Jace's loyalty every time they replay that creature you bounced.

It's that sphinx works with your other spells rather then dropping a 5/7. You also start winning the ctrl mirror by keeping your spells uncounterable.

then how about putting just 1 sire and 1 sphinx for the 2 creature base and keep 1 more sphinx in the board for the mirror?

Yoshi idk, I just think sire isn't that good and doesn't go with the deck. There are only so many situations where you need to stop land drops whereas a flying hexproof uncounterable 5/5 that makes your spells also uncounterable is just so much better. If you want something to deal with other matches that are lower to the ground or more wide use demon of dark schemes. Flying 5/5 that sweeps the board, gives you energy, and can reanimate creatures for 2B. It's 2 bucks, so still a budget option.

It is too slow, the fact that the zombies entered tap doesn't help to protect you against aggro, and vs control you might get away with it game 1, but post sideboard they will get likely fumigated, tendrils'd, etc, and that is if you even manage to resolve it.

I'm running a naya planeswalker control deck with the green creature that makes servos and bigger artifacts creatures as well as some agro cards like the green gearhulk and the red green 3/2 that gets trample with energy.....also I'm torn with my esper deck with the rotation of Jace so I'm not sure what to do with it...need help.

Gonti is a great card but expensive compared to the others in this particular deck. I actually play 2 Gonti in my Black Green Aggro deck and its usually a game changer. however I dont see the 'Live Fast' having any good effect when this deck has a very underpowered offensive rake. also I feel like having too much control against other control decks that play 'Thing In The Ice' (which is verrrry popular atm) gives you a durastistic disadvantage. I got popped twice by not having an answer for 'Thing In The Ice'.

I really want to run it. I feel like it's more good then it lets on. Obviously it's much better vs control because you can steal their key piece and there is always that threat of who knows what you snagged. I'll probably put a few into my B/U list but I am not sure what I'd cut for it.

As control players, we have far more valuable 3 drops to play. All of our counters and removal are three drops. I'm not pulling either of those for a tower.

I'm curious as to why people are running Void Shatter over Scatter to the Winds? Is the exile clause realy that important that you'd play a counterspell that gets hit by Ceremonious rejection, which people are mainboarding right now? Plus Scatter can make a guy for you in the endgame when you have extra mana.

Najarala I approve the use of Scatter cause I flavor hate Eldrazi spells. Thing is, GY play is still a thing in standard, so exiling helps.
