As a Cambodian, I certify that everything that Mikey Chen ate here are classic and much loved dishes enjoyed authentically by the locals every day. Thank you for your thorough coverage, Mikey. Kudo to the local guide for giving you such insightful recommendations as well. You show much respect for our way of lives, too. I salivate watching this. :) Come back again soon. Much love

Cambodian food given to foreigners is usually so “dumbed down” that it ends up as a bland generic Asian food. Cambodians, though they are very proud of their food, rarely give the real versions of their cuisine to foreigners, thinking that they won't like it. If Cambodians would let outsiders eat their food, including prohok, foreigners would have a much different perspective.

If you have more time in Cambodia, go to Koh Rong island where the sand is very white and beautiful or Siem Reap for ancient temples. Also side note: people usually eat the beef stew with noodles where the stew act like the soup or dip baguette in there.

It's been years since I've visited Cambodia. Some of the foods you tried are newer versions of classic favorites or has Chinese or Vietnamese influences. Fried bananas are traditionally heavily battered and sprinkled with black sesame seeds. Beef stew is typically served with rice noodles or baguettes and has carrots in it. And, your research is correct; Amok is steamed. The surface of a correct version looks smooth like the surface of poached eggs and paste-like once you spoon into it. And it's totally normal to see shredded kafir like leaves sticking out; they're edible decorations. The 2 versions you were served looked more like fish curry. Next time you visit Cambodia, go to any of the beach towns in Komong Som and order the stir fry crab with fresh green peppercorns. The peppercorns are locally grown in the Kompot Province. You're welcome! Thank you for sharing your Food Tour Experience!

Should give fish amok another try. It’s like you said a steam dish and it’s a very aromatic great curry that is more like a paste. It’s one of my favorite dishes made by my grandma. I would say you should try going outside of the capital the food will be a little different with a twist. Just like Thailand the different regions have differences in food to offer.

Also if you’re looking for the creamy type of Amok they usually have a coconut milk base on top. But yea Phnom Penh is not known for traditional dishes in Cambodia. You wanna go to Siem Reap for that. Battambang & Siem Reap It’s the root of Khmer traditional food.

The pigs feet cake, you do dip it with sweet fish sauce with Thai chili peppers. Wrap it with green lettuce to complete the dish. The beef stew, typically you eat it with a French baguette slap with Asian butter. You can also eat it with kathiew/pho noodles

I’m from Louisiana. The comment about throwing the napkin on the ground reminded of local culture where they always serve roasted peanuts as a botana. There is almost always a sign that says, ‘throw your shells on the ground. My wife needs the work”.

A lot of foreigners are afraid to eat street food in Cambodia because they think they’ll get food poisoning. As a Khmer and living in Cambodia, the street food are amazing and I never once got food poisoning.

Congee originally came from China but when the rest of Asia picked up their influence they developed their own version with own flavours. An example is the Cambodian congee Chinese congee and Arroz caldo (filipino congee)

That sure was a good day eating amazing food. Everything looked so tasty and I sure would love to start my morning with that rice & meat dish. Impossible to even imagine how all that would taste like. That beef stew got me drooling hard 😋 3 days surely is not enough time to explore any country but least you didn't go hungry. I visited Egypt ones over 20 years ago. Not in a hurry to go back. Looking forward for seeing that trip. Thanks and safe travels 👍
