I would like to propose the theory that Leon is a doom mapper. The weird puzzles such as walking through a door backwards feel like the sort of thing that would be at home in a doom wad. The vast amount of backtracking is also a common occurance in doom maps. Finally, the flat x-box controller feels like the doomcute style, in which objects such as computers or furniture are made by raising or lowering parts of the floor. Leon’s age also supports this theory. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

I swear I heard somewhere that Leon started his mapping journey through Duke Nukem 3D, which certainly supports the whole "Leon builds his HL2 maps around a more (for lack of a better word) antiquated style of map design, far more fitting for early, pseudo-3D FPS games" theory.

As someone who plays a lot of Doom WADs (and is working on one of my own currently) ... yeah, this makes sense. Granted, a lot of this stuff could still be considered bad map design in Doom nowadays, but I could definitely see this evolving from someone whose mapping style developed in the '90s. Combined with the cutscenes and awkward "story" + messages ... I feel like Leon has retained all the stereotypically "bad" elements of multiple eras of video game mapping/modding that everyone else largely moved on from and combined them together. Oddly fascinating.

The squeaky door sound is from the Half Life 2 beta where this strange clock emits that sound. The sound in the files of Half Life 2 is called squeal.wav there is also a secret in Half Life 2 at the Highway 17 chapter at Odessa's base (the place where you get the rocket launcher) there is a rebel on a tower if you kill him squeal.wav will play it's a really weird sound.

This is a real blast to the past. I remember following this after Leon Completed Coastline to Atmosphere and in the very beginning the combine were literally just Counter-Strike: Source SAS and GIGN skins before he swapped them back to the Combine. The team working with Leon also worked hard on implementing an armored car into the driving sequences but scrapped it because it was nearly undrivable. Also WTF I don't remember the fog in the intro looking so god damn awful. Was it broken in an update or something?
