Hi, I'm a 15 year old trying to build his sailboat. I was wondering if its easier to build a trimaran or a catamaran (for two people)?

Thank you for watching and for your interest. It will be easier to build a catamaran than a Strike 15. Can I suggest the Quattro 14 as that was specifically designed for youth sailors. See here for more www.sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs-2/46-beach-cats-and-dinghies/6-quattro-14

Why is a trimaran faster than a catamaran (of equal weight and width) when only two of the trimarans hulls are in the water at a time?

Thank you for watching. Your question has a complicated answer. Ignoring ease of sailing etc, it depends on the wind and sea state. In general catamarans are faster offwind and trimarans are more manouverable and faster to windward in light winds. Essentially its down to lower wetted surface area on a trimaran - important in light winds. And longer, finer hulls on a catamaran - important in strong winds and at high speeds.

Would you estimate that you're going at least 75% faster than a 15 foot dingy would be going in that wind?

*****Thank you for viewing the video. Of course it depends on the 15ft dinghy, many are slower, some racing boats might be faster. You should check the Strike 15 owner comments here sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs/27-trimarans-under-25/223-strike-15-trimaran scroll right down to where the owner says "Last Sunday during a three rounds regatta with 6 to 7 kts winds I was behind A class cat and Tornado with spinnaker, sometimes very close or before last A cats (despite my very bad starts !), but I consistently beat all the rest of the fleet including Darts (both 1 and 2 up). I achieved same course as A class cat upwind, slightly slower. Faster and closer than Darts upwind, faster and deeper downwind (main and jib only)." he is faster now as he has a screecher
