Strike a Pose: Stephen Farthing and the Swagger Portrait

From 29 June to 3 November 2024 paintings by artist Stephen Farthing RA are exhibited alongside the historic collections at Kenwood in London.
Since the 1970s Farthing has found inspiration in historic ‘swagger portraits’, including the series of portraits by Jacobean artist William Larkin in Kenwood’s Suffolk Collection. On the 50th anniversary of the year in which this collection was given to the public, Farthing’s contemporary responses are displayed at Kenwood in dialogue with some of the portraits that have influenced his work.

17th century portraiture is in a league of its own...and Stephen Farthing's renditions somehow see the truth in them. Perhaps how electric they would be if they were painted today. Today's aristocracy would spare NO color. Love. Keep up the beautiful art.
