It looks like one bit of the stick splintered and caught in the recess of the bullet. From there, I wonder if the tip of the splinter sitting in the cup was keeping the rest of the match from coming in contact with the front edge of the bullet, and the friction from the spinning wasn't enough to start the matchstick rotating until it gets pushed back against the bullet for long enough for it to "grab". Clearly you need to start experimenting until you find a way to recreate this effect. Maybe tiny metal pins driven through the matches to simulate that little splinter and trying to align one so that the pin gets "caught" in the hollow point.... This isn't at all an excuse for you to play with bullets in slowmo some more, nope. It's puuuure science.

Buddy of mine is a mechanical engineer who worked for Chrysler. If I recall the details correctly, he told me about a time they had a problem during testing of a seat latch which failed once during a crash test. It required high speed video to watch a sequence of events that seemed so improbable that you'd think they were impossible.

When I was in boy scouts in the 90s, for summer camp we send a couple scouts to the camp quartermaster and buy a box of strike anywhere matches for the troop and use that for starting campfires and lanterns for the week. We were taught how to start fires without matches of course, but day to day we didn't use those. I remember when it was my turn, the person I was with got to carry them back but he tripped and dropped the full, unopened box. It immediately burst into flames. Ever since then I've never questioned why people wanted them banned. The reactions to the hitchiking match here were just too wonderful. I had to look at it a while to convince myself it wasn't a clever edit gag so I can't imagine how it felt in person.

Sixty years ago, my grandfather walked me out to the machine shed on the family farm. He gave me a box of .22 shells and a single-shot rifle. He went down and put a strike anywhere match (farmer match) in a crack in the wood. He walked back about 30 feet, took one shot, and lit the match. He said to me, David, stay here and keep shooting till you can light that match, and at about 75ish, I finally lit the match and then lit more multiple times after that. It’s not new. We’ve been doing it for a long time. I enjoy your channel! Thank you for all your hard work!

I worked at The Ohio Match Company in 1971 in the Chemistry Lab, the Strike Anywhere Tip was made of Potassium Chlorate and Red Phosphorous. Which as you may know is a contact ignition composition. You could light those matches on any rough surface, even denim jeans. The striking surface on books and boxes was Red Phosphorous and Carbon Black and was printed on the paper in the press room (where I also worked for a time). The friction of the Potassium Chlorate in the match tip against the Red Phosphorous is what caused the match to light.

When I was a kid my uncle told me about a game at a fall fair probably in the 40s where you had to light a match with a 22 from 20 feet free hand. He said he could shoot the head off but it was impossible to light a match like that. So 11 or 12yr old me took that as a challenge and practiced all winter with my air rifle. By spring I could light a match from 20 feet about 1 in every 10 tries. When I showed him he gave me $20. That was big money in the 80s.

1:36 I have a very funny story for you. The reason why those matches are so hard to get is they are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS in bulk packaging. I worked at a hardware store that sold them and before my time there there was an email that was sent out warning people that they under no circumstances should so much as DROP a box of strike anywhere else they will go off. An employee missed the email, was informed by a coworker, did not believe said coworker, and proceeded to spike the individual box of matches like a football straight into the ground and it IMMEDIATELY caught fire causing him to drop the rest of the box which upon contacting the floor also caught on fire Fire extinguisher was used and nobody was injured, no product/property damage other than the matches (thankfully)

Love the message towards the end. People really are more important than accomplishments, it took me too long to learn and I'm so glad you spread the word! 1Thess5:11 was a great cap ;) As a retired gunsmith I wanna throw out a few pointers: -Laser boresighters are junk, and are only useful for getting "kinda close" without just manually boresighting the old fashioned (free) way. -Rimfire ammo is always inherently inconsistent- this means failures and inaccuracy are inevitable. -addendum; "Accuracy" in firearms means something different than the normal scientific setting. Think consistency, i.e. an accurate gun is one that makes a small group size, regardless how close to the center of the target. -Hence, hitting something that small is a challenge regardless how close to the muzzle you are. @@calebs4887 Rimfires are usually mass produced, although Match ( see what I did there) grade CCI ammo is usually much more accurate than the standard stuff. Rimfires are often inconsistent with the priming material, this too will cause inconsistent velocities. Serious presion shooters handload centerfire ammo with everything from the projectile, powder, cases precision weighed. Primers and powders are kept separate by lot and production dates. The rifling twist rate, bullet weight and wind factors in greatly also. The smallest variation in anything causes inconsistencies in your shot placement.

@@calebs4887 Rimfire ammo is inherently less consistent than centerfire for a couple reasons. Different priming compounds applied differently around a circumference that can't be controlled as closely as a centerfire cup. They're also a much smaller than typical charge (amount of powder), so any variation is magnified; and of course, engineered more for economy than precision, for a variety of reasons. Chris Baker at LuckyGunner has done some really good technical background on this, look for his videos "Is .22 LR Too Unreliable for Self-Defense?" and "How .22LR Ammo is Made" the latter of which contains some fascinating footage of rarely seen manufacturing processes!

@@Thestargazer56 Eley Match .22's are advertised to have the most consistent priming of any rimfire ammo. Mass production has them dropping a tiny dab into the case then spinning it to distribute it...more or less...around the rim. Made in the billions per year...I've pulled bullets from many brands of ammo and found spots without compound now and then...which cause a misfire if the firing pin strikes right there. Those are the ones that will fire when you chamber the round in another orientation and I do wish more companies would make rimfire guns with dual firing pins which would be more reliable. I'm not sure how Eley does their priming but it does seem to make for more consistent velocities which are critical for precision work. The high-speed video shows some of the bullets yawing quite a bit which will be hurting the attempts to light matches. This could be from the Shorts being less than happy with the 1-16 twist in the Ruger barrel...or the jump to the rifling in the longer Long Rifle chamber is less than ideal for accuracy. My 10/22 has a target barrel with much tighter chamber that starts to engrave the rifling when the bullet is fully inserted and is a real tack driver. This sometimes makes extraction of an unfired round take more force than the extractor can muster so you have to be careful to not leave a live round in there even if you've racked the bolt several times to clear it.

The thing people don’t quite understand about those lasers is, they aren’t truly lined up with the bore. As you mentioned mentioned about the barrel moving, taking the laser out will do the same thing. Even the adjustable lasers where you rotate them to “zero” the laser, it’s not taking barrel harmonics in to account, so it can get you really close, but not the degree of precision needed. All of this is assuming your rifle is consistent enough too. What I probably would’ve done is drawn some thing on a backstop to aim at and then seen where it hits and that’s gonna be your offset. Then put a target or something along those lines where you intend to put the matches verified by shooting your point of aim again, and attempting to line the matches up with the very tip of that grease ring from the round and adjust accordingly. That said, you made it work, so that’s awesome and the results were amazing!

The best part of this video is your enthusiasm for seeing the results and the overall setup. In general, the videos where you're having a good time are my favorites. Also, have you considered putting in threaded holes on the bottom side of the block holding the matches and putting bolts (probably machine threaded) under the matches? It might be a good way to adjust the heights of the matches with some amount of precision.

Hey Destin, That is a really cool video. I am a little curious as to why there is a delay before the fire starts. Also, many years ago, I used to shoot strike anywhere matches out of a BB gun without the BBs. I found out that the match would explode when it hit a solid surface. Give that a try with your new matches. Keep up the good work.

The delay is because while it looks fast, this is a relatively slow chemical reaction so people have a delay between when they strike the match and when it starts burning in earnest. Reduces the burning of striking surfaces.

The hole is well-established, and the match is under 0.22" in diameter. Unless it tumbles right out of the barrel, it should be fine.

you can make strike anywhere matches by harvesting the material from the matchbook and mixing it with the material from a few sacrificial matches. mix it into a paste and dip your matches in the substance and let it dry. I keep a bunch of these in my go pack for camping.

@@sooyster4033 you can scrape the stuff from the striker off the box with a razor blade. Just be careful mixing the match head and striker powder. It makes something called Armstrong's mixture and it's shock sensitive and explosive.
