I have figured out that with my grandkids, that if I simply give them a 'Toy' (one of the projects Mr. Yeany posts) they will play with it for hours. Only after they have had their fun they are more receptive to learning how it works. Hope you continue to post these for many more years. Thanks for sharing.

These demonstrations are just wonderful. I really enjoy the simplicity of your ideas. At one moment you said that this is a demonstration of Bernoulli's principle in action. I am not sure. When the pipe gets narrower then yes, we can call Bernoulli. But the string is sucked into the pipe after the constriction, where the pipe is broad. I am not an expert in fluid dynamics but perhaps we have a low-pressure vortex after the constriction. Edit: Probably this is what happens. A fast jet of air above the constriction entrains air molecules present just after the constriction and below the jet line. It causes lower pressure. This is related to the Coanda effect.

Yes, after running the strings for a short time, the would stick to the walls or to the hanging sheet, I'd have to keep it far enough away or it affected the flight

Really interesting at 5:18 - I see one node at the house pillar, where the curvature changes. I'm pondering why the lower half of the shape isn't a catenary, but momentum factors heavily into this. Now I'm going to have to build these into the ducts in my home, so when heater turns on it's an art exhibit.

@simonpajger1331 Жыл бұрын
Hi, I have a question about the forces acting on a string. You draw a lift pushing string upwards, but I really dont see where this force could come from. Isnt it just drag, pushing string forwards, that is causing this?
@YeanyScience Жыл бұрын
If you watched my original string shooter from 2014, my theory is that it was inertia carrying it forward, I was soon proven wrong, the lifting force is coming from the atmosphere's pressure being greater than the pressure of the moving air stream. You may want to watch science lab's demonstration with shooting strings listed in my comments
@getaclassphys Жыл бұрын
@@YeanyScience I think your theory isnt fully correct. Of course, you are right when you write about inertia for the initial flight of the string. But what force acts on the whole loop? There are gravity which resultant is applied to the center of mass of the loop, and the aerodynamic force which acts along the string (and to what point acts the resultant of this force?). And those two forces must be equal in magnitude and must create equal torques, so they act along one vertical line. This condition defines the shape of the loop.

@@YeanyScience thought it might be worth the ask? Or just throw the idea out there like a boomerang and see what would return? I’ve spent the last few days thinking out how it could be done with a few guy on Airborne Wind Energy Systems (Awes) forum. Considering the potential applications? Considering scaling potential? I’d argue you weren’t all that far off, coming up with something? Paint rollers was a genius move. So not too far from attaching a motor/ generator. It just a question of how well it work in the wind? Laddermill has been mentioned in our discussion on the forum as similar variant. I’ve proposed three basic variants ground based, hybrid and fully airborne. With the airborne version using the loop as a streamer? Definitely near your pay grade? Would be fun to see some numbers?
