In this episode I show you how to work with “pancake” or stringout timelines in the Edit page, a technique favoured by many editors.
This technique is particularly useful if you are working with large numbers of clips in your project as you don’t have to open each one individually to view it, and is similar to working with the Source Tape in the Cut page.
I look at two main workflows. The first uses stacked timelines to copy and paste clips from your stringout into your main edit. The second shows you how you can leverage all the editing functions in Resolve by loading the stringout timeline into the Source Viewer.

Great to hear! Hopefully the pancake joke doesn't become too wearing on repeated viewings 😉

I use the Swap Source/Timeline quite a lot when editing. One thing that's really nice about having a timeline in the source viewer is that some of your normal navigation buttons work: Up/Down arrow selects the Prev/Next edit point. And 'X' marks In/Out ranges for the clip that's (nested) within the timeline in the source viewer. This can make it quite easy to flick through a couple of clips until you find the one you need, and then hit X, followed by F9 through F12 for your edit operation. It's especially powerful if you spend a bit of time rearranging a timeline you want to cut from such that clips which goes together have locality. For the stuff which require more precision, you swap. I've bound mine to Shift-Tab so it's easier to hit than Ctrl-PgUp on my keyboard. But this might vary for you, keyboard type and layout depending.

Very nice video. I first saw this explained on the Creative Video Clips channel. It's a great technique that I use all the time now. It's one of those things that sounds quite complicated when it's explained but becomes easier once you start using it.

Brilliant information Mr. Roberts! I'm so used to the workflow in Avid Media Composer where I switch between source and master timeline as it seems to be the fastest ways to edit until you keep your stringouts to reasonable duration. The last method described in the video of using decomposed compound clips and swaping source and timeline viewer seems to mimic this behaviour. Stacking the timelines feels wasteful use of screen real estate.

Thank you! You got it! Yes, I've often worked with Avid editors who want to replicate the workflow you describe, so that's really what the final steps in this video are trying to do! I usually prefer it myself to stacking timelines, also for the same reason you give - multiple timeline panels are more difficult to manage, especially on smaller displays! Thanks for commenting. 🙏🏻

I use pancakes timelines for each camera I used then copy and paste in the main timeline so I start with a big pancake timeline and using action cams and drone I have no timecode available so this is my starting point. I always lose lots of time to insert the clips in the chronological order, I will have to set those keyboard shortcut, it would speed up the process. Thank you another useful tutorial!

Can the timeline be moved to the second monitor? I really miss this feature...
@Chris.Roberts
@Chris.Roberts 4 ай бұрын
You can have the timeline on a separate monitor... but you don't "move" it there... Instead choose Workspace > Dual Screen > On... This will spilt your Resolve interface across your two monitors. Then you can choose Workspace > Dual Screen > Full Screen Timeline. This will place the Timeline, Meters and Inspector on your primary display. You can change which monitor is your primary display by choosing Workspace > Primary Display > [choose your monitor]. Hope this helps!!!

Not sure I got everything out of this video. At least a little bit here and there. Pretty low down the experience curve, I am. It would help me if you mentioned why you did something neat. Nothing wrong with neat, I’m just very linear. And, it’s hard to see what you really did, often. For example, when you copy/paste into a timeline, is it a “ripple edit”? If not, what really happens?
@Chris.Roberts

Thanks for commenting. Hopefully you got something from watching; even just a little tidbit or something... Generally, when you paste a clip in the timeline it will be pasted as an overwrite edit, so it will overwrite any clips in the way in the timeline, just as if you've dragged the clip into the timeline... You can choose *Edit > Paste Insert* to insert the clip rather than overwrite, but this is a separate function. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

SO close to becoming as good as AVID with the source timeline.... the swapping gets very confusing tho, If only it stayed in the source viewer
